peeing in her sleep?

Hi everyone! Mopsey is having some trouble holding it in while herding those Serta mattress sheep. :? She has peed on herself while asleep twice in the past couple of weeks. She wakes up looking very imbarassed and confused. Poor baby! Its usually after a lot of running around when she is out like a light! She is a little over 4 months now. Is this a normal baby behavior? I mean, is she having one of those "I am going to the bathroom" dreams we've all had? Hmmm Called the vet and made an apptmt for saturday just in case.

hmmm. I haven't experienced that with mine, it is probably just her age, but it is good that you are getting her to the vet anyway. Better safe than sorry is my motto with kids and pets. I hope she is ok, give her a belly rub for me. Stormi and co.
Thanks Stormi! I will! She gets many of them. LOL She is such a good girl and I am just concerned. I don't think that its normal for anyone to wet themselves. I am thinking to just get a pee sample and bring it to the vet's office. He is on vacation till saturday, and I will feel anxious for three days until the appointment.
it may be an indication of a uti or another health problem so its good that you are taking her to the vet.

but some healthy dogs do this too- i would try limiting her water intake at night and that should do the trick!
We had a similar experience with our Maddie. I don't mean to be gross so please excuse me. When we first adopted her back in May(she's 2 years old), I noticed that while she was snoozing and would get up, there would be a small wet spot. My hubby thought I was crazy and it was just because she was licking an area or just because she was drooling. I took her to the vet and it ends up she has a loose sphincter so there was a little bit of urine seeping out at times. It could be the reason why she was given up in the first place ;( She's now on meds (proin) and she is perfectly fine and happy ;) I am sure your Mospey will be just fine!
Please do tell us what happens.
Hmmm. Mopsey seems to let it all lose. She wakes up with a small puddle because her backside has soaked up most of the pee. So we bath her bottom. She only did it two times, and every time it seems that it was after pretty intense experience. For example, today we took her to the beach for the first time (she LOVED IT). She came home, ploped down, exhausted, and was asleep within a few minutes. Then, a half hour after, she woke up in a puddle. My poor baby. She kinda tried to clean herself off, and when I came to say hi to her, she then licked my face (Yeeeaaak!), a pee kiss. Anyway, she looked so sorry and confused. So, we just took her to take a little bottom bath. Ofcourse, I am starting to freak a little. She seems very energetic and healthy otherwise. Doesn't eat too much, but I think its because we switched her food this week to Wellness and it takes her a while to get used to it. But she did do the peeing thing once before the food switch, so I don't think that it has anything to do with it.
Could be a change in food. Always switch slowly, taking 5 days to make the change over. Diarrhea is common, but I guess pee might be another symptom. She is still a baby so may be having trouble as new nerves and muscles extend themselves. At four months she shouldn't be coming into season.......but.

Good idea getting her to the vet just in case it's a uti. Would help if you could collect a urine sample from first pee of day.....hopefully that's not the soaked mat....to take with you for the exam. Save a few days in diagnosis. I try to keep several of the sterile jars the vets give out so I arrive prepared.
I would talk to your vet about this. It is probably nothing - but better safe than sorry!

Kristen
She just did it again! Its not a full puddle, but she tinkled on herself. Oh man!!!!!!!!! I am so worried now! My vet won't be back till saturday! Is it possible that she has a cold down there? She sleeps on the tile floor by the door, maybe the draft and the cold did it? It was more like leaking this time! What do I do!? 8O
Try not to worry! It's probably nothing serious! She may just have an infection. The Vet should try and get a sterile urine sample and see what's going on.

Is anyone available at your vets that you could bring a urine sample too and have it tested before your vet returns on Saturday??? If not - be sure to schedule her on Saturday and in the mean time - take her out more often - and make sure she's getting plenty of fluids.

Kristen
Oh gosh, Kristen. Thanks! She has free access to outside and she doesnt pee in the house anymore. She only pees on herself while asleep. I already made an appointment. How on earth do I get a pee sample? Do I just put a little container under her, or a paper towel? I don't think she is gonna go with me sqatting behind her as she does her thing. :?
It's not easy - but I've put a pan or container under them as they squat. Your vet can also get one through a procedure done at the office - which is usually recommended in order to ensure it is sterile.

You should get one of those disposable metal pans - or something like that and as she starts to go slip it under her butt - you don't need a lot - and then transport it into a closed container of some kind.

Let us know how you make out!

Well, the results are in and the doc seems to think its a UTI. He said its a mild case. He mentioned her having crystals??? in her urine. Don't know what it means. He said that he is 90% sure that it is. He is giving us meds for her to take. They sould work within 3-4 days. The doc mentioned that it was unusual for a pup this young to get it. He said if this doesn't go away within a few days we will have to run some more tests. It could be a malformed uterus (sp?), or poor muscle control. Of course i freaked, and he said not to worry until we see that the pills are not working. *sigh* I will keep you updated. What on earth would cause a UTI. I know what causes it in humans, is it the same thing in dogs? I am praying that its just a UTI. She has peed on that huge bed I bought her, so I washed it and it is drying outside in the nice hot humid NYC air. Whatever the cause, I am NOT exchanging her!! I wouldn't give up a kid if something was wrong, neither will I do it to her. My poor baby girl...
Hang in there ;) Your girl Mopsey will be just fine. You are doing everything you can to get your girl better. If it's a "muscle control" thing, it's completely controllable so don't be alarmed. I know it sounds scary and can be alarming. Maddie is on meds for this and we haven't had any issues whatsoever. She's a happy, healthy, wonderful girl, leading a normal life. And with a UTI, they also give antibiotics that do wonders.
Thanks for the words of comfort...I am observing her and she seems to be fine. But they are so good at hiding illnesses. Hubby is going to pick up the meds tomorrow. I am happy to hear that your girl is doing well! It does ease my mind a bit. I have never thought that I would be wishing for her to have a sickness, but I sure do hope its just a UTI and that the pills will work.
It is most likely a UTI Marley and the meds will work. A bacteria is what causes a UTI - in humans and dogs alike. Even if it isn't just a UTI - you can deal with whatever comes along - and we'll all be here to support you!

A uterus problem can be addressed by spaying. A muscle control issue can also be addressed. If she's prone to crystals in the urine - sometimes a special diet is needed. Try not to worry about any of those issues until that time comes - if it comes at all.

Be sure that she finishes all the medication - even if she starts to improve!

Good Luck!
kristen
If she has crystals in her urine, it isn't a problem as long as it is treated. One of our cats had crystals which caused a blocked urinary tract (not fun and EXPENSIVE). The conventional doctor wanted to put him on a special diet (the cat refused to eat the food). The holistic doctor gave him some medication (DL-Methionine) to make his urine more acidic which would inhibit the growth of crystals. We haven't had any problems since he started the medication.

Good luck
Jennifer
Unfortunately this type of problem can also be caused by improper tail docking. How close was her tail done? Some actually dig in and remove the last vertebra, and damage nerve endings in the process. This is something that usually shows up right away however, not months down the road.
Thank you all for your support! Willowspite its nice to see that you are back!!!! How was the move? Her tail is not docked all the way, she has a tiny little stump. So cute! The doctor said not to worry. So I am TRYING not to. Its hard, though, she is my baby. We changed foods to Wellness, so I hope that that will help with the crystals. I will difinatly finish the medicine, Kristen. Thanks. Also, she threw up last night, twice. Once all her food came up, and then again just liquid with little rocks in it. Geeeze. I think she is eating things she shouldn't. WE are also giving her baby aspirin for the past couple of days because she is teething, and that came up undigested too. So I think I will stop the aspirin, as it looks like she has a sensitive tummy.
ok, the doc has prescribed ditrim. Is this an intibiotic? If it is, is she at risk of getting a yeast infection? Should I give her some yogurt? I have been feeding her two table spoons of vanilla yogurt cause i read it was good for her. What are your thoughts?
Thanks Marley! :) I posted a bit of an update in the moving thread....
I'm not familiar with ditrim, but if it is an antibiotic then yes yogurt is good to keep her natural intestinal flora balanced. If she is throwing up more with the med though you may want to get her back to the vet in case it is an allergic reaction. Good luck! I hope she is better soon!
Here is a link to the technical specs on Ditrim.

Reads like stereo instructions, might want to get a cup of coffee.
He he, thanks for the link. I have to say that the meds are working and she hasn't peed in about 3 days. She also seems to be eating better, and more energetic, if that is possible. LOL I have been feeding her some yogurt to prevent a yeast infec. She loves it! Thanks to all for all the help and advice!!!!
Marley,

This is great news! I am glad to hear that she is getting better! This should also help with housetraining. I was trying Marie on yogurt the other day, it is supposed to be good for them after they have kittens. She turned her nose up at it and said, "tuna please". LOL
I would try Jack and Annabelle with yogurt, but don't want to upset their tummies. That is wonderful that Mopsey is liking it. Stormi and co.
Stormi, I tried different flavors, and then finally, all in the house liked vanilla flavored yogurt. LOL How is Marie doing??? Her kittens are due soon, right? Oh, tuna! Forget it! They all go nuts for it! These guys have learned what a microwave, toaster, and can opener sound like! They hear the beeps and clicks from outside and run in the house with their tongues hanging out! I swear my cat Huck and Mopsey are blood related! LOL They will be the same colors (grey and white) and act the same too!!! LOL
My dog Morgan had that problem and it was because she was spayed. Two things have worked. 1) DES twice per week (from the vet) or Sudafed as needed. My dog feels bad when she pees in her sleep and this medicine has been great for her.

hi all, its been a few years now since i've posted! got an email about someone replying to this topic which reminded me what a great time i had with all the folks and what great advice everyone offered. so i am back for a while anyway, i think (and pray) that we are moving this week or the next, so i might be away again for a while. Marley, Mopsey, Roofus and Katie
I just got that same problem solved back in May. Rheba would sleep and some urine would leak out. She didn't even realize that she did it. Typically, animals will not sleep in their waste. She would wake up in the morning and go about her business and I would notice the wet spot on the bed.
I took her to the vet and he explained that when dogs get fixed, it can weaken their sphincter muscles therefore allowing them to leak some uring. The vet also gave me a bottle of meds. We haven't had any major problems since. She has leaked a little...actually more like a tiny dribble but nothing major. I put a touch of peanut butter on the pill and she thinks it is a treat. I give the meds 2x a week.
The vet also explained that if it only happens during sleep, then it is probably weak muscles. If it happens while she is awake, then it may be a UTI.
Hi i have a 10 month old cat have made several vet visits and she is taking previn or something lke that. Still isnt working any other ideas i can not afford 1500 for MRIs aand what ever other tests they want to do. Any one have same problem even after meds??
