throwing up

Hi all!

Sofi has been throwing up ocassionaly and the vet seems to find nothing wrong with her. The food is not digested at all or very little and we've checked for parasites with no avail.

My wife says it could be because she's eating too much or too fast. Have you had any experiences like that? The episodes are not frequent, but i'd like to see them go away.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Saul

Hmmm. Is this happening after you come back from a car ride? I know that Mopsey throws up sometimes, I think she gets car sick, but not as much in the car. After she gets out, a few minutes later, she barfs. I am sure you'll get more suggestions.
in general dogs can hurl a little if they eat too fast.

we had that a lot in the kennels.

if there's nothing wrong that the vet sees, id try slowing down the food consumption a little....with jack, he hurled a bit if the food was too dry.
Marley, she does not get car sick. This is a few hours after eating her bowl of food, usually at night. BTW, she's on Pro Plan for Big Dogs.

We know she barfs after eating grass, but on these cases we see the grass leaves clearly and we've identified that trend. In this case, it's only her food digested lightly, you can even tell the individual chunks. There is no mucus, it looks like the food was chewed and that's all.

How many cups a day do your dogs eat? Sofi's eating 4 to 6 cups a day in 2 bowls (1 Year old), one in the morning/afternoon and other at night. Do you think it would help if we change her feeding schedule to morning/afternoon?

We'll give the moist food a try, and we'll also let her eat alone instead of with Lennon, that may give her more time to chow down slowly.
I may be wrong but 4-6 cups seems like a lot of food! My guess would be that she's eating too much - and possibly too fast. The grass eating is usually done to settle their stomachs.

I would look into cutting back on her food. Is her weight okay???

Sofi and Lennon seem OK in weight, their bellies do not stand out and lennon feels very muscular to the touch, she feels hard more than fluffy. They get a lot of excercise every other day and are terribly active around us if we start to play with them, but we could be overfeeding, I dunno. Lennon eats 1 or 2 bowls a day (It holds 3 cups topped) , depending on how hungry he is. Sometimes we serve them their morning bowl and it stays untouched until night. When they are really hungry they eat the whole bowl but not much more, and that is usually at night. BritPresSyd, how much does your OES eat?

I will go around the eating too fast/too much route, it seems that everyone else agrees with that and Sofi is smaller than Lennon. Would it help if I feed her lees and more frequently?

About that upset stomach, what could be a good cause for it?
I hope Sofi is ok! It's good that you brought her to the vet.

If you are feeding an inexpensive brand of food, the dog will need more volume (and the stoll will be bigger, too). More expensive brands are usually more dense in nutrients and you have to feed less.

Maybe ice cold water and ice cubes can sometimes cause this, but you probably would have already made that connection if it were the problem. Activity after eating, the same thing.

Twice a day should be good -- check out the quality of your food, I am not familiar with your brand.

A few hours after eating is strange... I assume the vet looked down her throat and checked for anything stuck there -- she's not gagging at other times, is she?

Perhaps some tummy settling like Tums, or tagamet for a few weeks to help heal any irritation in the tummy.

GOOD LUCK!
Has this always happened or just recently? Anything new around the house, such as new animals, children or new animals passing by outside?

We have a case of Anxiety in our cat, which apparently is common. She sees a stray cat outside and gets very upset, then heads straight to the bowl, chomps down and with 30 minutes throws up. Does this sound familiar?
The upset stomach may be from eating too much or too fast. Some dogs also have "reflux" which could be causing the problem - both the eating the grass and the vomitting.

I know that often times pepcid AC is recommended in those cases - but I'd try and see if you can figure out the cause first.

I have 3 dogs - 2 are horrible eaters - they "nibble" and 1 eats everything in sight. My dogs "free" feed (unfortunately - I wish I didn't do that!) - so it's hard to judge how much each one is eating. My sister has basset hounds - both weighing approx 65-70 lbs and they eat 2 cups a day (1 cup morning / 1 cup evening) of Pro Plan. Anymore than that and they end up overweight. The amount of food may depend on their activity levels too.

Try to feed less and see if it helps. If you find that she's not getting enough - feed more often but in smaller portions.

Good Luck!

Saul,

If you don't find that anything is helping - you may want to consider having an x-ray done to make sure there isn't a blockage or anything going on that's preventing her from digesting the food.

Thanks for all your wonderful responses. Actually, they've been very helpful.

Sofi eats everything in sight. Lennon is very dominant and that was an issue in the beginning becuase he didn't let her eat in peace. I saw sofi eating yesterday and she gourges everything so that Lennon can't touch her food, so we're going to arrange that she has a chance to eat slower and at peace.

the episodes that i've been describing are fortunately sporadic, sometimes she can go on a month without barfing, then it happens. The other thing that I noticed is that the episodes are usually at night, so the reflux thing is a good theory. Apart from that, she has a very healthy appetite but looks like she does not know when to stop.

Based on your advise, here's my gameplan:

+ Feed them in the morning and in the afternoon.
+ Feed sofi less food (2 cups instead of 3)
+ Keep and eye on them so Sofi can eat in peace.
+ Give her a tums pill for 2 weeks to make her stomach settle.

The vet checked her and saw nothing wrong with her, but I'm going to see how she feels with these changes. Kristen's suggestion is something we must keep in mind. I'll keep you posted.

Keep those ideas coming!!!

Thanks!
Both of my dogs are nibblers, but they both eat about 3 cups a day each. Dancer is 8 months old and Sky is ten weeks old, but she's a bit of a sausage. Not overweight, but definitely heavier than Dancer was at that age, even though Sky was smaller at 7 weeks than Dancer was at 7weeks...lol...
Sualmr, Drake does the same thing and has also been checked out at the vet. How old is Sofi? The one thing I could come up with is Drakes activity level before and after eating. The throwing up has become less frequent as Drake has gotten older, come to think of it Drake has not thrown up in quite awhile. Drake is 9 months old. He did not do it alot just occasionally and he also gets sick when he eats grass. The food also did not look like it had been digested and came out pretty much like it went in. Boy I am thinking as I type, anyway come to think of it Drake has not thrown up since I bought a dog food dishes that raises to about a foot off the floor so Drake does not have to bend over or lay down to eat and drink. Tha may have something to do with it also. 8)
Well, seems that the barfing episodes came to an end. :D After changing her schedule and raising her plate the barfing has dissapeared. I also gave her a few tums but the difference in the way she eats was definitive after my wife rised her plate with a bucket.

I also miscalculated how much they eat, now that I measured it with more attention, it's down to 4 cups when they are really hungry. Also, with the new schedule they seem to want to eat only once day with a nibble for breakfast.

Thanks for all the advice! Isn't this forum great?
