Visit to Newark, New Jersey

I will be in Newark NJ next Wednesday/Thursday on a business trip.

I am not sure what hotel I will be staying in, but I think it will be either close to the airport or the courthouse.

I may have a few hours Thursday afternoon before my flight back.
If I do, any ideas on where I should dine or visit or whatever? Unfortunately it is not a blanket expense account trip, so any sight-seeing is on my dime...so cheap or free is good!

Feel free to post or PM any information.

Thanks!

I've heard that VerveUp is either cheap or free. You should give her a shout!

8O  :sidestep:
I would visit the nearest exit out of Newark.
I thought Newark was only for layovers. People go there?
There isn't much to see in Newark itself. But you can take a train from either downtown Newark (Newark Penn Station) or Newark Airport into Manhattan in 15 minutes or so. Another option is a bus or cab to Liberty Park, which has a great view of the Statue of Liberty and also has a Science Center. If you have time you can take a ferry from Liberty Park to the Statue or Ellis Island.

Sue (proud to be a Jersey Girl)
Anheiser Bush is in Newark, right across from the airport.
There is also a prison close by. Ah, NJ.... how I miss it!

I'm from Jersey but not really near Newark (1.5 hours away - with no traffic). Now if you fly into Philly I'd pick you up at your gate!! I agree with Sue that you should try to hang out in NYC rather than Newark. Newark is pretty ghetto.

I would love to come meet you, but it's been tough for me lately to get out of the office during the week.

Its been years since I was there(it was bad when we lived in Staten Island.....20+ years ago)...but yeah I totally agree!

Have fun :)
My flight is this afternoon.....And I am back Thursday evening.....Did I mention how I hate flying?

Stressed out here....... :cow: :twitch:

I am bringing my camera, so if I have time I will see if I can get close enough to a view of the Statue of Liberty....( I don't get out much, so have never been even close to there) 8O 8O

I hope the boys take good care of the pooches..... :x
That's a quick trip Nicole! You'll be back before you know it.
I'm back, and exhausted.... 8O

Left Toronto Wednesday evening, but the flight was an hour and a half late leaving. Lots of time for my anxieties to rise...But complimentry alcoholic drinks on the plane, due to the delay helped...

Arrived in Newwark before 9:OO PM and got our rental car for the , what was supposed to be, a 7 minute drive to the hotel....We got there at 10:30 PM !!!!...We drove up and down the I 9 and 1, ended up on a toll bridge...the 95 I think? and then in some residential areas trying to get back....up and down industrial streets, we were so lost and tired...We could see the hotal but couldn't get there...

Ate, and got to bed after midnite...Up at 6:00 AM, Thursday morning, and off to Elizabeth....Got lost again, in contruction on the 178 (I think), in the middle of rush hour....Tie-ups getting on and off ramps, somehow hit the toll road again.... then finally made it, to our meeting 45 minutes late.

We left Elizabeth at 3:30 PM, but did not get everything done, so I MAY have to go back.

Got to the airport on time to grab a bite to eat, and we were relaxing waiting for our 6:10 PM flight home....It was delayed due to storms in Newark, New York and the Toronto area....Then we sat on the tarmac for over 3 hours, delayed still, so I had lots of time to get more stressed about flying. But again, complimentry alcoholic drinks on the plane, due to the delay helped...

We arrived in Toronto at 11:10 PM...over 4 hours late. I was exhausted, and took today off work to recover.

So no sight-seeing, except the interstates and highways, but at least we know our way around IF we do end up going back. The woman I was travelling with agreed that we would take an extra day, if we did, and find a place on Manhatten Island for a really nice seafood dinner.....And do shopping and picture-taking...

So we were unable to take advantage of this trip, due to weather problems, but if we go back, it will be different.

BTW, did I mention that I HATE FLYING ???????
OMG.. your trip sounded like it SUCKED big time....maybe your next time will be better...

Sounds like hell. What a crappy trip. Hope next time is MUCH better.
It sounds like the trip from hell. I am glad you made it back safe and sound.

Welcome to NJ!! Although Pennsylvania is worse.

I'm curious about which airline you took that actually cared enough to give you free booze!?
Didn't sound like the trip was much fun, but the good part is you didn't have to spend too much time in Newark.

We were there in Sept. and our hotel "overlooked the river". It really looked like drainage area. They have a very nice Performance Center, but that is about it.

Ditto.... I hate flying too!

Air Canada

I wish I had known you were planning to rent a car... I would have told you "NOOOO!". I travel a lot, and in most places it's much easier and comparably priced to take a taxi or arrange car service. And much better on the nerves.

By the way, if you go back you might consider a hotel outside of Newark. I can personally recommend the Woodbridge Hilton, maybe 20 minutes from EWR, close to Elizabeth and very close to a nice shopping mall
OMG!!! I can't but laugh because the first time I drove to Newark Airport was to pick up my boyfriend when he was coming home from Atlanta. I was looking for the short term parking and saw it too late. Nobody would let me over. So I figure....okay I'll just circle around. Next thing I know I am about to get onto the NJ Turnpike 8O 8O I hate the Turnpike and always get lost every time I take it. I usually end up going in the wrong direction when I did take it.

Anyhow I see the toll booth straight ahead and refuse to go through it. I see my opportunity and pull a u-turn right across the double yellow lines and cones.  Luckily I ended up back at the airport. :phew:

I now know my way around the airport and surrounding highways pretty well. Even though there is constant construction and changes in exits.... I can handle it no problem.... Just keep me away from the NJ Turnpike.... I HATE THAT ROAD!!!
I live in the "burbs" of Newark. Everyone in my family knows better than to ask me to drive them to the airport!
If they were giving away free money I wouldn't go to Newark.
Only reason to go there is if you are looking for street drugs!
It was a beautiful city when I was a girl (60's).
Since the race riots it is just a burned out city.
I dread being summoned for jury duty, cause that is where i would have to go
8O 8O 8O
yes, if you go back, do your sightseeing in NYC or other parts of Jersey.
