Not crate training

I was wondering if someone could give me pointers of how to train my puppy if I was not going to use the crate? We've had him for three days now, and no accident has occurred. If I wanted him to be trustworthy, i.e. not getting into things or chewing things he shouldn't, when I'm not there, how would I do that? I might still use the crate, but he seems so happy just walking around free and we haven't had to clean anything up yet.

There's really no way to train him not to get into things when you're around, it really comes with time and trust. Even though you've done good for 3 days (which is a downright miracle for a young pup!), that's not to say that it'll continue in that fashion. He will chew things and he will get into something so it really isn't safe for him to be out and about without supervision at all times. Without stimulation and company, a bored pup can wreak havoc! Peeing and pooping is the least of your problems.

As he gets older, to start building trust in the house, you can start leaving him alone for short amounts of time and then gradually increase the time away as he can handle it. We started by leaving Clyde alone for a 15 minute run to the drug store, then an hour while we went to dinner, a couple hour shopping trip and so on. I leave all 3 of my dogs loose in the house, uncrated with full run while I'm gone and we've been without incident since my youngest boy was about 8 or 9 months old (and I mean incident like a chewed up magazine, not a potty incident!).
I definitely recommend a crate... if you don't want to crate, I'd make sure you have a small puppy proof area you can gate off to leave the pup if you're not home to watch.

My Bree is not being crated either, even though I'm a firm believer in crate training. She is paper trained so if I don't get her outside fast enough to potty she'll go on the paper. When I have to go out I gate off a section of a room.
I put her in a crate once in a while when I go out just to make sure she is used to one in case it's needed.
I'm a little confused about crate training. This may sound stupid-but as I posted before-I am a first time dog owner. I grew up with one but this is my first full ownership of one.

How long have people been crate training? I just never really seemed to hear much about it. Well it seems that way to me at least. Maybe I'm wrong. What exactly is it for? So there is no peeing and pooping? Destroying? Or both, probably? Just curious of this section all about crates lol!
