Shaving Mr.Bones for the first time....forwards - or backwar

Just discovered that my usual groomer has gone away for 3 months.. and he's in bad need of a shave! (Mr.Bones, I mean). I've had these Oster A5 clippers with a No10 blade sitting in reserve for some time now, so I got them out today and started on the boy.. Did I get a shock? Wow! They almost went down to the pink! With a bit more care, I continued for about another 20 minutes or so, and he's not looking too bad. I always have him shaved as he's in the sea every day, drags sand into the house when he's shaggy, and generally, I feel it's better for him esp in the summer.
However... I did struggle a bit with the clippers.. after spending about 2 hours on this great site, I realise now that perhaps I should wash the blades, as they're brand new, and also give them a bit of an oiling now and then. but.. here's the question... Do you shave "with the grain" or against it? It seems to me that against the grain gets more off, but leaves very little room for error. I should say that there are no attachments on the shave. I've seen him part way through a shave before, and it was just like they shave sheep..... is that right? How long, in general, would a set on blades last? 2 or 3 shaves?

Thanks!

Nichollette

I go with the grain....less chance of razor burn....plus panda ends up a little softer!
