Flowerbeds are not for sheepies!

So earlier tonight we put the finishing touches on the fence we built around our backyard. Just as I was putting the last latch on our backyard gate we let Milton off his leash.

Well I can't say I'm overly shocked, but it wasn't a pretty sight. The first thing he did was run under the deck and then he proceeded to head straight for our big garden at the back of our yard. He found the back corner and decided to dig a little hole, run his face through it, and then stomp through as much dirt as he could.

I couldn't help but laugh at the dork but when it was all said and done he was bloody filthy!!!

Any tips on the best way to keep him out of the garden?

No tips just sympathize. Every day Breena picks the tops off my flowers and brings me a lovely arrangement of stems.
Some people train.... some people choose dog or beautiful landscaped yard
A small electric fence goes around my flower beds that go around the house. The rest have to fend for themselves!
George digs the same type of plants up in the garden no matter where they are!! gardening is not his strong point!!!

I used to have a beautiful garden pre owning a sheepie!!
Merlin used to do the same thing....even tho we had a fenced yard I never let him out unattended at that age. I was stubborn, I wanted a nice garden and the dog too LOL I would have to continually pick him up out of the garden.....finally we just put a small fence around the garden so he didn't go in there and when he was older he never wanted to dig there. By the time Avalon came along we gave up having grass and the whole yard was pea gravel, even the gardens so there wasn't much to dig.
I don't have much of a garden in the back at this house.....there didn't seem any point since its for the kids and the dogs.....my nice garden is in the front of the house. So instead I have little holes all over the grass,....everytime the kids find another hole they fill it with rocks....I have my work cut out for me filling the holes back with dirt and grass seed
We have about 19 acres and Sophie has free run. I have a lot plants but a little garden off the front porch. Where is she most interested? In the little garden! She jumps in and out and the plants are squashed but still flowering. And yes the tops of the flowers do seem to be very desirable to her!
Bailey was very interested in the vegetable garden last summer - would eat the peppers, tomatoes and strawberries right off the plants  Sure, I can laugh because my husband is the farmer, not me! He put up a 3 foot fence all around the veggie garden - Bailey could get over it, and occasionally did, but it was enough to give him the idea that he wasn't welcome.

Fortunately for me I grow roses and Bailey has figured those out the hard way
I'm trying to find a university interested in developing plantings that are resistant to being crushed and twisted under a large happy sheepie saucer paw.

Even if the plants were paw hardy, I'm sure there is nothing I can do about my boy’s desire to deadhead (before the blossom dies) with each trip through the garden.
Yup have the same kinda problem here...Remy loves to sleep right by the house windows. One of the windows is by our flower bed, and one spot the rain doesn't normally get...so she is often found there. Squishes the plants, she has other fav areas to dig.
Oh they are so helpful in the garden..........NOT!! We have to physcially keep them out through fencing and have used electric wires as well. Hated to do it. Once the garden is up and "dogproof", well somewhat dogproof, they can come out. Mainly the stick to the pathways, except Simone (MO). Woe be if the beds are being flooded.........she'd paddle up and down with that intense sheepdog look, "Where are the fish?"

I'm sure I've shared this before: Years ago we'd receive shipments from rose companies of their new roses for next year to try out.........all the "perks" of a garden columnist........anyway the rose garden was full and we still have several roses. So I sent Paul out to the south garden with instructions just to put them anywhere. I look out the window and see Paul digging a hole on the east of the spirea and Simone digging a hole on the west side of the spirea. I just stood there and laughed myself silly.
Shelby likes to lay on top of my flowers. Last year after replacing ALL the plants, I bought decorative plant stakes & put lots of them in among the flowers. It works, so far :D
8) Flower beds, isn't that just another name for "doggie bed". Both China and Violet love to go out and lay in my flower beds. I think they think I have made them special just for them. lol
I don't really mind him trampling on the flowers a bit. The part that I don't like is when he comes out of the flower bed and his beard and paws are totally soiled with dirt.

Maybe I'll make him a body suit for when he goes out.
I am hoping that my plan will work I have planted creeping tyme and other herb ground cover to help keep the paws from getting to muddy. These plants are supposed to be good for high traffic areas so it should hold up to Miley laying on it. The added benefit is that is smells great so if she lays on it she well smell good too. Its my little garden experiment and is working so far but well see.
:D Last few years when I had a real garden, I did plant creeping thyme and a few other hardy plants between spaced pavers on one walk way and it wroked well. Bentley used to lie in the shade on top of some ground cover. 8) Willoughby so far prefers grass. :phew: In our townhouse pocket handkechief garden, I'm teaching him that the beds are not for him. They are crammed with everything I could find/transplant and it works so far. The trick is not to have space between plants as that is an open invitation.
Obe would and still does pick the tops of flowers and spit them out, never breaking stride. I would not even think pf planting a garden. Considering the all rock back yard.
That is funny that most of them do this. As soon as we go out my front door Piper heads straight for the flower bed.
I've had great luck with wooley tyme in high traffic areas. It holds up to any and all Sheepie paws.
Finally a bad trait that Chauncey doesn't have :yay: He seems to enjoy smelling the flowers and herbs, in particular the heather. He stops to smell, but doesn't try to go in to the beds. Yes, finally something to celebrate. :go: :cheer: :clappurple:
