leptospororis

Not sure if I spelt this correctly. There was a segment about this on our local news a few minutes ago. This is a bacterial thing that can be passed on to humans. It comes from citrus rats and raccoons (and other critters) thru their urine and when a dog comes in contact with that (wet or dry) it goes for the dogs kidneys and can be deadly.....with humans, you just get sick. So while there are now over 200 strains of this lepto virus, the "new" vaccine only covers 4. Has anyone had their dog immunized against this? They say the side effects are minimal. Apparently, they are seeing more of this in Florida :( .

There are several threads about lepto and it's vaccine on this forum, if you use the search tool you'll find tons...

It's a very risky vaccine, and the vaccine itself is not very effective so I think each needs to weigh the benefit and risks. I do not give my dogs the lepto vaccine.

If you're in a high risk area then it's worth considering.
I do remember seeing this addressed on the forum....I was trying to type this while watching so I didn't forget anything!!! Where they are stuck on was who was high risk and who wasn't....condo dogs for instance will be a low risk dog. Dogs that visit bark parks are high risk. Sam is neither.....but we have citrus rats on the island. And big black racer snakes that love the rats :D ! She's going in for her year check-up next week, so I'll ask about it then.
They did make it sound like with the new vaccine, side effects were minimal, just irritation and I think tiredness?

My second OES died from a vaccine reaction. Check out the site at critterfixer.com for more info on recommendations. My currentt OES only gets the rabies vaccine.
We chose not to have Bing vaccinated against this even though our region is the correct climate. . .
Scarlet IS getting this vaccine as we live on a farm....I would say we have 14 acres of field mice, moles, voles, possums etc..what ever rodent you can think of....we probably have 8O....so the risk for her is very high.
Scarlet's littermate had this vaccine a few weeks ago with her other vaccines, she only suffered mild diahhrea. I chose to have Scarlet have this vaccine separate from her other vaccinations. She is getting it this friday.

That's interesting... I had never heard of this until we moved to TN. The vet told us that if she was going to be going to dog parks, camping, near streams, etc.. that she should have it. They told us that the risks for a big dog were minimal, so Callie has gotten it - twice I think. She has had no problems. They did say that smaller dogs "don't handle it as well", so we've decided not to give it to our pug so far. But she is going in for her annual shots next week, so I'm sure they'll ask again. I'm interested to hear if anyone has given it to a smaller dog like that...
Wrecktech, I am so sorry to hear about your dog. It's horrible when you think you are doing something good and it goes totally in the opposite direction.

Emily, I'm leaning towards no....we don't live out in the country. I'll spend some time later and read up on all the post about this. Her exam is next week, so I have time to educate myself.

Thanks for all the responses!
I know I posted asking this same question back in february when my Vet wanted me to get the vaccine for my puppy. We too live in an area where there is a high risk of this and my Vet's dog actually died from it.

We went ahead with the vaccination. However, I will caution you. It is given in two doses I think three weeks or so apart. One dose is for the four strains and I beleive the other dose is for the newer strains. Ask your Vet which strain the vaccine is for and which strain is prevalent in your area.

Also, tell your Vet you are afraid of a reaction. The Vets have in their mind the reaction is only commn in smaller breeds. But they are wrong. Many and OES had severe reactions. But if your Vet knows you are worried about a reaction, he can give something before to counter any possible reaction. I forget exactly what the pre-vaccinatin was and would ahve to look it up but that's what I did an my pup was fine - alittle sleepy for a while but just fine.

Email me privately if you have more questions. I just went through this so if I can help I will.
