Has anyone heard about this IL breeder?

My partner and I are looking for our first sheepdog and found a breeder in IL named Jamie Schaefer. Is anyone familiar with this breeder?

Also, my partner is leary about getting a sheepdog because he doesn't "want hair on EVERYTHING" and he doesn't want the house to smell like dog. I'm trying to convince him that it is manageable. Any words of wisdom that I can pass along?

One thing you may want to consider, if it is the sheepie personality, rather than the shaggy look that attracts you, is to keep your sheepdog shaved down. Much easier to avoid hair on the furniture, and to give frequent baths to keep him smelling sweet.
Welcome to the forum! Do you live in Illinois? I'd love to hear from you. Please PM me.
lol...tell your partner that sheepdogs dont ''shed'' they have hair not fur....you will get some dust bunnies here and there but honestly no worse than human hair....then again, my husband says that if my hair carried the bubonic plague, we'd all be dead...I shed that much 8O

There is also hair cuts too, if you arent planning on showing puppy cut is great...the hair is trimmed to about 3/4 to 1 1/2'''s long....good for summer or us lazy people!!! :D
Thanks for the advice. I have one more question. The puppies I am looking at have pink and black noses. The AKC website states that OES noses are always black. Is the pink a bad sign or no big deal? Thanks again!
they are usually pink at a young age and fill in with age and time....their pads usually stay pink.....
For one, Jamie Schaefer is not on the OESCA breeder referral list (weight that as much as you want):

Two, if your partner is not prepared for the smell of dog, the drippings of a wet beard, the probability of a 90 lbs lap dog and never ever, ever being able to go to the bathroom by himself again, then the OES may not be for him. I always thought this doc was great for the introduction to the breed (and other breeds have similar information pamphlets):

Please do further checking on this breeder. By Googling the name, I found this ad:

Description: Old English Sheepdog Puppies for sale, AKC registered, Dob 2/15/07 3 females & 4 males. Both parents on premises. Hand raised in our home with lots of love. Our 11th year providing loving puppies to your family. All shots and wormed. Great with children. xxx-xxx-xxxx

I'd be skeptical of puppies from this ad. No health guarantees noted, no clearances on the hips of the dam and sire mentioned. Nothing about CERF (eyes), BAER (hearing) or thyroid testing. Do these people breed for the betterment of the breed or purely for the money? Will they give you names of others who have purchased their puppies and were they satisfied?

What will your relationship be with the breeder after you purchase the puppy? You should be able to depend on your breeder to be there for you for the life of your dog. Ask lots of questions and if you KNOW you will not be able to walk away from a puppy that is in poor condition or in a bad environment, don't go to see it.

There are several great threads here on the forum addressing the purchase of a puppy. I have never heard of this breeder but am extremely wary of internet ads for pets. You're talking about a long time commitment so be sure this is the breed you want and a breeder you can trust.

I would contact folks who HAVE sheepdogs, maybe on this forum....and go visit with the dogs. See what they are like in real life, not the nice, posed pictures....all cleaned up, and looking well-behaved...

Maybe even offer to foster an adult for a rescue group...

They are a LOT of work, and need lots of attention, excercise, grooming and training.

But they are the BEST!!!! Once you have one in your life you are hooked...
and if you get one with a brown and blue eye like Duchess and many others here on the forum just think how lucky you are :D , I was told .. way back in time the drovers thought two different coloured eyes meant two brains and they were prized for that :D

Way cool! I can't tell Miss Ellie (my blue/brown little girl) that story, she already thinks she's the smartest dog in the world and would be insufferable with that knowledge.
Welcome, I agree with what everyone said, you really need to research this breed. They are people dogs, do not like to be left alone, they are most happy when they are right in the middle of your family life. There is so much time spent on grooming ,if you keep them in full coat. When reading your post, a flag went up when your partner mentioned smell and hair, if you keep sheepies groomed properly, whether short or long they are no different than any other pet. My sheepies are high energy, we spend alot of time with them, we do obedience, agility, and conformation, not to mention the grooming . Read as much as you can, then decide. If it is a go, you will have the biggest bundle of love you could ask for. They are truly an amazing breed :D
My dogs don't follow me into the bathroom because they've learned they cannot--although they would be happy to keep me company there, too. But the point needs to be well taken: OES are not stand-offish dogs. They do tend to follow you around, lay on your feet (or lap) and/or lean up against you until you think you might topple over. They are not snobs: they do the same with everyone in your family and any visitors that come, unless specifically trained not to pester the guests.

Their grooming, exercise and training needs are considerable. Any extra hair is trivial. If one of your family members is very sensitive to dog smells, perhaps you might think very hard about whether getting an OES (which don't, imo, smell) or any other dog is really the right move. Dogs, especially OES, become real members of the family and if there is a good possibillity that will not happen in your household, please reconsider.

If you and your partner do decide that an OES is the right choice for you, please do check out this forum for lots of help, support, sharing, and companionship.

I agree with Nita, the ad tells you nothing. If your pup ends up deaf or with hip dysplasia "hand raised with lots of love" isn't going to help you or your pup. If they don't have some type of health guarantee, and from the looks of it they don't, you could be setting yourself up for heartbreak, huge vet bills, and worse. There are threads on this forum concerning puppies from byb, mills, etc., and all are heartbreaking :( . Just because I've never heard of this breeder doesn't mean she's bad, but warning bells are ringing. Also, if you have to convince your partner about even getting an OES you may want to consider a different breed. I'm not trying to be negative toward you but there are already so many OES in rescue I'd hate to see another one. Would you consider fostering?
Please post pictures and give us an update if/when you get an OES! :)
Molly,
I just sent you another private message. I'm not sure where you live, but you are more than welcome to come visit our sheepies. Not to brag but I think most people will tell you that we keep our sheepdogs very clean due to our allergies :D

Im sorry to butt in but I purchased a puppy from Jamie Schaefer and was very happy with my purchase, max has become quite the friend, and I wont mention the fact that we have never gone through the horror stories that most have and that are cataloged through and through this website. Now could that be because of his training at home or his genes who knows. This much I will tell you she stands behind every one of her puppies. and she has always been there for service and advice after the sale of Max. I took max to the vet as soon as we got home and the vet found no issues at all. You really have to take things you hear with a grain of salt on here take what you need and leave the rest as it can be really easy to get on someone's naughty list very quickly on this site. My advice to you is to check Jamie's puppy's out and see if you like them and her but do it in person and don't pay any attention to what anyone has to say about someone they haven't met their selves.
