Sheepy is the love of my life!

Hi, My Sheepdogs name is Sheepy( I kno original right:-p his first name is actually Sir but he has been known as Sheepy ever since we got him) He is 13 if Im not mistaken. A few weeks ago my parents were on vacation and he is very attached to my father and by the third day of their trip he was starting to act funny.I called home from work one day and my grandma said he wouldnt get off the ground. Of course I left work early and came home to find him struggling to walk and when he would walk it would be weirdly.Needless to say Sheepy loves going under our deck so we brought him inside so he couldnt.I had to leave for my own vacation the next day but my parents were coming home that night. He still was unable to walk by the time they got home so they brought him to the Emergency Vet where they had him up and walking in no time. They prescribed steroids for him and apparently he got better while I was away and is much better now although he has his days. Everyday we give him glucosomene(I cant spell its late lol) pills and he takes them happily. He is very spoiled but still the love our lives. The vet said he might have had a herniated disk or it was just his arthritis acting up cause he missed my parents soo much..like I said he does has problems getting up on some days but Im more then happy to help him up ha ha. It breaks my heart to see him like that some days but I grew up with this dog(I was around 6 when we got him Im now 18 heading into college haha). He seems really really happy so thats all that matters I guess!

My guy is also the same age and has the same problems and we also give him what you do, plus, flax seed oil, fish oil, vit C, MSM, vit B and vit E and licorice (sp) herbs..we still need to pick him up for a boost when he wants up, but it's like we have our own talk between us and we understand each other, he still will eat me out of house and home and he sleeps most of the day, but still appears to be a happy camper, so we will do whatever we have to until he chooses his time to leave us to join his sisters!

I think we all love our sheepies on this board!
:D
When we took our Jake off of his pain meds, within 3 days he couldn't get up off of the floor.

When we restarted the pain meds, he could get up off the floor -- that was probably 2 years before he left us.

Herbal remedies and diet are great, but when your friend can't get off the floor, please try pain meds and see if they work for him or her. Dogs are programmed to hide pain and weakness from the pack...

Our guy lived for 5 years on pain meds...at least 2 or 3 of them he wouldn't have had.

Well thank you both. Like I said sheepy still has his days but we all help out in giving him a boost. Im just alittle worried about him in the next couple weeks because although my mother is very sick and has to stay home from work, she will soon be returning and I'll be starting college and my younger sister will be starting school too and then no one will be home with him all day long like we are now. We really believe he has seperation anxiety, infact my dad is not going to Scotland with us next year just so he can stay with Sheepy incase anyhting happens..thats how much we love our baby(far from a baby at his age lol) but hes still a baby to us. The only thing I have a question about is that he does this weird thing after he barks. Its like he is saying "yack" and he like makes the appearance of a yawn..does anyone know what this might be?

I think that "bark gag" is part of old age - and probably a sign of some heart/lung disease (due to old age). Brittney - my 12 1/2 year old does the same thing. She is also having the same problems with mobility as Sheepy. I'm not sure if you mentioned whether Sheepy was on any pain medication - but if he isn't - you may want to consider that (Rimadyl, Metacam, etc.) - it may help him with his hips/arthritis.

Also - I give Brittney Chondroitin/Glucosamine, Ester C and Vitamin E - daily - I find that those supplements - along with her Metacam have helped her to keep going.

Brittney has been having some pretty bad days lately - and it seems to do alot with the weather - the higher the humidity - the worse she is. She's also pretty bad in the stormy weather. It's possible that the weather in combination with the stress of your father not being there - caused a flare up with Sheepy.

Best Wishes to Sheepy! I know how hard it is when their health starts to deteroriate - it seems to happen overnight! I'll keep him in my thoughts!

As of right now Sheepy is not on any pain meds but Im tryin to get my parents to buy him some. We have noticed his mobility is affected by the weather. When its colder or now that you mention it if it get humid. He doesnt seem to mind though because he knows he gets a massage when he comes in the house. Ever since Sheepy was little he would walk up to you and put his butt by you and look back like"Rub my hips!" so of course we would oblige and now whoever comes to the house or dares sit on the couch has to rub Sheepy's hips lol..we usually have to coax my dad into doing it he doesnt like to "rub sheepy's butt" as he puts it lmao..thank you so much for thinking about Sheepy with my mom being sick and then Sheepy having that spell the past few weeks have been rough on us...hopefully both will get better soon ha ha..although sheepy always gets better when there is food around. Today he actually came running over to me for a potato pancake(of course I gave him one I can hear you all gasping now lol). Sheepy is spoiled lol after we have dinner he has his own I KNOW I KNOW its bad but he loves his food(especially speghetti lmao) Alrighty Im off to work thank you all for thinking about him again!!

According to Baxter and Cassiopia (our two sheepies) there is nothing wrong with spaghetti - although they really prefer tortillini.

If you haven't convinced your folks to get Sheepy some pain meds when he seems to be in pain, try one plain aspirin (generic type is fine). Our veterinarian recommended this for our older dog and it seems to help.

Sheepy isnt picky about what kind of speghetti it is hes just picky about it having sauce on it...if you put noodles on the floor he wont eat them for awhile because he waits for sauce to be added...and then if you put sauce on them and its too cold he wont eat it until its been nuked in the microwave...hes so particular about his people food its sad lol...And for the pain thing...like I said he doesnt seem to be in pain so we didnt see a need to put him on any meds but glucosomane so far but Im sure hes gonna be on pain meds soon especially with the cooler weather approaching...
