Jeez louise!! First day of training was rough!!

Well Today was Alberts first day of Obidience classes. They are at petsmart, and of course it being a Saturday there were like 976 dogs there. So it took a lot of strength to get him inside the training area. He wants to be friends with everyone, but unfortunatley his size is intimidating.
There are only two other dogs in the class: A HUGE akita, and a shihtzu. As soon as the akita came in he automatically wants to go over sniff, and start playing. THe Akita barks at him, and Albert goes crazy! The trainer pinned him to the ground. (She called it something, but I can't remember) She told me that anytime he starts acting aggresive, hold him like that. Well I was basically on the floor with my butt stuck up in the air the whole class. :? When he finally did calm down enough to do what she was teaching, he did REALLY good. I am afraid that it is a my fault, I should have started training alot earlier. But Oh well, we'll get through this! Just wanted to share. Any encouragment would be well appreciated!

LOL I am sorry your experience wasn't that much fun, but I would immagine it will get better. Just like kids they get very excited, want to meet everyone and say hi. We are starting training next week and I have a feeling it will go very similar to yours. Just hand in there, and he will learn to behave. After all, that is what training all about. Last session he learned that he can't come up and say hi until you tell him to. So the lesson taught him something, even though it wasn't what you expected. You are a good mommie taking him to school! :D
PetsMart training area is usually pretty small, so this will be tougher. Hang in there, it's for your dog's best interest. Actually in those training classes everyone is looking at the dogs and saying, "Boy, I'm glad mine doesn't do that." Your butt will be mostly unnoticed....well, I'm sure there are some guys there who would disagree. When you practice at home you'll have more room to move around.....it is easier.
i love watching the classes at petsmart, its so funny because theres always one dog thats just all over the place and you can just see the stress on their owners face! haha i get to laugh and thank god its not me that time!

but i think petsmart classes are really great because theres stimulus coming from all over so if you can get your dog to obey you when people animals and little kids are all over the place then thats awesome.

so hang in there- its a tough environment but you will both get used to it and im sure albert will do great!
LMAO@pin Albert on the ground.

i have heard that before i believe that is called domintating??and it basically puts your dog in his/her place.

arent baby sheepies so wonderful!!LOL!!!!hehe!!they have NO pride!!

i once had a wire fox terrier who was NUTS!!!he was a naughty boy ALL the time,so i took him to obedence *sp? class and guess what?him and i won 1st place in our fun match!!LOL!i could NOT believe this he was 5yrs old,and plus he was very NAUGHTY all the time.so im sure your albert will learn alot.good luck to ya :D
Yes you have to have a strong will with some of our little babies. I still can't always get Lola to calm down at class (and we're at week 8) Though I must say last time she was great. But some days I have a mini breakdown cause she just won't focus. But the important thing is to work with Albert at home a lot. I'm sure like Lola he's very smart, but very rambunctious. That's what can be so frustrating....she can do all the exercises and knows the commands, but when there are other doggies, she thinks it's playtime. Thanks for letting me vent too, but as everyone says....you got to hang in there, it will pay off in the end.

good luck
Sue
