We have a HUGE diesel generator.......... It was a very sore point in my house. Doug and I battled over it for a couple years before I finally relented. The generator is big enough to run the entire house from but I can't tell you much more than that.

I do know that since he bought it and wired it in we haven't lost our power for even a MINUTE
I prefer the old flashlight and lantern method myself but then when we do lose power, its usually only for a few hours.

Ginny, Ginny, Ginny.

Our house is all electric. Anything that does anything in the house is electric, except for water which is town supplied. I bought a small 5,000 watt generator and wired up a feed to the house. All extremely amateur and dangerous, but it provided enough electricity to heat a room, heat the hot water, or cook, but just one at a time. :D It would be enough to keep us going for a few days if we lost the power mid winter.

Before I bought the generator, we lost power 2 or 3 times a year. After we bought the generator? Not once.

Before we went on our big trip, we sold the generator. Since we came back we have lost power a couple of times a year, but only for short periods. The reason is we have the motorhome and it's generator in the driveway, we could always move out into the motorhome if needed. If we sell that, I'm sure we will lose power for a week.
The newer generators are MUCH quieter than the old horrible rattle your teeth ones I grew up with! We dont have one yet (they are pricey) but I want one badly, since we have LOTS of outages here.

Simon's mom....the whole candle and lantern thing is kinda fun and romantic...but it WONT keep you on OES.org! Priorities, woman!
Ron, I think that is called Murphy's law.

All I know is that if we had not HAD to buy the Generator I would have had my new COUCH a whole lot sooner    AND as far as I'm concerned the couch has gotten a LOT more use
If you get one, please have it done by someone who is good.
