I adopted Tyler over 7 years ago. He had been adopted by a family who knew nothing about sheepies. I will never forget when they announced that he had just "learned" to drink out of the toilet! (yuck) They said this with pride. They had had him about 6 months when they decided that he wasn't a "fit" with their family and wanted to give him back. The rescue lady, Karen and I met and drove to their home for the interview. We walked in and sat in the family room. Tyler came directly to me and sat on my feet. He didn't move for the entire interview which lasted for nearly an hour. He was just coming up to his fourth birthday. He was skinny, about 60 pounds and 31 inches at the shoulders, and matted. I later learned that their idea of a bath was to hose him off in the drive way, he had very bad ear infections due to this method of bathing.

We clipped a leash on him, payed the adoption fee and off we went. Karen called weekly to see if things were working out, they were. Tyler and I fell in love that day and we have had a love afair ever since. He would crawl into my lap any time I was in the sitting position. We took him to the Vets and got his ears cleared up, we had him shaved and bathed and he just glowed. He was so happy. He had someone to love.

Tyler has one issue and it is that he tends to be dog aggresive that is driven by fear of dogs. Any dog that is not an OES that is. We work around that by not taking him into situations that will make him fearful. Tyler is now 11+ years of age. He is a happy, loving and amazing dog. I didn't think any dog would get me past the loss of my prior dog partner Ivory, but he did it.

I favor adoption for many reasons, but Tyler is the best reason ever. If I had not answered the ad in the mini mart part of the paper, I would have never known this kind of love could exist.

When I knit in the winter months, Tyler lays on the sofa next to me with his head on my thigh and he sighs his contentment. When I come home from work he runs to the den to wait for me to rest before I get dinner ready and we cuddle and watch the news together. He knows me better than my husband, if Tyler would learn how to mow the lawn and make coffee in the morning... humm, I wonder...?

I have since adopted our little girly girl, Kiera. She is very different than Tyler, but as lovable as he is. She too has her issues, like food, and garbaqe. But over the last year and a half, she has become such a wonderful addition to our family, I wouldn't trade her for anything and Tyler loves her too.

Please write and share your happy adoption stories.

Thanks

Hi Tylers Mom,

I love your avatar - it's a wonderful pic!

Everyone at the dog park which I frequent everyday is enamored with the story of Panda aka Robins rescue. It's on page 2 of this forum under Old English Sheepdog in need of rescue but what to do? , written by Roy and Elby.

In a nutshell Panda aka Robin was flown all the way to my home in Vancouver from Hong Kong, thanks to Roy and Elby whom wrote about him on this site. Thanks to Ron for making it possible for OES people from all over the world to correspond and thanks to all those that provided support and assistance while the story enfolded. I couldn't have asked for a more loving and loyal dog.

I enjoyed reading about your boy Tyler, I believe the rescues know when they have a person whom loves them and they feel secure in that knowledge. Panda has continued to flourish at my house and even though I'm now up to four dogs - he holds a special place in my heart. I love him so much!!

I'd encourage anyone that is interested in getting a sheepie to perhaps look into a rescue if they have the passion and will commit to caring for them for the rest of their lives. Some have a bit of baggage behind them so don't want to sugar coat everything but once they trust you the bond is so strong.
Marianne,
Panda's story is so wonderful as are you. My life with Tyler was very similar. I was not told that he had aggression issues, I had to find them out on my own. Someother time we can talk about that. But I love how you wrote about all of his steps forward and his few steps backward. I know how much you love him, it's in your voice when you speak of him, much the way I feel about my boy. Like I said, love at first sight.

Thanks for your story and for everyone on this forum.
Loved your story! He sounds so special. I knit also and Albert will do the same thing, Curl right up beside me on the couch. They are so precious.
