Wanting a puppy

Hello everyone, I am from South Africa and here are no puppies available. On;y two register breeders but one of them I can't get hold of and the other lady had puppies but she is not selling them. I would love to import a puppy. You know who are reputable breeders and I will appreciate it if any one can help me to fine a puppy.
Thank you :D

Please take a few moments to register for the forum. I don't know if we have any South African members but it's a great way to meet other OES people and get information! Plus if you register, people can contact you through the forum, too. :)
There now I am registerd.
Hi welcome to the forum

Here is a link for UK Sheepdog clubs contact the secretarys of the clubs for their lists of reputable breeders, hope this helps you in your search, good luck & best wishes in your search for an OES :D . I think the UK would be the closest option for you to import one into South Africa.

Nice to see you here!
Welcome! I hope you have lots of luck finding an OES puppy.
Thank all of you for making me feel welcome.

:?: POP, AKC-OFA cert :?: What does all of that mean? :?
All those mean the dogs are registered with the Kennel Council and OFA cert means there hips have been evaluated before having a litter.

Anywhere around the world, reputable breeders carry out health screenings of known genetic porblems this breed can have and do it before breeding a litter.

The terms you have mentioned is for America, in the UK if you get a pup from there you have to make sure that the breeder of a litter has had the mum and dad screened by the BVA for Hips, and also eye clearances done too. There should be certificates/documentation of clearances on both the sire and dam of a litter. Also that they are registered too with the British Kennel Council.

OES can suffer from Hip Dysplasia and Eye problems like PRA,Cataracts, entropian etc so breeders screen for these before breeding to help lessen these problems in the breed & hopefully ensure a healthy puppy free of these problems..

These are things to always check for and information on these should be freely available from a reputable breeder for you to view before aquiring a puppy from that breeder.

So whatever country you end up getting a pup from, make sure all the right steps by a breeder has been done before purchasing a pup.

Read through the forum there is lots of topics on this and also a wealth of information for you too and wonderful people here to help with any questions you may have.

GOOD LUCK and I hope it all goes well for you.
Excellent advice! Just wanted to say welcome to the forum, Jannette! Good luck with your search for a sheepdog.
Welcome :D

Hi Jannette, welcome to the forum and the world of the "Bobtail Obsessed".

You haven't said much (well actually anything) about your experience in this breed or why you want a Bobtail so I'll "conclude" you have researched the breed and are aware of their needs, potential health issues and their "upkeep and maintienance requirements" as well as the plethora of great joys they can bring into your life if they are "the breed for you". If you haven't done this in a deliberate and complete way please be sure to learn as much as you can about these dogs, their personalities etc., both here and at every other resource you can find, to help you decide if you and they are indeed a "match".

If you are unable to get a puppy form a breeder in SA your best bets are probably to import form either Australia or Britian (direct flights). However breeders in both countries are now prevented from docking their dogs so unless there is a puppy from an "older" litter that is something you will have to accept. We have a number of members from both countries and hopefully they will "jump in" and recommend reputable breeders and their experiences with these breeders. Canadian and American breeders are still able to dock tails so look there for a docked dog if that is your choice. In any of these choices though you will need to check into SA quarantine laws (if extant) and you need to understand that shipping the dogs will be both hard on the dog and potentially very expensive. In some cases, dependant on airline policies and "live cargo rates" it may be less expensive to fly to your pup and bring him/her home as "live checked baggage".

I hope you are able to find a puppy that you can bring into your home, be patient, it may ultimately be better to wait until your "local" breeders have more litters. Perhaps the one you cannot reach has or will soon have puppies but is away at shows or on other business. Give it a bit of time before giving up on them. I know how much easier it is to say than it actually is to await a puppy once you have decided that you and they are meant to be a couple, threesome, gang, whole pack.... It is always better to see and personally evaluate your potential breeder if at all possible rather than buy "sight unseen". IF you must go "out of country" you enter a much more "risky" transaction but you can minimize your risks by doing as thorough a search as possible, forum members will be more than willing to help.

Consider your options and "fire away" with questions, both regarding the dogs themselves and potential breeders. We are all ready to help and assist you in any way possible.

Thanks and Cheers

Carl
I had 2 sheepies and both of them crossed the rainbow a year apart from each other. I miss them a lot. I couldn't imagine living without them but now I have to and it hurts. Well, I have to save up some more money because I don't have enough at the moment. I found out that it is gonna cost a lot more. So my dream of having another sheepie to love will have to wait.
Sorry to hear that Jannette, hope your wish of getting another comes true soon for you.

Importing is expensive and I hope you will able to get in contact with the other breeder in SA or import another when you can.

Again best wishes for another OES to share your life and family.

Stick around in the meantime and get to know other OES lovers and maybe share with us your previous fur babies that shared your life. We would love to hear about them. :D
