Adopted a stray sheepdog!

:D Hello! Recently I had seen an Old Enlgish running around my neighborhood. I already have a beautiful sweet Border collie, and an adorably sweet husky. This Old English had recently decided that he REALLY likes my two dogs and was always around our yard hanging around on the outside of the fence, just because enjoyed them and their company. My observations of him over the past few weeks have shown to me that most of his hair is matted down in knots and dreads, and shows signs of abuse. My fiance and I have been setting out food for him, which he has thankfully eaten. Today he has decided that he likes us too! For the longest time he would run from us, but today he layed down and rolled right over for a belly rub! He even had no problem jumping into our yard and joining the family! We are so excited! He is so cute and we fully intend to clean him up, get him shaved down a little, and show him what real love and companionship is all about! If anyone has any advice for me, PLEASE share!! Thank you all!

Debra Jean,
Hope you can give him a good home. Couple of suggestions before you let him spend too much time with your dogs: have your vet check him out and scan him for an ID. If he has any diseases you dogs could catch them. Otherwise sounds like a basically good temperament.
Welcome and how great of you to offer this sheepdog a home.

George, gave some good advice though. On the off chance that he is somebody's missing pet an ID scan would confirm that. Also you would hate to expose your dogs to anything unneccesarily. Another reason to take him to the vet is to try to determine his age.

Good luck and keep us posted on his status.
What a wonderful event! Welcome to the forum! You'll find a ton of helpful information from wonderfull people!
How wonderful that he has found a guardian angel.
I have to agree with the others, have him scanned at the vet. I would also check back issues of you newspaper for a lost sheepie.
Appearances can be deceiving, a lost pet on it's own can go down hill very quickly.
Someone may have be searching for a beloved member of their family.
It sounds like he would make a wonderful addition to your family.
I hope all works out well.
I agree with the other posts. Find out if he is a lost pet before you get too attached. Call vets, spca, etc. When I got Miller, the gentleman who fed him placed an ad in the paper too, but after 3 weeks, we knew he was a stray. GOOD LUCK
Hi,

Have to pip up here and please don't be insulted by what I have to say. You sound like you have such a good heart and the kind of person that would make a wonderful home for any dog. However I have to agree with the rest about trying to find the owner. A matted dirty dog doesn't mean abuse. Please hear my story.

Last year, my son left the back gate unlatched. All three of my dogs are indoor dogs but have access to the backyard for toileting. Two of my Sheepdogs got out and hung around my place for 2 hrs according to the story I was able to piece together after knocking on over 60 doors when I returned home from work and discovered one was missing. One dog did go back in the gate, leaned against it and locked the other one out.

A new neighbor had moved in that weekend and held a huge Indian festival and had over 8 bags of garbage/leftovers that both my two enjoyed very much. So much the one with the weaker stomach vomited a few times.

Ironicially the night before he was bathed and I attempted to groom him..first time as he normally goes to a pro. After realizing I was not doing too well..I decided to stop and call a groomer the next day. I had removed his collar when he had his bath.

All horrible circumstances..first time son left gate unlatched, first time Merlin was without his collar, first time I gave him bad groom job, first time eating garbage which made him sick.

A mere half an hour before I returned home a well meaning lady found him and assumed due to his bad condition he was an abused unkept unloved dog.

I knew immediately he was missing when I returned home from work and slipped my key in the lock. Without fail for three years my boy would stick his big nose out the cat door to greet me and didn't do it that day. I raced in the house..knew right away something was wrong, drove to the SPCA to report him missing, I called the microchip company, I went to the dog park and hung up a poster I made as well as the local pet food store. I called all vets in the area and then knocked on doors from 4pm until 10 pm at night.

I was heartbroken and devestated thinking that whoever had him had decided to keep him as a trip to a vet or SPCA would have given them the info he was being searched for.

At 10 pm I stopped my search as it was now dark and I spent the night looking out the window crying as I knew my boy was out there "somewhere".

We were reunited the next day not because the woman tried to find me but because everywhere she went..dog park, pet store..ect..people said he was being searched for. She didn't want to call me as she was convinced I was a terrible bad owner that let my dog get in a bad state.

When I saw Merlin I could see why she thought that..he was so dirty, he was still vomiting from eating the garbage and of course had his very bad half cut hair (OES's will matt easily if the hair gets wet).

So Please I know you mean well but before you keep him please have him scanned or place an ad (it's usually free all over North America if you find something, for an ad in the Found section of the newspaper.

Then when you've done all of that...then I wish you all the best in giving him a forever home . Just be sure that he is not someone's beloved pet who is heartbroken because he's missing.

Thanks for listening.

Marianne
