Foster pup has Coccidia

I got a new foster today, he is 4 months old and he has Coccidia. I saw him yesterday and he was playing with his brother in the cage- but today he is a bit lethargic. His stool was tested positive for Coccidia- I've only had him for an hour, so I haven't seen any diarrhea yet.

My question is how long is it contagious for? I want to bring him to our boarding facility this weekend, but I can only do that after I am certain he is 100% not contagious. He started Albon today. Anyone know?

Heather,

I am so sorry to hear about your new foster pup.

I found this on the web that gives information on what precautions, and things you can do to minimize the spread of it. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm ... icleid=727

From everything I have read online it's my opinion that the dog will need to be on antibiotics for about 3 wks and apparently it is 3-4 wks to get rid of it.
Thanks Wynnette. That's a little longer than I hoped! The poor little guy has a very bloated belly too- does anyone know if that is typically associated with Coccidia or if that could be something else?

I read on one site(that I can't find now) that they are only contagious for 3 days after they start antibiotics- does anyone know if that is true?
I'm so sorry! It's a nasty little thing, isn't it? I wish I knew more about it.

I guess I'd be concerned about worms too because they can cause a pot belly appearance. I imagine the vet would have already checked for this though. :? Did the vet seem concerned with his bloated belly?

"Roundworms are active in the intestines of puppies, often causing a pot-bellied appearance and poor growth. "

I was worried about worms- but they did a fecal test so I'm assuming they would have caught it? I don't get to talk to the vets at the shelter, it's usually 2nd or 3rd hand by the time it gets to me. He had diarrhea late last night and there were no worms and his stomach seemed to have gone down quite a bit!
Rufus just had a nice solid poop (outside too!)
That is fantastic news for Rufus!
Yay for Rufus!
It's amazing how a bunch of people
can get so excited about poop! :D
I think that they are contageous with cocidea for about a week but you should keep them separate for the 10 days you are administering albon just to be safe......
When we rescued Keira, she also had Coccidia. I think its fairly common. I honestly don't remember it going on very long after she started meds.

Yes, her little was swollen at first. Pirate never caught it, thankfully, and she was cured fairly quickly.
