Can a dog become "unhouse broke "?!

Crazzzyyy Question :)

As you know-- Max has been doing very well in his recovery. He has many milestones and we are thrilled. However..
it seems that we are always cleaning up a few "presents". He is going for walks with his rear end leash several times a day- and typically goes then. But - we get back in the house- he gets settled- and he goes. And it is always in the same place in the mud room. I have cleaned and cleaned the area to remove any smell that may prompt him to potty.

He continues to wear a pee pad- the steroids increase urination- so I am not so concerned about that.

Most likely he just doesn't have total control of his functions yet. I am going to talk to the Vet Thursday- but - thought I would throw it out here and see what the experts think.

I don't think he's un-housetrained but it could be that he's looking for the easiest route when he has to go now. Or, like you said, even the medication.
Poor Max. I have a feeling it has more to do with the meds than anything else. Oscar also takes steroids (for IBD). He's on a very low dose, twice a week, but there are times throughout the day where he pees every hour - and he can barely make it out the door! 8O
It's the drug he is on at the moment, it will settle once he is off it. Had the same problem with my girl when she was on it, had to monitor the water intake as well as made her drink huge amounts.

She had trouble holding her pee, but was back to normal when we stopped using the drug.

Max is doing fine, so don't worry about the accidents in the pee department that will settle down once he is off the drug.
As far as to poo problem....I wonder if he just cant quite "balance" long enough yet to...uh...get the whole job done? :(
Max has made such great strides in his recovery, hopefully this is just a very temporary problem! :?
Ooops poo department, that is just a weakness there and he is probably not emptying out completely because of the weakness in the muscles and backend. When when he is lying down and relaxed or even making the effort to stand up again there is a little bit of a loss of control there. Normal too for the circumstances he has been through.

I am sure that will get a lot better as his muscles and back end strengthens as he progresses.
Poor baby I am sure it is not what he wants to do, but with the weakness in his back legs it may be the only comfortable way to go. And when you gotta go...you gotta go.

Yes- when ya gotta go- you gotta go!! All of the responses were right on- Vet says that we shouldn't even be worrying about it at this point. Weak legs- dulled sensation in the hind quarters- not able to take the stance and "get the job completely done" - all contribute to the lack of control right now. When he wasn't on steroids he was doing better in the pee dept and really trying to hold it. I must have just had a moment yesterday---
John has been out of town- and with taking total control of Max's care this week- I notice how much he "goes" :o

Thanks for the voice of reason- he has come so far- this is a small matter!
