I am Furious

I was shopping at Walmart tonite and saw some nice smoked hambones that the dogs would LOVE. So I bought two, one for each boy. I came home and gave them to very happy boys. I was in the dining area where you can see right into the living room and I hear crunch crunch and a few growls if Simon gets to close to Taylors bone. About forty minutes passes and Simon walks into the dining room with something small in his mouth. I take it away to find out its a small piece of bone. I throw that out and go looking for the rest of the bone. I can't find it. I am looking everywhere, under everything, check the rest of the house even though I know he never left the living room. A few minutes later Simon is chewing again and I take it away and find its a SLIVER of the bone. How the heck did this dog devour a hambone in forty minutes. And since I found slivers, does he now have slivers in his stomach? Ready to puncture his intestines and get stuck on the way through. I'm not mad at the dog, he was doing what dogs do but I am mad at Hartz who made the bone. Granted I was not watching the dog but was listening to the crunching that he was making but thought it was just a dog chewing on a bone. These are supposed to be long lasting, it says so on the package. Now I have to watch Simon for problems like getting a tummy ache and not eating and throwing up and so many other things. There should be a warning that these darn things could splinter. OHHHH I AM SOOOO MAD!!!

I hope Simon is OK. I would be upset too.
Perhaps you should contact the company too?
OH NO!
I hope Simon is okay!
I only give raw bones to my dogs. Much safer.
I'm sorry!!!

I agree with the above. Raw bones are much softer and easily digestible. When bones are cooked they can splinter very easily and the opportunity to hurt something inside is increased.

Of course, as with all things, there is no permanent answer because weight-bearing raw bones (for instance a leg bone), while less likely to splinter, can also be hard enough to crack a tooth! 8O
I hope all goes well. :(
I hope Simon is okay. Please keep us posted.
You want to keep his stool a bit on the juicy side  sorry. Extra broth for his food, even sprinkle a lttle (< teaspoon,) Metamucil type produce on his food, make his water extra special (whitewater or broth water...a little flavoring so he laps up a bit more to swell the Metamucil)

Hopefully the added bulk and moisture will drag out what's inside.
Did you call the Vet for advice?
sending  and best wishes for Simon,
Hope Simon is OK. Next time try real beef marrow bones. My guys love them and they hold up very well. They usually get tired of them before the wear them out. And then I put a bit of peanut butter in them and they are good for another day or two.
I hope simon is going to be OK, I just only ever feed raw marrow or brisket bones for them to munch on. Never buy anything that is unnatural or cooked for them to chew on. So many stories about the greenies, dried pigs ears and raw hide chews, people thought wow, good for there teeth and so many reports of disaster there.

We have things like Smoked Ham hock bones and beef bones here etc and they do splinter as they are sort of cooked. I avoid them too, just to dangerous for big fangs to crunch into as the bones are brittle then and they do splinter into pieces.

George like the idea of stuffing the marrow bone for them, must try that one, mine never crunch through a complete big raw marrow bone, so that is a great idea for a few extra days of YUM.
I understand exactly how you feel!!! I bought those stupid bones once too and same thing happened.

Hope your boy is doing well and hugs to you for the scare.

Marianne
Thanks to all for the well wishes and advice. So far, so good. No distress signs from Simon. As I said above I bought 2 and the second one that Taylor was chewing on is still good to go...out to the garbage....Pam
