Hi

Does any one out there know how to get our 10 month old Chocolate Lab to sleep through the night. I know at that age she can hold it, but always barks at around 4am to be taken downstairs to be let out. Any training tips? I let her out just before bed, and no water after 8pm. She is also a pop eater.
Any help on either or both problems would be helpful.
FYI she was a problem barker, but the citrinella spray collar is working great.

Thanks,

Tired
The only advice that seems to work is to ignore the behavior. If she whimpers, cries, etc., don't even look at her or scold her. Just pretend she's not there. You might have a few transition nights, but eventually she will understand not to bother you until you get up for the mornign. Just make sure that she does in fact go to the bathroom when you let her out at night, and she should definitely be able to hold it all night .

Regarding poop eating. Sprinkle Adolf's Meat Tenderizer (one with MSG) into her food. That will make her poop unappetizing. It should only take a few weeks before this behavior is corrected so she won't have to be on it long.
My dogs have never followed the "time line" they were supposed to as far as potty training. At that age they should be able to hold it but they don't always like to. So, with mine if they barked in the middle of the night I would always take them out and then go right back to bed. It is not a time to play or give attention. However, FOR ME letting them follow there instinct has paid off in the long run. My one girl has now held it for 24 hrs. with out any problems. (Miscommunication with the family). We would never intentionally ask them to hold it like that. However, now if she needs to go out she will bark a certain bark and we know and out she goes.

Your dog is still relatively young and with encouragement she will make a great dog!! It is a time for patience.

Good Luck1
