Daisy update

Daisy had her ultrasound, 2 liver aspirations, a urinalysis, and bloodwork for leptospirosis titers. The ultrasound showed chronic liver inflammation
and areas that could be liver regeneration or cancer. We won't know any results for 5-7 days, if these tests are inconclusive then a surgical biopsy will be done. The choices of what this could be are: chronic active hepatits, bacterial infection of the liver, leptospirosis, or neoplasia. In the meantime she has to be on a bland diet of boiled chicken and hamburger along with rice and cottage cheese. The problem is she refuses to eat rice or cottage cheese, ate the hamburger once and the chicken twice in small amounts. I made new chicken cooked in apple juice with chopped apple and sweet potato, she won't touch it. I made some liver, she ate a tiny bite and a spoonful of yogurt. Any ideas on something else I could try?

Keeping you and Daisy in our thoughts and prayers-
please update us Holly when you can.

:ghug: :ghug:
I'm hoping for the best! I just don't know which of those options is the best. Poor Daisy must be feeling crummy. When I make rice with ground beef or turkey, I make the rice really watery and I completely mix in the meat so they can't pick the meat without also getting some rice.
I have no idea on the food, but wanted to send my prayers and hugs to Daisy. :ghug:
Oh, Holly.

Hugs to you and belly rubs (very gentle ones) to Daisy.

When were the tests? If she was just sedated yesterday, she may not be back to herself, as yet.

Is she on any meds? I'm just thinking that is she is not feeling well she may have an appetite, but if there are meds that are kicking in soon that may change in a bit. If not, can you give ehr something to settle her tummy? (At your vet's recomendation, of cource).

Are you giving it to her blended? Or mixed together? Maybe she would lick it up if it was all in a soft form. Would you be able to add some fish to it? (Unsalted of course) just to get her interested? Fish smells strong, and dogs normally go for the smelly stuff.

One more thing....there is nothing like some competetion to get a dog to devoir there food. If one of her siblings were to stand next to her maybe natural instacts would kick in and she may eat it before they do?

Poor baby.
I hope things improve for Daisy soon.

I think you could also try eggs for her too to see if she will eat them. Just boil vs. fry.
:ghug:

belly rubs for Daisy
Aww poor Daisy! Big hugs for her :ghug:
Good luck Daisy :D
Hi,

My heart goes out to Daisy and I know as her mom you are doing all the right things. I'm sorry can't suggest anything regarding food as my three eat everything in sight, but wanted you to know you're in my thoughts.

Thinking of Daisy and sending lots of love her way. :hearts:
Poor baby- she is in our prayers.

When Max was really feeling bad after surgery- the only thing he would eat was ground turkey mixed with plain yogart. We spoon fed him and that seemed to give him more desire to eat. I would lay down and rub his tummy and talk to him while he ate.

No real sage advise here- just hoping the best for Daisy and her family.

:ghug:

Poor Daisy. I'm so sorry to hear that the possible diagnoses weren't the easier ones that I hoped for. Daisy not eating is certainly something that you haven't encountered before, is it? Does she have a "favorite" food that you can use to get her interested?

Lots of hugs from all of us but especially Clyde. :)
Oh - it is hard when you can't get your baby to eat. Have you tried cooking the meat with a bit of garlic? I know a lot of dogs enjoy this taste.
Sorry that your baby would eat. A solution I tried with the cat, but have never done with a dog id baby food. Some turkey or one of the other meats. It is soft and easy to digest. Good luck
I'm so sorry you and Daisy are going through this.
I would have suggested a stinky canned food but with the recalls, I wouldn't do that now... I'm not sure what else to try if the vet wants a bland diet....
Hugs daisy, we are thinking of you.

Try a can of Sardines with some Pasta.

Add Missing Link too, so you know then she is getting everything she needs at the moment while she is not eating much.

Make a meat loaf out of minced chicken/Lamb, brown rice, rolled soaked oats, and finely chopped vegies through it, like sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot, and celery, green beans, spinach.

Then just let cool and slice into portions and refrigerate or freeze portions till needed.
I don't have any advice- but wanted to let you know that we hope that you and Daisy will be okay~

Oh, Holly, I'm so sad to hear this discouraging news about Daisy.

Big hugs to both of you :ghug: and I'll be sure to keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.
Holly,
When I cook rice for the dogs I always put in a chicken boullion cube or two. It always seems to get them more interested in eating it.
You and Daisy will be in my prayers.
Best wishes to both of you.
The problem is that she has to be on such a bland diet, low protein and very little fat. I got some chicken baby food and she ate the whole (2.5 ozs) jar. Since tapioca flour is very easy to digest I'll play around with that, add a jar of the baby food, some cottage cheese or tofu and bake it into a treat. Yesterday she seemed a little better, today not so good :( . I just want the results back

Thanks Jaci and everyone for all the great suggestions!
Oh, the poor baby.

How about mixing the ground meat....whichever with rice...into balls and dropping them into boiling stock & water. Bland porcupine balls. Allow the balls to cool in some of the stock to which you've added a jar of the baby food = gravy.

I know how frustrating this is.......just keep trying.
I did this response a few minutes ago, but the computer did something weird. So I am sorry if this turns out to be a repeat.

I am so glad the baby food worked for you. It is go that she was willing to eat it on her own. The last time I had to do it, I had to put it on the cat's tongue with my finger tip.

It is hard to have you furry sick expecialy if they won't eat. Good luck
Finally got all the test results back-negative for everything. Next week we have to get a liver biopsy, now the specialist thinks it may be an autoimmune problem. We've had Daisy on and off two different antibiotics, now they say there is no infection. She still won't eat much, I have tried every low protein, low fat food on the market plus have made all kinds of things for her. The boys love it because they get all the chicken, ground sirloin, etc., that she won't touch :) . We've been giving her Iams treats and a little dehydrated chicken when she'll eat it, not the best thing but she has to eat something. Some good news, her liver has started to regenerate itself to a small degree, whatever is happening has been going on for quite awhile with no symptoms until now.
I keep thinking about you both and was looking for info on elevated liver enzymes today when I came across a diet by Dr. Jean Dodds DVM. I DO NOT know if it would be appropriate for Daisy so you should check with your vet. There are two different versions of a liver cleansing diet... I guess I was wondering if the sweet potato one would encourage her to eat.

Has the vet mentioned anything about S-adenosylmethionine (SaMe) or milk thistle? Maybe these aren't for more serious liver conditions. I don't have much experience with this condition but Meesha was on SaMe last year for elevated liver enzymes caused by a drug she was taking.

Thanks for posting an update!
Hugs to you both.
Glad to hear all the test have come back negative and that her liver has started to regenerate. :cheer:

Keeping you and Daisy in my thoughts.
Keeping you and daisy in our thoughts, good to hear all the tests came back negative :ghug:
Holly, I had a failing liver myself . I felt terrible all the time. I found out when I moved to Tn. I went to a Vanderbilt walk in clinic and they ran some blood works. They could not believe how bad my liver was.
They also found that I was a diabetic. My sugar reading came back over 500.
They sent me to a specialist and he believed my liver was so bad due to the diabetes that I did not know I had. He wanted me to see him in 2 weeks after being on diabetic med's and see what my liver look like.

2 weeks later my liver test came back a little better.
He said it was due to the high sugar levels in my body. I had what he call a fatty liver .Now just over 1 year later my liver is normal . I also took 'Milk thistle ' I love it !

Could it be possible Daisy has diabetes or her sugar goes up just enough to make her sick but not enough for the blood works to show diabetes?

I don't know if it is possible and I don't want to sound stupid but I thought I would just put it out there for a thought .

Big hug for daisy! :ghug:

Antoinette
Good suggestion Jaci regarding sweet potatoe and the recipe Lisa listed sounded as if it's worth a try as well.

Thinking of Daisy and sending positive vibes her way.

Just wanted to let you know we are thinking about you, and hoping for the best for Daisie. :ghug:

The verdict is in-chronic active hepatitis :( The treatment is prednisone daily, the good news is she doesn't need a liver biopsy yet and can go back to her regular diet :) Hopefully the steroids will kick in soon as she looks almost totally yellow from jaundice and has very low energy levels.

 She wants fatty fatty fat pants to know she weighs 102 now, less then he does 8O

And a big THANKS from Daisy and I for all the well wishes!
Did they say anything about making her diet as fat free as possible for a while, at least?

Or maybe I'm confusing it with something else.
Well that is unexpected! Is it something she will recover from? Does it go away or will you need to always manage it? Sounds like maybe this is good news of a sort, relative to other possibilities. Is that right? I'm not sure what to think.

Clyde says that now that she's on her steroids, she should start bulking up to her fighting weight again soon, though.

I'm glad to hear that this is should be manageable. Of all the possibilities, this sounds like relatively good news.
It must be good that at least you know what you are dealing with now. Hopefully your Daisy will start to feel a bit better soon and can go back to her usual food. She'll miss all the special treats! My Daisy really adores fish which I give her in addition to her normal food sometimes as a treat.

Keep up the good work, she's lucky to have you as her Mum!

Karen and Daisy
Val, I'm not sure what to think either. The original "specialist" had ruled out hepatitis which is why we went to the internist. He knew what it was from her bloodwork, , most notably the bilirubin count. Yesterday morning we noticed she was really yellow all over, when the vet called with new bloodwork results he said it was because her bilirubin count had doubled since last Friday. The only test we're waiting for now is for bartonella, a bacteria that is associated with this type of hepatits.

As of now she isn't on a fat or protein restricted diet but that may change as new bloodwork is done every few weeks. We also don't need the liver biopsy yet, he wants to hold off until we see how she responds to the prednisone. At this point it seems fairly manageable as the ultrasound showed areas of liver regeneration, the very same areas the first "specialist" said were probably cancer. I think half the battle is finding someone competent right from the start.
Daisy is so lucky to have such a caring and on the ball Mom! Prayers and good energy to you making a full recovery Daisy. And if the steroids put some weight on you there will just be more to love.:ghug:
How is Daisy coming along? Is she still as yellow or is that starting to improve now? She is always in our thoughts.
She seems to be doing better, thanks. Of course now she's so spoiled that she thinks she's the queen  . Some days are better than others but it will take time.
Poor Daisy--I had no idea! I'm sorry she's sick, but I'm glad that it seems like you are finding out how to treat it. Slurps from Barney...
