Doesn't want to get in the car

Any ideas on getting my 5 month interested in going on rides w/ me in the car? I would like to take her trail walking but the times we've been I have to bodily lift her into the car. She is 50lbs + and before long this won't be an option. She is 5 months old. I have seen others open the hatch, pat the back floor, and in goes their large dog. Want her to see the world w/ me!

Sounds like fun! The back hatch might be too high for her to jump. Have you tried the rear car door? How about sitting inside the car with treats to entice her to come in and join you? You might even just sit in there for a while with her the first few times so she can explore and get used to it. Good luck!
Some dogs will never jump in a car. Until we got a lower vehicle, Clyde (who is 2 and 100 pounds) would have to be hoisted from the back to get him in. He'd just stand there all day with half his body in and back feet on the ground.
and yes, I had to hoist her into the car. I put her in the backseat. I have a Yukon so I think the back would probably be too high. The backseat may be too. When we got home, I had to get her out, physically. I will try the treat idea. On a day when we have nothing to do, I will sit in the backseat and try to get her to hop in.
Thanks for the comments!!!!!
Vet check-Super Healthy! :D
Hi :D ,

Dutchess turned 6 months on the 2nd and finally she just started jumping into the car on her own, thank goodness she is a wee sheepie
I have a SUV and when we get a new foster dog that is not used to riding in a vehicle I will have my hubby get inside the vehicle. I will take the dog with a 6 ft leash and lift the hatch in the back and then hand the leash to my husband who also has the treats. Once the dog has hopped in the SUV on their own I will take them somewhere whether it is Petsmart or a park for a quick walk. The dog will then start to get the idea if I jump in the back of the car we may be going somewhere fun.

A friend of mine had a problem like you are describing with her dog. Turns out the only time the dog got in the car was to go to the vet so the dog associated the car with going to someone maybe not so pleasant.

Now if I lift my hatch on my vehicle all 3 of mine and my foster will jump directly in - no coaxing needing. After all we may be going to the dog park and noone wants to be left behind for that fun.
Can you "borrow" one of her older friends to show her how to get in? I love how my older dogs show the younger ones the ropes - well, most of the time.

We have the opposite problem with Bailey. She wants to be the first one in, so you'd better not get in her way. 8O Then she yells at the others to hurry up. We've had to "demote" her to the last in for everyone's sake.
Wyn (Baton Rouge Sheepies) had a great suggestion if you have someone to assist you. I like the other ideas too.

I found with all my three that enticing them in the vehicle with a treat was probably the easiest method. Open back door, throw treat in..leave door open. Lots of praise and good boy or girl!! You may also climb in too to make it more enticing and call them from within.

I would repeat this several times and eventually just drive to the end of the block and back. Eventually round the block and then perhaps a longer trip. You can also wean out the treats too eventually.

Most people don't often attempt to have their dogs in vehicles until it's vet time and the dogs may start to associate the car with vet. It's always a good idea to start them off viewing the car as a good thing with fun trips and slow desensitization to it.

Sounds as a trip to a park is just the right thing!

There are also pet ramps available for larger vehicles but I find them a tad expensive at 200 although am saving my pennies to purchase one someday. That's if my old van last that long..lol!

Good luck and keep us posted!

I have always had the opposite problem. If I put on a pair of shoes Chauncey is waiting at the door. I'm sure he thinks the car is titled in his name :D He's crushed if I'm going in the truck because it's too high for him to jump into. I can barely climb in myself so taking him isn't an option.
Car rides so far we have taken have been two for long hikes on a leash, the 3 hour drive when I brought her home, and 2 to the vet. I can tell she can sense the vet vibe, probably from me. I also had to take the 15 year old Chi with us, in a pet cab, and he whined all the way! Didn't help matters at all. Next vet trip is June 1 for the dreaded spay. So worried about bladder control, her being okay, yada yada yada. I plan on several more hikes w/ a poodle/shih tsu and my little girl has pee wee soccer 2 days a week and I want to bring her along. She LOVES kids! That bottom doesn't stop wigglin'! Love the treats idea and she is going to be 6 months in a month. Thanks for all the great info.
So much help! Thanks!
