Practical advice to safe-guard against parvo?

Okay, I know I'm bugging everybody with lots of questions now, but I'm so excited about getting a puppy in a few months, and I want to be really prepared. I'll calm down soon, I promise! But I've heard such horror stories regarding Parvo. Just what should the limitations be regarding this virus? I'd like to take her out (definitely not a dog park until she's older), but what/where would the limitations be - like are public streets too dangerous until she builds up antibodies? What have other puppy owners done in the past? What about puppy classes - do you think they are a safe environment? I've only adopted middle-age, or very old dogs, so I have no point of reference. What about socialization? I know this is a lot of questions, sorry......

First, welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new puppy!

It is always recommended NOT to take a puppy out on the streets until he/she has all her shots. Usually around 12 - 14 weeks. Walk him/her on a leash in your backyard for potty and alittle play time but keep him/her close to the house. And of course, if there are other dogs using your yard for potty, keep puppy away from them and their feces...

For socialization, before shots are completed, take the puppy for rides in the car and show puppy the outside world from the car window...They can still see the outside world. I used to sit on my front porch with my new pup so he could see the cars go by and hear the sounds but still not be "walking the streets"...

Most puppy classes will not take you until shots are complete.

Parvo isn't the only thing to worry about...little unprotected puppies can pick up parasites, etc from other dogs and/or there feces...
Thanks for your advice - I'm going to do my best to keep her protected. We have a nice big garden that she can explore until she's big enough to go out in public. We can't wait! She's not even born yet, and we already love her so much!! :)
I recommend similar advice. Try not to take your puppies out of your yard or house until they are fully vaccinated. Vets have told me not to take my puppies anywhere until they are 4 months old. Things are just too risky!

Also, I made the mistake of buying my puppies without worrying about the breeder or papers or health information. Please go into buying the puppy with lots of education. Make sure to ask the breeder to see health records for both the parents. Make sure both parents have records that they do not have hip dysplasia (I'm not positive is OES dogs have this but I know you could always check into it). Also, CERF papers to make sure the parents do not have eye problems (cataracts) should be checked for.

I just went through some of these issues and wished I had thought about these things before I just bought the puppy.

Good luck!!
