In Memorium: Elwood

We lost our "old man" today. The vet said kidney infection and renal failure. (No, we didn't use any of that rat poison laden dog food) He was just old.

We found Elwood about three years ago running loose in a pasture. My wife stopped and opened the door of the car and he jumped in. He smelled awful. Not skunk or wet dog, but dead, necrotic tissue. It turned out that he had multiple bite wounds which had gotten maggots, and he was severely malnourished. The vet guessed he had tangled with coyotes (plural) and had probably been on his own for a couple of weeks.

We named him Elwood after Elwood P. Dowd in Harvey. The pasture we found him in was by the state mental institution. 'nuff said.

We took him home and nursed him back to health. Three months in the utility room pretty well did the trick. He probably wasn't really a sheep dog, at least, not purebred. His coat wasn't right, and his nose was more boxy, like a St. Bernard or Pyranees. But he was a sweet dog, and had obviously been spoiled. He used to bark if you didn't put a treat on top of his food.

Elwood was kind of the fifth wheel, and at the bottom of the totem pole in our dog herd. But we hope we saved him from an early death and made his "golden" years a little happier. Godspeed.

Aw, Ken. I'm sorry for the loss of Elwood :( He was fortunate to have found you after what sounds like an awful journey on his own. Full OES or not, he sure was a cutie pie. I love this picture of him with his big Grover nose :D

:ghug: Oh Ken, your post brought tears to my eyes  As as I 'm so fond of telling people, I'm not the sappy sort. Elwood was so lucky to have spent his final years with you and your family surrounded by love and family. I have always had this mental image of your household (from the start of your posting) full of dogs kids noise and fun! Elwood was truly blessed to call you home.
I'm sorry for your loss of Elwood. I Love the fact that he used to bark if you left out his treat! How neat is that, and a fine memory to make you smile!

Thank you for taking in this guy, and take comfort in knowing that others are thinking of you and your family...and Jake showing him around at the pearly gates.

I'm sorry for your loss, Ken. There is always such a void afterwards, even if they had a FABULOUS life.
Ken, I am so sorry to hear of Elwood's passing. He may have been on the bottom of the totem pole within the sheepie ranks but I know he was at the top in your hearts. He was one of the lucky ones that found and ended life with a great family. :ghug:
Sorry for your loss....

Hi,

I'm so sorry for the loss of Elwood. How lucky he was to have found his forever home with you. It was perhaps meant to be, as when he met your family he decided that's where he wanted to be the rest of his days. What a special boy he was and I know you are grieving for him. Take solace that you gave him what every dog dreams of ..a wonderful home with lots of love.
