new member of the family

hi, it's laurie's daughter christine. there is a new member to the family after the death of my hamster here at school. our fingers are crossed that the dogs will get along with her. bella doesn't seem to mind her too much, a few sniffs and then she loses interest. emmie on the other hand seems a little too excited to want to see whats in the new cage!

my sister and i surprised everyone and went to home depot to make ourselves a cage. it came out a lot better than i think anyone expected! hopefully soon she can get a sister and not be loney in her cage. also, if anyone has any advice about small animal and sheepdog interactions... my mom seems to really want everyone to get along! and now, here's bailey (and she still a baby, so she'll be getting bigger, probably double what she is now)

Very adorable! Great job building you own caage too! Very industrious! Hope you have many great years with Bailey. I don't know how to get dogs and hamsters to get along, but I'm sure you guys will think of something! :D
Great job with the cage!
Bailey looks like a sweet little baby. :)

Sorry, I have no advice about dogs and small furry animals. :?
shes a guinea pig and not a hamster so at least she'll be a bit beefier. i had a dwarf hamster before and there was no way i'd let mom let allow the dogs near him (even though she found it funny the few times he was running in his ball and the dogs were chasing him, even though i was frozen with fear he'd get knocked into the wall) i'm thinking she'll be maybe 2lbs...
Very cute!

Maybe you could teach her to ride the sheepies...and of course take pictures of that... :D
Your Bailey guinea pig is a cutie. I love her color. :D
Good job on her cage building too. Are you going to make one for her outside in the grass too? They love it!
Very cute. Way back when, my first OES, whose good weight was 100 lbs was a little intimidated by our hamsters. Merlin was a great dog, but Mr. Brave In The Face of Small Animals, he was not.

I don't have any experience with guinea pigs, but my instinct tells me Bailey would be safer if not too exposed to OES.
With our guniea pigs, we introduced them slowly to Remy (OES), and the cats.

Eventually I just had to take a chance, and under supervision took the barrier down. Once they all got a good smell, everything was fine.

The pigs were too big for the cats to kill and eat...so they just left it alone.

Remy really didn't care...she would lay around and let the pigs do their thing, never onced worried she might harm one.

However, Tag as a puppy, did kill one of the pigs while outside...the pig escaped from the outdoor pen...and that was the end of her.

However, with Zoe the Bichon, she was curious but never had the intention of harm, so Tansy got free reign in the backyard. We gave her the lid of the cage, left it open, covered it with a tarp to protect from rain and heat, gave her hay for bedding and left her outside for the summer. I got a break from cage cleaning, our grass got fertilizer...LOL, and she was much much happier to have the freedom to foreage (sp). Still had to provide her with pellets and veggies, and water of course...not maintence free, and she still got attention, so as not to become skittish.

What an adorable piggie. She would love to have a sister - they're very social.

Check out this site for cavy resources. They have excellent information on cavy habitats, toys, hay, floor time etc. They also have excellent instructions for making multi-level cages big enough for multiple cavies from cheap and easy to find materials.

thank you for all of the advice!! it's safe to post now because i believe my mom is at work... but my sister and i are actually going out to get her a sister today!! i'll post a link of the new pictures this evening, then our family will be complete :)
What? Safe to post..... you are going where?
Busted! I don't start work until 5 today!
It's the family drama network of OES.org
Ha ha ha...busted!
To top it off I woke up this morning to find a e-mail that said I hijacked your name and changed your password so that she could post pictures. I'm afraid to ask....what's next Christine? Oh, I almost forgot. Another piggy
daughter response: at least i'm 30 miles away at school :) but you know she'll be happier with a sibling that doesn't want to eat her! you'll have the surprise of getting to see what she looks like when you get home. i need to start asking katie if you leave at 3 or 5pm, lesson learned :)
We had a hamster named Lucy together with our first two sheepdogs Bonney & Clyde. They got along famously.
Clyde would put his head up against the cage and slid down so the hair over his eyes would be pushed up and he could see better. Lucy and Clyde loved to play together, however, Lucy perferred to stay in her cage (a very large three story multi-level habitat).
Part of the game was when Lucy would crowd close to the cage bars and touch noses, Clyde would "snort" and Lucy would be 'blown' across the cage floor. Then she would come back and the whole game would start again.
Lucy loved to chew on Clyde's hair that stuck through the bars. Lucy would nibble at the hair and then take what she chewed off back to her nest to sleep on.
On evening (during a party wouldn't you know), Lucy escaped and we didn't notice her absence until the next morning. We looked high and low but Clyde found her hiding under the couch pillows. He kept going back to lay on the couch and 'snort'. After about an hour of this, Lucy crawled out from her hidy-hole and started to play the game with Clyde.

Once we took both sheepies AND Lucy on a camping trip to Big Sur in our VW bus...but that's another story for another day.
we got her sister!! katie decided on the name georgia. shes roughly the same age as bailey (3 months) and so far we only have 1 picture. now we just hope everyone can get along!!!
