I am planning on getting a lambluv OES puppy this summer and am concerned about having it in my apt There is a backyard and park next door and I am very active. I am on the third floor. The apt is about 1200 sq feet. I plan on using the dog when it gets older at childrens hospital where I work as an occupational therapist with kids. I am just concerned about the apt. as well as the barking when I leave. how long does that go on for??? |

| We have never had much trouble with barking when we leave.
I think it will really depend on the individual dog. Many dogs live in apartments. As long as you have a good, safe place for him to get exercise, I say go for it. |
| I agree with the above. BUT I do have a barker. Not while I'm gone, while I'm home!!! |
| I don't think living in an apartment is much of an issue with OES, other than housetraining might be difficult having to deal with 3 flights of stairs.
As far as barking, my first oes used to bark her head off when I left, and I think she did it for a long time. She wasn't quite right in the head though LOL None of my dogs that I have now bark when I leave, just when someone comes to the door. |
| Borrow a friend's puppy for a weekend. See how it goes when you are actually dealing with going down the three flights of stairs, trying to get somewhere quickly and so on.
I loaned my son our eldest dog for the week. It changed his mind on keeping a dog in an apt with his current schedule. The apt wasn't the issue. |
| There is an elevator right outside my door, so it really wouldnt be that bad. The house traning part would be bad but after that, I am sure the dog and I would get used to it. It is more the barking that I'm worried about. How long do they bark when I'm gone??? I just would love it so much and am so afraid of it being scared....should I get two??? |
| If you are worried about 1 sheepie barking - 2 would be much worse. 2 also will be rolling around and playing. A lot more noise with 2 rather than 1. I would talk to the neighbors and make sure they are ok. Explain that you will be getting a puppy and that the first few months there will be barking going on but you will be training him or her and in time it will decrease. I have found that as long as I kept my neighbors informed of what we were doing (bringing home a 2nd dog, then a 3rd dog and then all the fosters) that they were great about it with no complaints. But I did buy a house right next door to an older couple that wear hearing aids and can turn them off when the dogs get to loud. |
| We live in a 1400 sf 8plex, but we go to the off leash dog park that is about a mile down the road a lot and we go for walks when the temp is ok. Loki also has my 2 kids to give him excersize. When we leave, he hardly barks too long anymore. I think he stops by the time we get to the car. He is doing just fine, so I think you would be ok. |
| Can I ask where you all got your sheepies from? |

Have you discussed this with the breeder? They should be able to help you by choosing a puppy that is best suited to apartment life, and also to assist in support. There are things the breeder could do with your new puppy to get him/her ready for you, like starting crate-training in the early weeks so he/she learns that it is OK to be alone and crated for periods of time. |
| Everyone's answers are great. But I would just ask Jere about your concerns, since you are getting your pup from her kennel. Isn't she still in a downtown Chicago high rise with all her dogs? |
