Life Expectancy

I've been telling Emily (my wife - Mop Lover) that I've been thinking about this for a while. I was wondering how long your dogs have lived. I know that what the standard says and I have heard from the "experts," but I am curious to get the opinion of the real experts - you. Please respond with not just the age, but also maybe more info - like if the dog is from Out Back!

Thanks.

As with people, life expectancy depends on a multitude of factors. When I first got my sheepie I had "heard" that the average life of an OES was 10-12 years. But I have heard of MANY on this forum that have lived 14 or 16 years.

Tasker is 11 and still going strong, he acts and looks young. But he has been lucky, his only MAJOR health problems have been chronic ear infections. His joints seem to be a bit stiff but still very healthy. As a "senior" we do have routine Vet visits every six months and he has always gotten his shots, worming and heart worm protection. So like people much depends on preventative care.

I am hoping that Tasker will make it to 20
About 13 1/2 was my boys' age.
My parents' sheepdog is going to be 10 soon and she shows no signs of slowing down yet. She's had a bunch of UTIs, but other than that has been fairly healthy.
My parents Sheepdog lived to approx 12 yrs old. I am saying approx, because she was a rescue and they didn't know her exact Birthday.
They had her for 11 years.
Sheba our first OES was 8 when she left us because of a uterine infection and Dudley was 11 when he passed.
Our first sheepdog Prince lived to 12 year old.

He was a sweetheart and had cancer. Saying
goodbye to our lovable clown was the hardest
thing we had to face. He gave us 12 years of
devotion, laughter and love.
Buford, our first sheepie, was two months shy of his 16th birthday when he passed. Looking back on it, though, we should have made "THE" decision before we did. The quality of his life in those last 6 or so months was not the best for him but we were selfish - we didn't want to lose him. The decision was made for us when he could no longer stand on his own at all. We're hoping to be kind enough not to let Drez get to that point before we make that decision again.

Drez is 13-1/2, will be 14 in August if she makes it that long. Her hips are her main problem, plus her hearing is going. Otherwise, she's still a pup! She still wants to play, although the flesh is weak. She still eats like a horse. She's still curious about every little thing that goes on around her.

Wish us luck!
Norman was 12 1/2 when his time came. Just depends.
Chris, I didn't realize Drez was that old!!!

Maybe she and Tasker should get together and go to the Sr. Citizens meetings!! They could take bus trips and get free meals!!!!

I've heard a saying somewhere... though I can't for the life of me remember where...

3 years a puppy, 3 years a good dog, 3 years an old dog, everything else is a gift...

They can play bingo all day long :D
Hi,

Drezzie needs to get a red hat and purple dress and blue hair to go with the getup before her date with Tasker whom I refer as the Gary Grant of dogs. AWWWW I can just see it now...too cute!

Back to original question. Shaggy lived to 15 1/2.

She had been really ill at 8 years. I slept on the couch and carried her downstairs to the backyard every 2 hours in the daytime. The steroids had made her so bloated, thirsty and caused frequent urination and she was unable to walk down the stairs. The vet said. "you know if she had been heavier you wouldn't have been able to physically do this". She was a diminutive 47 pounds and I weigh a 100. Sadly if that happened to Panda or Merlin, my vet was right , would not have been able to physically do this with either of them as they weigh as much as I do.
I did this for 6 months with Shaggy until she recovered to the point where she was able to walk again. She then went on to live to 15 1/2.

Marianne and the boys
There was champas and unexpected long life of 18.

My first sheepie boy was 12, different line then the girls, peppa was 14 when we lost her, Kelsey is now 12 and starting to age.

There uncle just passed before christmas he was 15, There Gr.Ma was 16, few realies still going at 14 nearly 15.

I think anyone that gets a sheepie over 10+ is doing well.

I would hate to have giant breeds as there life expectancy is so much shorter.
Merlin was 2 months shy of his 14th birthday when he passed. No health problems until he was almost 12; he had an osteosarcoma removed--twice. We elected not to subject him to radiation at his age and he did not have any recurrences. His last year he had mobility problems due to some fused vertebrae. This contributed to his death.
Flash was 15, Beau was 8 and died from synovi sarcoma :(
Our first OES, Newman just made it past 13. He was a pet store dog probably from a puppy mill but he was spunky right up until his last month or 2. We had him on arthritis meds probably starting around age 11.
Our girl (Fergie) is 3 months shy of 14 but she has hip problems, and one eye is blind. We think she is failing but she still rallies around. It will be a sad, sad day when we lose our wonderful, faithful, lovable girl.
My Lucy was 15 when she passed at Thanksgiving. She was very healthy and then about almost 13 she went lame one day. We took her to the vet and had Xrays done---They said her back and legs had arthritis and HD on her right. She never showed signs of pain or anything else until that day. They put her on Rimadyl and it literally saved her life and she lived a happy 2 more years--- a bit slow in the last year with steps and getting up/down etc... but, overall, she was OK. The Rimadyl caused her liver enzymes to increase, but, it was sort of the lesser of 2 evils at that time.
We gave her tremendous care.
My first sheepdog lived to be 14 and a half with absolutely NO health problems...until about 12 when he statrted getting old...walking slower, seemed confused at times, legs getting weak. I had to send him to rest at 14 and a half...

I might add...he was on the lean side. He was a therapy dog and a CD titled obedience competitor. He was absolutely the love of my life....
Pearl is 15 years old...slowing a bit....sight and hearing are diminishing...but,,, there are still times that she gets that silly grin on her face and begins to buck like a bronco~~~

I think it is her way of telling me.....

""""HEY MOM!!! THERE IS STILL LIFE IN THIS OLD GIRL~~~~~~~"""""

:clappurple: :clappurple:
Not long enough. I guarantee that will be every sheepie's life expectancy. :(
