FOOD DANGER

Quote:

Zak and Stella have had horrible stomach problems over the last few weeks.. terrible constant gas, diarrhea and both lethargic and drinking lots of water... I immediately stopped the can food, without thinking about the recall and after a week they are much better, now I read that the food I was giving to them is one of the recalled brands.
Luckily I only mixed small portions with their kibble. I hate to think of what could have happened if I gave them more.
I have the feeling this is only the tip of the iceberg with dog food. I'm really concerned about this.

Not sure if this has been posted yet but here are the recalled brands:

Yikes! What a close call! I am so glad they are doing better.

Yes, the recall list was posted previously.

It is very frightening.
Have you brought them to the vet also?

It does seem that they've gotten better since they stopped eating the canned food, but it might be good for the vet to run some tests to see if there is any lasting damage, or any current illness they're not showing symptoms of.

A report to the food company would also be a good idea.

So glad to hear your kids are going to be okay. This is a really scary situation, and it seems there are far more cases than what is being reported.
I only read this list now..I'll call my vet today.
I hope everyone is taking this recall very seriously. Maybe it's more shocking when it hits so close to home. One of our vets, Dave Burke, talked about one of his patients in a front page story in today's newspaper... the kitty has a 50/50 chaince of survival. Another dog in the area may have also died from this. http://www.record-eagle.com/2007/mar/21petfood.htm

And be sure you check the list for updates. Last I saw, it has grown to 53 dog food brands (it started at 46 on Saturday morning) and 37 cat food brands (it started at 37). Remember, they say that it only affects specific dates and varieties... NOT all foods offered by these companies.

I'm throwing out all wet food 'til this situation passes. It's just not worth any risk to me.

Please contact your vet today. I'd ask that blood work be done on both dogs to be certain they are okay and that symptoms are not related to kidney problems.

Quote:
"Up to 75 percent of the kidneys have to be nonfunctional before you see clinical signs, so by the time you see it, there is very little normal kidney tissue left,” he said.
OMG! I'm so sorry you are going through these worries. Yes, please go to the vet and have them checked out.
give zak and stella a kiss from me and panda...and let me know what the vet has to say.....poor babies!
ABSOLUTELY call your Vet.

I discovered last week that Ty had had some of the recalled food (Science Diet wet). We IMMEDIATELY went to the Vet who did blood work looking for the bacteria that was found in the tainted food. The initial results are fine but our Vet is recommending that we repeat the blood work next week.

Sorry... that should have said 42 brands of cat food are now affected.
OK, I have changed the links to point to the list that I am maintaining on oes.org. I am maintaining that list in exactly one place. I have notices placed in all of oes.org's popular dog food articles directing people to the recall article. Hundreds and hundreds of people a day are seeing this info here.

For some reason, neither the MSNBC site nor the MENU site contain the Purina brand that has also been recalled.

So, if you want to pass along the recall info to anyone, please use the following URL:
Link:
http://www.oes.org/page2/12930~Eukanuba ... ecall.html

Plain text:
http://www.oes.org/page2/12930~Eukanuba ... ecall.html

If you know of any additional brands or other situations that need to be addressed which aren't listed on this URL on oes.org, please drop me a line so that we can maintain this info for everyone in the world.
We were told to look at the dog food container, if the food is manufactered by MENU Foods it is under the recall regardless of the brand name. That makes it a little easier than checking the brand list.

I checked our food, the Science Diet was manuyfactured by Menu Foods but the Pedigree was manufactured by Master.
Scary - I'm glad you didn't give them too much - way to be on your toes.
Hey thanks everyone we all have an appointment at 3:40pm today for blood work.
update-
Vet says they both look fine- get blood results today, but she said she wouldn't worry.
She also said that with all the dogs they have checked for problems, there has not been one that been seriously affected. This is a very popular vet in the heart of LA, so this is encouraging.

glad that you dogs will be fine. Very scary situation. Really makes you wonder & hope that they do more regulation of dog food.

Agreed. I think this is a something that needs serious attention.
That's great news. :D

We were at the vet's today and the local cat went home yesterday with a port-thingie in his back so his owner can give him sub-q fluids at home.
So glad Zak and stella are going to be OK. Cuddle for the kids from us.
Great news :)
I am just now reading this. What a scare Marc, I am glad they are going to be all right!

Where is that thread about how can people be so evil?
ok call me nuts. I stopped all the wet food bought a turkey, ground beef, checken chopped everything very small and froze individual containers to mix with the dry. I just pop it out of the freezer the night before so it's ready for them the next day. This food thing scared me and of course I have the spoiled brats and only two to deal with. I don't know how the breeders are dealing with this it must be so hard for them.

I also asked my vet for some vitamins to make sure they are getting all they need. The broth from the chicken and turkey works great with the dry too and I actually think it's cheaper than the wet food. I did a cooking marathon and basically made everything like you would soup so they get some veggy's too.

Well scootch over because I'm with you. We're on our second batch of chicken and vegetable stew this week and we're using it in place of the canned food. We threw out all canned food even though it's not on the list. I think the fact that the Menu Foods list was incomplete when it first came out is the main reason.

So now we all wait to see HOW this got into the dog and cat foods.
My Collie has always had a extremely sensative tummy she gets sick with milk bones so I was really worried about this. Since I started cooking she has not had one problem makes me wonder if I should have been doing this all along. Tonight they are having salmon with the rest of the family. We are really a sick bunch
