Recalled Food-related death?

My childhood cat, Cuddles, died two weeks ago. Our family assumed it was from old age as he was 15. Normally he is on hard cat food but during the winter my parents 'supplement' with some wet food (they live in MT). He was doing fine - acting like a cat half his age - and then all of a sudden he got sick and within two weeks he had passed away. He was being fed some of the recalled wet cat food consistently for a couple months up until the day he died. I put the two together last night when I was on the phone with my mom. She went and checked all the labels and they were consistent with the recalls, as were the receipts (who keeps cat food receipts :?: ) and his weird sudden sickness. . .

I don't know if we'll ever know, but he had a fabulous long life even with the sad end, so it's not quite as harsh as other cases . . .

Awww poor Cuddles! That is very sad. :(
 I'm sorry for your loss. Was Cuddles seen by a vet?
Your parents may want to see if at least the vet fees can be reimbursed.

Also, if symptoms were consistant with renal failure, the mfr. might wish to have the product returned so they can test it.
Oh, that's terrible. :( :( Poor Cuddles. I'm sorry for your loss.
I am so sorry. :(
That is so sad. Do they know what happened to all the food
to cause this?

The other day I had ran my Moms cat to the vet she said he was acting sick all of a sudden.
He threw up in the car and stopped breathing. I was frantic and started CPR in the car while driving. I got him to the vet just in time , they got him back!

They keep him there a few days on IV's. He just came home and seems ok but we don't know what happened ! The vet does not know either. All he said is he died from chocking on his vomit, but why he was sick and vomiting we don't know.

I think we will have to run him back for some blood works just to double check everything.
The reason the vet did not do a whole bunch of test just then is because 'Otis' the kitty is blind and so very scared not knowing what was going on.

My mom feeds so many different kinds of can food (Otie can't chew hard food) and my Mom doesn't remember what she had feed. I can't help but wonder !

So sorry to hear about Cuddles :(

I wonder how long whatever is causing these animals to be sick has been in these foods. So many people feed these wet food brands daily. ...and if these animals are getting sick from eating this once or for a long time.
I'm so sorry :( Poor Cuddles :(
Oh, how sad :( This problem with the food has made me very distraught. I was watching the news this morning and they interviewed a few people in waiting rooms with their dogs. I started to cry too :(
Aww... I am sorry to hear about Cuddles. Poor thing :(
I am really confused by the recall. Why it appears to be an ingredient??? that effects some of their cans/pouches but not all of them made by a brand.

After checking all the numbers our commissary recalled for IAMS Cat Chicken entrees and the IAMS website, I felt it was safe to feed my cat the can I have upstairs. A part of me didn't want to feed it at all because the numbers are off by 1 or 2, but still... we were told the store has listed all the cans that were recalled and my can did not match the numbers.

My cat, who never throws up, has thrown up 4 times in the past 5 minutes. I JUST gave her the wet food. I wouldn't think there would be an immediate reaction, but she has never thrown up before after eating wet food (this brand or any brand).

However, my other cat is fine for now (and she is the one who throws up normally).
Mop lover I was just at the local dog food store and they were telling me they had a bunch of the bad food they sent back.

I talked briefly about your beloved Cuddles and they had told me that their local representative said if any one had a tragedy like yours to make sure they reported the death to the main company.
They said the company is wanting to compare blood test and other things to get to the bottom of this.

I can just imagine how hard this is for you and your family but maybe with help from people like you they can stop something like this from happening again.

Again I am so sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry to hear about Cuddles. A friend of mine here has her small dog in the vet hospital right now because of the tainted food.
Thanks everyone for your replies. My mom has contacted the company already and they told her they would be keeping in touch. Because the ground is still frozen in MT my parents were keeping his body frozen until they could bury him. So I suppose if it came to that someone could look at him. Kindof freaks me out to think about it . . . :?
I'm so sorry for your family's loss of Cuddles, Emily. for it to happen that quickly had to be quite a shock. Hopefully the food manufacturer will do something for the people who lost their pets due to the tainted food.
I watched our news last evening, and someone's 5 yr old otherwise healthy cat is severly affected. the lady has 2 cats - the other one got sick, but that one is improving.

Hugs to Antoinette's parents cat and Emily's family over the loss of Cuddles.
Joah, I would throw it out personally...

One thing still confusing is that the evening of the recall they said they didn't know exactly what is was that was toxic? Yet they knew which brands and lot numbers to recall. So either they still aren't sure, and there may be more recalled, or they do know and aren't saying?

I have a couple of cans of Iams dog food, one of which could possibly fall within the range of the bad numbers, but not the plant code. They also are not the slices in gravy, they are the pate. I still don't trust it though, I'd like to wait and see if any more types/cans are recalled and hear more about whatever tests they have done to isolate the problem.
Emily,
I am very sorry to hear about Cuddles. :(
My extend my sympathies to your parents.
I am so sorry to hear about cuddles. :ghug: gentle sheepie hugs to your family
Emily, that sounds like it could be the bad food. My aunt's 8mo old healthy kitty died last week from kidney failure. All of the sudden, it was just very lethargic and wouldn't move or eat. Then it threw up once or twice. That was Thursday, she took it to the vet that day, then it wasn't better on Friday so she took it back to the vet. They kept it overnight to do blood work and it died at the vet's office. The blood work came back and said it was kidney failure, but they had no idea what could have caused it.
Then the next Friday, the press release came out about the bad food and sure enough her food was on the list....

I was talking with my dad about this yesterday. . .what a mystery. :(
Condolences for your lose of Cuddles, from Miss Ellie, Buffett, and me.

The reports today suspect rat poison in the tainted food. While we were in Vieques last week, I met a vet from Maryland. He had been on the Island longer than us, so had missed the recall announcement.
When I filled him in on details, he said his practice had seen several incidents like Emily's and Callies Moms' aunt.

I truly believe the incidents related to this issue are vastly under reported. So many loved ones lost so much sadness from carelessness.
After I had talked about my moms cat on this post I seen another cat food in my moms cabinet that was on the list. I asked her if she had feed this food to the cats also.
Sure enough she just did!

I grabbed the empty can from the garbage and placed it in a double zip lock bag and called the info phone # they gave for the bad food. It is BAD FOOD. They told me to watch the cats and someone would call me back.
Well no one called me back and I was going in for surgery (Hysterectomy) the next morning. Thank God the cats were ok.

I am so pissed off ! Do they really care or not what happens to these animals?
They need to pull all the food that could possibly be bad.

My Mom has the beginning stages of Alzheimer's, for that reason she lives down stairs from us in our home which we converted a walk out basement to a full apartment for her. She is on her own but we are here to make sure she is always ok.
Well you can imagine how upset she is with herself now. She first feed a bad can of food to her blind cat and he barley made it through and now she feed another can of food to her kitten and blind cat and could have killed them both.
I tried to explain that it is not her fault they just kept adding more foods to the list!

As of now both of her cats seem ok and If I feel up to it on Monday(I just got back home) I am going to take both to the vet for more blood works.

My Mom would be crushed it something happened to her cats.My dad passed away 9 years ago and they are all she has.

Sorry to ramble on but thanks for listening to me vent .........
