Troop-view combat footage from Iraq

I found a link to this site on the Pentagon's website.
Quote:
“How do we reach out to those in mid-town America who don’t know someone serving here? How do they find out what’s going on?” Caldwell asked. “One thing people don’t know is what’s really going on over here on a daily basis.”

The initiative first came about when soldiers began brainstorming about how to reach out and share stories of what’s happening in Iraq with a greater number of people. The group determined that the user-generated Web site would be a perfect venue for the more visually oriented, younger American audience.

“We want the American public, from an unfiltered vantage point, to be able to see what coalition forces and Iraqi security forces are doing here in Iraq,” he said.

Will it really be "unfiltered"? Of course not, but that can be a good thing.

Mechanisms are in place so video clips can quickly and accurately be posted to the Web site, while still adhering to operational security requirements, Caldwell said.

Multi-National Force - Iraq established this YouTube channel to give viewers around the world a "boots on the ground" perspective of Operation Iraqi Freedom from those who are fighting it.

Video clips document action as it appeared to personnel on the ground and in the air as it was shot. We will only edit video clips for time, security reasons, and/or overly disturbing or offensive images.

What you will see on this channel in the coming months:
- Combat action
- Interesting, eye-catching footage
- Interaction between Coalition troops and the Iraqi populace.
- Teamwork between Coalition and Iraqi troops in the fight against terror.

What we will NOT post on this channel:
- Profanity
- Sexual content
- Overly graphic, disturbing or offensive material
- Footage that mocks Coalition Forces, Iraqi Security Forces or the citizens of Iraq.

This YouTube channel is brought to you by www.mnf-iraq.com, the official Web site of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

No matter what your stance on the US involvement in Iraq, more sunlight is a good thing. Let's see it from another angle.

I do think the entire war needs to be brought into vivid relief for those who are not as aware of what is happening.
When I see those videos I cannot help but think of what if any difference it may make in the outcome of the war. Certainly how it will be written into history will be far different from WWI and WWII.
I guess I am on the fence about it.... I certainly don't want to watch the atrocities of war and thinkg that much of what is shown on the news is inappropraite and offensive. On the other hand, if people actually saw the pain and death that war causes on a more personal level perhaps they would not be in such a hurry to go to war. If President Bush had a child in Iraq or ever had to dodge bullets himself perhaps he would not be so quick to increase the troop size.

Every night the CBS news "highlights" someone who has given their life in Iraq, it always makes me weep.

I heard an interesting piece on NPR about how this country is so willing to send Americans to die in the war and at the same time our finances are heavily vested in companies in the mid east that diectly or indeirectly support terrorism. Many "average joes" in this country would be suprised to know just how heavily their pension and investment plans are invested in sketchy mid east concerns.

Yes, exactly.... it needs to be important, to each and every person, whether they approve of it or not. My generation was born after the WW's, but my parents lived through it. My grandparents fought through it. My generation had it drilled into our heads, no war no war no war. When I heard Bush declare war, even though it was already happening, those words... said out loud... gave me chills. It was a horrible feeling. As it should... if ever a society becomes blase about loss of life, I think it is lost already.
