House training....HELP!!!

We have our baby gates up during the day where our puppy is free to roam in the kitchen and lanai. We are trying to encourage him to piddle out in the grass but I'm afraid he's been going 40% in the house and 60% outside.

He hasn't done poo in the house since we've gotten him. He fully understands that the grass is his toilet as far as poo is concerned. I was told they can't control their bladders but at the same token, he doesn't make an attempt to try to get outside. Sometime's Matisse will walk around the kitchen and just go. Do we pick him up as he's doing it and carry him out to the grass, or let him finish and carry him out to the grass.

Any suggestions???

Thank you

How old is he now? They really have no control over their bladders at first, usually by about 16 weeks they have some control.

Is he crate trained? Crating him for short periods even if you are home can help, they like to keep their bed clean.

I think just consistency is key and it sounds like you've got that managed, it will come with time :)
If it's 40/60 already I think you're doing wonderfully! :)
Not knowing how old the puppy is, I agree with Willowsprite in that puppies have little control over their bladders when young.

If you see the puppy or "catch her in the act", don't scold or punish but give a Oh, no, and quickly scoop her up and put her outside. Once outside use a "command" word, like "potty" and when she starts to piddle again, keep repeating the same word softly over and over until she is done. then praise like crazy, maybe give a treat...she'll get the hand of it! if you do catch her in the act, I suggest picking her up quickly and not fumbling around for a leash or letting her walk to outside...she will not be able to hold it! If you see the accident after the fact, also do not scold her. Just clean it up with a good cleaner like Nature's Miracle and learn your lesson that she needs to be supervised closely during this housebreaking time  Remember she is doing nothing wrong by peeing. She is just doing it in the wrong place

Also, we limited water intake about 8pm at night during this phase...

There are alot of good books out there that will help.
Can you put some bells on a door? Ring is every time you open the door so he will associate it with going potty outside. He may or may not pick up the association. Fozzie realized it was more effective to smack the door with a paw :D
He is in crate training now and doing quite well. He goes in there all night with one potty wake up around 3am. We did the crate since the first night he was home. The first night was a nightmare but since then he's learned that that is where he sleeps. There is almost no whining howling, crying, yelping or anything like that anymore.

There is someone in the household watching over him at all times. We are in shifts. It's weird though because sometimes he'll just up and go all over the kitchen floor in the middle of playing with a toy or something.

I like the bell on the door Idea....

Not weird at all... sounds like a typical puppy :)
We take him outside immediately after he finishes and then watch him in the grass and say " go potty" .....

I just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing by that....

My new best friend is nature's miracle...LOL...
