Dog yelping if handled near rear back / hind legs

Just about to put him out to sleep and he seems very sensitive if stroked firmly or handled on his back or hind legs - he seems ok in himself and is eating / playing normally. It's too late for a trip to the vets over here in the UK.

Any suggestions? :(

Poor doggie! There are lots of possibilities. It would be helpful to have a bit more information.

What kind of dog is he?
How old is he?
Is it both hips or just one?
Is he limping?
Did this come on suddenly?
Might he have arthritis?
Might he have hip displaysia?
Was he playing rough?
Did he slip on something?
Do you see any injuries?

Of course, the information and advice you receive here is no substitute for contacting your Vet in the morning. . . But it might help make tonight go a little easier.
Hi Valerie,

yes he's a 2 year old OES, the first i noticed was just now. He's been his usual active self tonight eating and playing fine - I just brought him back from his last walk of the day put him out to bed and that's when i noticed the problem.

It looks like the rear end of his back is sensitive and his hind legs - he's never been like this before and i'm quite concerned. He suffered a hernia at birth which the vet has been happy with after he operated. I know the breed can suffer with problem hips and that's my concern :(

I'll check on him in the morning and if it's no better will get him across to the vets.

i bet he sleeps better than me tonight!
Keep him quiet, rested and contained, no running around, out on a lead to potty etc till you can see a vet in the morning.
Sorry for your long night ahead. Let us know how it goes in the morning. I hope you get good news from the Vet.
Poor thing- please keep us posted.

Max and I are sending good thoughts and wishes your way!

Maybe he's just sore, like we get as people sometimes you're just sore from normal activities. Hope he's better in the morning! Good thing you are right on top of things. Copper had a strenuous play date one day and literally could barely walk for almost two days. I took him to the vet and INSISTED on tests and x-rays. Several hundred dollars later and he was just sore. Good luck.
Hope he settles for the night and feels better in the morning. It may be nothing, might have twisted an ankle to to speak...
Dancer gave me a smiliar scare as a pup, lame in one of her front legs one day out of the blue. She was a puppy but I don't remember how old.

She was fine though, and not a problem since *touch wood*
Poor baby - I hope everything turns out ok. It's so scary when they do something inconsistently. :? Let us know!
I hope all is fine. Still, if she is sore, it may indicate possible hip problems and the need for some type of remediation on your part. Poor baby.

Reminds me of a scare we had with MO. She'd yelp everytime she'd climb onto her chair or couch. We thought hips, legs, feet..........but it turned out she has a hair mat beside her ribs near her back legs   The thing would pull each time she climbed. Sure glad we didn't take her to the vet for that
Hi Jester,

How is he doing? Could you please give an update?
Hope you got to figure out what was bothering the poor baby~
hi all,

thanks your concern.

Dan seems a little better today - the area doesn't seem as tender anyway.

I took Sheepieboss's advice as he has a few mats on his undercarriage that normally he won't let me at! Anyway he lay back today and let me cut away - giving me a big thank you lick when i was done - hopefully that's cured the problem but i'll be keeping a close eye.

Here's to a better nights sleep anyway.

I'll get some photo's up when i can figure out how
Ahh so it must of been the matt monsters then. Glad it is nothing serious and hope you get a better night sleep tonight.

Look forward to seeing photos.
