neutering of truman

hey so truman is going in to be neutered tomorrow and i am wondering if anyone can confirm or deny that this will change his attitude a bit. He is almost a year old and had lately been getting a little agressive with his sister and we dont like it. They always have play fought but lately it has been getting a little worse. We are hoping that the snip snip will calm him down a bit. What does everyone think?? How were your males after having their manhood taken away????

We don't have anyone here that has been "tutored"...lol...that's what we call it.
So I really can't help you with specifics.

I have to tell you that when I first read your subject line I saw" Neutering humans".
"Neutering humans" is what I read at first too!

The changes I've observed in our boys, after the "snip"...less (inappropriate) interest in other dogs,...less inclination to wander or escape the yard,...reduced "marking" behavior,....and a greatly increased interest in food/treats.

I've heard that it can also reduce aggression, although our males have always been neutered fairly young, with one exception (a rescue, who we got at age 7) and were not particularly aggressive to begin with.

good luck...hope this helps!
What is the best age to get your puppy neutered? I've only had girl doggies and always had them spayed around 5or 6 mo.
Hi,

I've gone through neuters of six dogs and aprox 20 cats and I've always noticed they do calm down. It doesn't happen instantly as takes a few weeks for the hormones to disipate from their bodies.

Last Tues I had a foster male cat neutered and today notice his urine smells way less stronger than it had the past two weeks he's been in my home.

Good Luck to Truman and you will see some changes within a few weeks. Some traits that he has learned prior to neutering however may still be there but with patience and training should eleviate somewhat.

Marianne and the boys

To answer Cheyenne's question I would have a male neutered at aprox 6-7 months old given the opportunity. That said, I've often felt I waited a bit too long with Merlin, whom I had neutered at 10 months. The reason I say that is because I had all my others neutered earlier but Merlin was purchased as a show dog. He did show very dominant tendencies however, so I decided to have him neutered afterall so as not to pass along that trait.

thank you Marianne, I'm glad I asked our vet always has a waiting list. The last time we had one of our shepherds spayed it was a 3 mo wait. He is a great vet, everyone loves him so he's always busy!!!
Truman update?? :D
so truman just came home from the vets and he is very groggy and very funny. right now he is sleeping on the floor and not moving much at all. very funny. we feel sorry for him but all went well and he will be good to go. he is only a little less of a man in our eyes and still the cutest boy ever.

I just got my 16 month old sheepie neutered on the 8th so it's been a week, I was having the same problem with my dog with being more aggressive and wanting to wander. I'm hoping he calms down but as I've been told it's not just neutering him. We will be going to a dog behaviorist - next tuesday for some more training since he seems very disobedient.
Around 1.5 - 2 years old is when unneutered boy sheepdogs seem to become sexually mature & really start to test their dominance. It is true that you do need to correct certain behaviors before they get out of hand, but neutering also will help. I've heard that 3 is around the age where a dog becomes set in its ways, so you should see some improvement with Truman. We got Frank neutered around 2.5 years. He almost immediately stopped some boy behaviors that I didn't like. He still has a ton of energy. You will need to tend to weight control a bit, as their metabolism does change too.
P. Simon, my sheepie, was neutered last thursday.
He's fine, but would be better if I would take off the "lamp shade".
Just wondering how Truman and Simon are doing since their neutering?
Merlin, Blue, Panda are sending sloppy kisses to their buddies with lots of sympathy and can relate.

Usually if no problems arise they seem to be fine within a day or two.

From what I understand most males do settle after being neutered, however if there are behavior issues I wouldn't assume this will fix it and not attempt other training methods as well.
You know, when I first saw this thread, I swear I thought it said "Human"
Oh Ron perhaps a Fruedian SNIP?

:excited:
