But Mom, I'm SO hungry!!

Another trip to the vet last week for my poor girl. :( She started out vomitting, then it progressed to very runny stool. And with her hips as bad as they are, she couldn't always get up in time to alert us she had to go out. And the SMELL!! Well, we just won't go there!! So our shop vac got a GREAT work-out last week.

Diagnosis is gastro-enteritis. Vet said to feed her only boiled hamburger or chicken and rice for 5 days (which I had already started before the vet visit), and to limit her water intake. Said to feed her 3-4 times/day in smaller quantities so that her tummy could heal. Also gave us Centrine tablets to give her, 2 tablets twice/day.

Sounds easy enough, right? WRONG! Apparently the vet doesn't know my RAVENOUS dog, my garbage picking dog (anyone remember the under-the-sink garbage can stories??? ) When we eat, she gives you the SADDEST eyes ever, but she's never nasty. The look just says - But Mom, I'm SO hungry!!

When we feed her, she gobbles it down in seconds flat, then drinks whatever water we've put out for her. Then she paces the dinette and kitchen, scouring the floor for ANY little morsel of food may be there, until we finally tell her - THERE'S NO MORE! and make her leave the kitchen.

For her age and all her infirmities, Drez never ceases to amaze me with her ability to think and her cunning. Friday night we emptied the garbage can and put a new liner in it. Dale threw away ONE tea bag, left the can under the sink, and we went out. When we came home, the cabinet was open, the can was pulled out, the liner was on the floor and right next to it laid the tea bag. She must have figured that as long as the can was under the sink, it must have had goodies in it. She must have been SO disappointed!

Saturday was her piece de resistance, though. Dale went out to run errands, I was upstairs working on the computer and Drez was on the first floor by herself. No big deal, we've done this thousands of times. The garbage can was on top of the counter, WAY back, the cabinet door was open. We were safe, right? Think again!! :lmt:

Dale came home and I immediately hear - WHAT DID YOU GET INTO NOW??? :twitch: There were crumbs and pieces of plastic bag strewn around on the floor. Turns out there was an almost full loaf of bread ON THE COUNTER and she got it down and wolfed down THE WHOLE THING!!! This is a dog who can't jump anymore, and who would fall flat on her face if she tried. The bread must have been close enough to the edge of the counter for her to just stretch her neck to reach up and grab it!!

Needless to say she didn't get any chicken and rice that night, and it did WONDERS for her pooping problem!!

Geesh! Who says these dogs aren't smart?? Her body may be failing her slowly, but that brain is still working overtime!!

Oy!

Oh Chris - I can't help but smile!! :D Talk about SPIRIT!! Drez has it in SPADES!! What a trooper your girl is. She thinks the vet does not know what he's talking about - when a girl is hungry - she's gonna find a way to eat.

I'll be laughing all day thinking about her!

Glad she's feeling better.

That's hysterical. I'm glad Drezzie didn't get into anything serious. Bread is good stuff. How can you blame a hungry hippo.
Drez is such a character! What a role model for the younger generation. That girl has Spunk!! Really makes me smile to think how crafty and capable she is.

I hope her tummy woes clear up soon so she can have her rightful meals.

I love Drez . . . :hearts:

Ditto, couldn't have said it better  What a girl! :)
That is too funny. My parents' sheepdog is turning 10 this year and besides some tummy troubles she's still as spunky as ever...the eat in a second and then rove the floor for crumbs is EXACTLY what our Maggie does...
I love Drez
Well..we know who Annie takes after then :D
Drez, Drez, Drez!!! Minx is more like it!!
Yay Drez for being so determined!! Hope she gets better soon!
hehehehehehe, I think Drez has been taking counter surfing lessons from Tasker!!!!
What a spunky girl! Go Drezzie!
She's got such determination. :)
That's cool!
  She is such a character, where there is a will there is a way, especially for starving Drez. 8)

Bet the bread helped firm everything, see she knows a bland diet while not well, good one drez
I hope the tummy troubles clear up soon. But I loved the story - it sure made me smile.

Thanks for sharing.

 You're one in a million Drez. You're lucky to have such a loving Mom! And she's lucky to have you special Drezzie :!:
Aw.. such a cute story. Hope her tummy feels better soon :hearts:

Lori
Chris, how's Drezzie's tum doing????
She's a little better but still not 100% yet. We had to extend her Centrine pill treatment for another 5 days. Had to up the amount of food we give her because of how ravenous she was. Vet said to give her 3 cups twice/day and to start adding in a little dry food to see how she does. Stool is better, but still a bit runny.

Guess we old broads just don't heal as fast any more!!
