Some TV shows are just too campy for me

I watched Desperate Housewives for a little bit, but it just got too campy and now I avoid it.

Boston Legal was losing me for a bit, but they seem to be dialing back the camp, so I'm sticking with it -- at the moment.

I mean, I DO like humor in my sitcoms, and some can be offbeat... but you know, but I lost a ton of interest in the show when the lawyers paraded into a courtroom dressed in Colonial garb carrying loaded rifles. It just lost all sense of believability -- it's one thing to have lawyers have hijinks outside the courtroom, but if we're going to take their legal soliloquies (carrying liberal social messages) seriously, they can't do stuff like that.

So, whattaya think?

Is the term "Jump the Shark" the appropriate term for this; was that the moment the sitcom "Jumped the Shark" for me? Where does that term come from?

I'll tell you another "Jumped the Shark" moment for Ronaldo -- when the shark bit the helicopter in Jaws -- what was it, Jaws 3?
Any show that does that loses me quick as a viewer...

I watch few shows, but the ones that I stick with have to remain quality shows. I don't give them a second chance.
Jump the Shark comes from an episode of Happy Days where Fonzie attempted to actually jump a shark. This was the point that people felt Happy Days was over.

There is a web site (probably www.jumptheshark.com but I didn't check) that lists shows and when they turned from "must see" to "must turn".
what the heck does "too campy" mean? :lmt:

I've never heard that term either, but I got the gist of it putting it into context with the rest of Ron's post.
Think of the Batman TV series.

Farcical, over-the-top, fake, playful, so-bad-it's-good, etc., etc.
I don't know too many guys that mention Desperate Housewives or Dallas when talking about tv unless they're just mentioning a particular woman being hot. 8) :P

Have you seen House? Soo soo good. A little deep, a little romance, lots of sarcasm/dry humor, a little strange/unusual, very interesting, and it's a show you can pick up now unlike other my other favorites.

Jump the shark refers to the episode of Happy days where Fonzie attempted to actually jump his motorcycle over a shark in a tank. It was at that point that the show went downhill and, hence, the phrase was coined for all shows that took a dive at a certain point when it just became too ridiculous.
I used to absolutely love House. But its way over the top for me now.
I think it jumped the shark when they had a boy who turned out to have his twin in his brain...or maybe it was when it had the preacher boy who healed the cancer girl cuz he had herpes (or something like that).

Anyhoo...I find it ridiculous now.
Ooooooooooooooo, but last night's episode was SO good. House getting kissed?!?! I was like what the heck!!!! I'm strangely attracted to him. Not really. Kinda. He grows on ya.

I dont watch the show either any more, but I have to agree with you L...there is something strangely attractive about him.....

My other favorite guy is Doug from trading spaces...I dont think he is ''cute'' but something about his raunchy sarcastic personality is kinda hot....
I can't stand House...

But I'm with ya Darcy...I love Doug Wilson...now that's sarcasm and wit that I am okay with!

Yea, I thought that was pretty good BUT, do you REALLY think they are going to give him brain cancer after "all that"???? Of course I fell asleep before it was over so don't know how it turned out.

Medically the show has really "jumped the shark" , personality wise he isn't too far from some of the Dr's I've worked with in my career
^^^

I have mentioned Doug in chat before too! My husband thinks I'm so weird, and he hates seeing hot girls with not-so-hot guys. I tell him that he's different. He's got that football, cute guy kind of feel...
I absolutely LOVE House. Fantastic show, and Dr. House is sexy is a weird kind of way.
Last night's episode was fantastic. The kissing scene was great...
They really had me going, briefly, with the brain cancer thing. The way they ended it was disappointing, not that it wasn't a great idea and well done, it was... but part of me always hopes they'll just let House have the occasional redeeming moment. LOL
BTW, did you know he actually plays piano quite well and did all those parts himself? The guest, Dave Matthews, had to have a hand double

What made it worse is - Fonzie jumped the shark on water skis, not on his motorcycle. Fonzie in a black leather jacket on his motorcycle - cool. Fonzie in a black leather jacket and bathing suit on water skis? Desperate.

HMMMM. maybe it's because I can't imagine being attracted to a Dr of ANY KIND (real or actor) but he just doesn't "do it" for me!!!
I missed the ending (last 15 min) too because I was trying to help someone in chat fix their computer, but I'm glad he doesn't have brain cancer. So he has a drug addiction? I could only hear bits and pieces...

I wouldn't think Doctors are anything like House! Cocky, yes, but not so rude to patients and diagnosing like he is.

Why not! My husband will be insulted! j/k
I don't find him attractive either. On the show he always looks dirty and bummy to me. His clothes are a mess.

I saw him on Actor's Studio and he was cleaned up, suited up and speaking with a lovely English accent. THAT I could go for!!!!

I think the House personality puts me off.

So he DOESN'T have brain Ca???

Actually, I've worked with some pretty rude Dr's (both to staff and patients). Indian (India Indian) tend to be the worse as far as treating patients like "objects" not humans.
Nope...no brain cancer. He pretended (and stole someone else's medical records) so he could have drugs injected in his brain to get high.

Yep...a real role model.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME????????????????????????? :excited: Glad I fell asleep, I would have been SCREAMING at the tv!

That's certainly not a newsflash, he's been popping vicodin like candy all along...
Oh, okay. Started watching it about a month ago :)
House is one of my favorites! :D Ive been a Hugh Lorie fan for a long time, and yes, the piano-playing scenes were real...for a truly bizarre shock, all House fans who have never seen him in anything else should rent or buy "Wooster and Jeeves" (BBC comedy series), "Blackadder" (ditto), or "A Bit of Fry and Laurie" (old British comedy bit show)....Belive it or not, he usually plays goofy, funny characters, and his comedy bits are often musical!

Sheeeeesh...
Glad he wasn't around when I landed Joan :hearts:
Don't worry, my husband is just jealous he didn't get catherine bell or maybe someone who looks like Sandra Bullock for a wife. 8)

Lol. You're right-- thanks for correcting my mistake. I should've looked it up first, I was going with off the top of my head tv knowledge!

Love, love love House.

Hate, hate, hate Dave Matthews. I heard he wasn't even acting and that he really can't button his shirt.
I watched a couple of videos on Youtube with Henry Winkler talking about "Jumping the Shark". He seems to be ok with it.

He DID mention that the show was #1 for 6 years after he jumped the shark. lol

He also mentioned that in an episode of "Arrested Development" he had to leave a boat to get something to eat, and there was a shark there, so he is the only actor to have jumped the shark twice.

He's cool.

We need a Joanie loves Chachi reference.
By the way, did you know Hugh Laurie has a very British accent? It freaked me out hearing an interview... usually you hear people faking a british accent on tv shows, it seems to strange to me that he's faking an American accent LOL

Blackadder is a classic! I saw Hugh Laurie on Inside the Actors Studio too - amazing interview. He's a really talented guy. I do have a problem with the drug addiction of his House character - there's a lot of drug addiction in the medical profession, but anyone that blatant would certainly lose their license.

sue believe it or not brian has a friend whose ex wife is an er doc...they divorced after she was addicted to vicodin and other issues...she still practices today

Stacy,

In The Wire on HBO, there was another Brittish actor playing an American that was a main character for the first three seasons and you could not remotely detect his accent. One day I saw the actor, Idris Elba doing an interview and was amazed by the accent. I think most actors spent a great deal of time with speech specialists to be able to lose and accent. If you ever have a chance, pick up season one of the Wire on DVD in the video store, it's a great show and the acting is fabulous.

During Hugh's interview on the Actors Studio, he said it is easy to pick up an American accent, since most of the movies and many of the tv shows in the UK are American.

The British accents sure lends a lot of class, doesn't it? Years ago, I had a boyfriend from London...ugly as deformed dog, but when he would speak, he was the most beautiful man you've ever seen!!!
Ummm Did I mention my husband is British?
I am a huge house fan too, it actually clashes here on TV with the newer series Heros, so been watching house instead.

Love Supernatural & Medium as well. A great laugh is My Name is Earl.
Lisa, do find it odd at all to watch tv shows with american accents? or do you just not give it a second thought...??

Maybe the dub the voices with australian accents??!! :D
No really don't give it any thought, do pick up on aussie accents though trying to sound american with shows from there. Not good.

The blonde doc in house is an Aussie at least he does not try and speak with an accent.

You should hear Russell Crowes real aussie voice, I think you would be in for a shock. He does do a good Amercian and British accent when he is acting. 8)
Wynette...wowie...now for sure you can adopt me!!!!!

Hee hee
