OES size/weight range

I have a question for those folks who are more knowledgeable than I am with the breed standard, and also the typical size and appearance of sheepdogs. How large are OES supposed to be, Max/minimum? We are fostering a new OES (named Max) at our house, and he is really BIG...not fat, just tall and large! I dont know his weight yet, although, at a guess, Id say maybe 85-90 LBs. He's approx. 30" tall, at the shoulder. Is this normal? 8O

The breed standard says

Size-- Height (measured from top of withers to the ground), Dogs: 22 inches (55.8 cm) and upward. Bitches: 21 inches (53.3 cm) and upward.

Proportion-- Length (measured from point of shoulder to point of ischium [tuberosity]) practically the same as the height. Absolutely free from legginess or weaselness. (In other words, a square dog-- not a tube!)

That being said, that's still a pretty big range. There are a few females on here that are 50 pounds and then there are males over 100 pounds. It usually comes down to the lines they come from. Big dogs usually make big dogs, small dogs make small.
He's not a dog, he's a pony!
Our pony Teddy is only 39 inches, and he rode home with us in the back of the Suburban!
PS - he's in daughter LeAnne's avatar picture.
Define difference between withers an top of shoulders.....for those who don't know. I personally am never exactly sure.

I have one of those "pony size" sheepdogs....and one of the "wee ones"....ying/yang. I think something in between would be perfect.
Withers is on the topline - where the 2 shoulder blades come together around the spine. This is the official height measuring spot for most 4 legged animals.

In the length description -Point of the shoulder is on the chest part and is the bump (or point) that sticks out of the shoulder blade in the front. If you are next to your dog and run your hand down from the side of the neck to where the leg starts, you will feel the point of the shoulder.
Sounds like Max is a big boy. Both of our sheepies were big boys, too. Oscar is currently 112 lbs, and 29 1/2 inches at the shoulder, but he's about 5 lbs on the chunky side after this abysmal winter. Quincy Bear was slightly heavier and a bit shorter.

Max is certainly not out of line for the breed.
he must be related to sues bailey...i call him "my little pony''
:D
Why isn't there a picture thread for MAX??!?!?!?!?!

Oh my gosh, he is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cute. Now I'm jealous. hahaha

I love your artwork I saw uploaded in your album too.

Max is huge!!! So, I can't believe you guys have him. I'm so HAPPY!!! Scott looks real cute. I like how his hair is growing in. Very attractive!
Sounds great to me! Bing probably won't be that big - he's going to be on the smaller size scale. Apparently when OES were used as working dogs a variety of sizes were used to do different jobs effectively. I think I read that on the new OES manual on the national club website . . .
Max looks like Sam - very stout  When I measured Lucky from the top of his shoulder blades to the floor down his front leg he is 30 in tall and weighs in at 98 lbs. Sam is only 28 in tall and weighs in at 106 lbs. But I admit that Sam is on the chubby side (but my husband told me not to say that aloud - I would hurt Sam's feelings  )
Oh, my, what a handsome boy Max is. :D From the pictures, he looks proportionate. Is he as nice as he looks? He seems to be very comfortable in your home!!!
