How hard is it when deciding on new curtains.

Just been down to look at new curtains for the family room, we have double story windows to cover and a ceiling to floor drop on the curtains.

There huge and after the new lounges time to change the old daggy curtains we have there.

I want something to lift the room as the furniture is pretty dark and neutral. Not to bold in pattern as there big windows. 8) But something with colour or a slight pattern to brighten up everything.

Geez I am so confused, came home with lots of samples and trying to imagine it megasized on the windows is darn hard. 8O

Sheesh I hate decorating

Have to get on with it, still need to finish the Kitchen, just ordered new dining chairs to go with the old antique table we have had for years & years, with no chairs to go, geez that took me 8 months to find them

Hubby is nagging me to finish everything off inside. I am not in the mood for all this, maybe it would of been easier to move house.

Oh groaners I believe it's easier to move mountains than move a house. :D

Don't know what to tell you Lisa but I've been fixated on those home reno and designer shows for months now.

Things that are currently in fashion are Roman blinds, light airy sheers to bring light into the room (highly suggested for dark rooms) and light wooden slates..not sure what would fit in your place.

Good luck and make sure you take photos!

Marianne and the boys
good luck, I'm lucky my sister is a fantastic decorator so I just say ... hey Sis ... and my worries are over
Jean can you send your sis downunder PALEEEEASE

Marianne windows too big for blinds, and we also have have a glass sliding door to cover to match the window at the side of the family room.

The drop to the floor is about 15ft, on the Mega Window, so blinds would require awfully long arms to pull them up and down. 8)

Slat blinds are out too, way to expensive to cover that window, so curtains again it has to be.

Geez too many choices on fabrics. My head is spinning with all these colours and designs. 8O

I'll probably be back there tomorrow with another arm full of samples to bring home to see how they look.
Do you want shears or something similar light weight, or do they need to be thicker to block sunlight?
Yes light weight this time, old curtains are wool & total block out, but don't need them to be so heavy as we get no hot afternoon summer sun in that room to worry about total block out.

So something light and fresh looking, at the moment these oldies look horrible, can't complain they have been up for eons. Time for a change. :D

That's the trouble you change a few things in the place then everything else looks daggy and old.

Why did I start this in the first place.
Can you take a picture, Lisa? I'm trying to picture your setup.
This is the room with my daggy old curtains and Mega window.

I think they showed in her new leather couches thread.

Oops - we posted at the same time. Lisa!
There is a dining alcove up the other end, all dark wood, so need a lift to brighten the whole room.
Do you have IKEA in Australia? They have some great curtains. Lots of fun lightweights and shears. Or check out the fabric stores. Shears would be really simple to make, especially because you need them so long.
#1, how did I miss the couch pictures? I really like them a lot! Are they brown? They look pretty low slung, and close to the ground, too. Or is it just the overhead shot deceiving my eyes?

So, are you trying to cover the giant window all in one shot? Ooh, what about some sort of motorized function that would move things up and down or side to side? Just press a button and swoosh. How cool would that be?
Yes we have IKEA. so might go and look there.

Motorised blinds are great Jill, but would cost a squllion to do that huge window. Plus the sliding glass door that we walk in and out of to the other side of the yard for our BBq's. :D

Yes there a dark dark brown nearly black colour in the leather and low slung too. :D

So curtains and the old fashioned pull the cord to open them.

Decisions, decisions if hubby had his way we would be living in the 70's with bold clashing primary colours

You should of seen the colours in the bathroom when we first got married, the type that makes you ill when you go in there and blinds you 8O .
The windows look amazing! Can we see a view from the ground looking up? I'd like to see what the tops of the windows look like. Do you really need curtains or are you just looking for the color/impact of fabric? You might consider only doing a partial cover-- either bottom or top depending on which view you want to obscure. . . No law says they have to cover the whole thing top to bottom. Maybe a valance box at the top would be nice. . .
Good luck Lisa, I'm sure you'll choose the perfect thing. I have the same problem, I solved it by not choosing anything for 12 years. 8O You sure are right that when you get something new it makes everything else look "daggy". I'm always wanting to redo stuff.
Look around at some of the decorated new homes.
I went to one this weekend - and OMG, breathtaking! The entire home was beige, white and some dark brown - very classic and soothing. I loved the white seude diningroom chairs - not practical, but beuatiful.
They had two story windows across the living room and breakfast room. Closer to 20 ft or more as the rest of the house has 10 ft ceilings. My first thought was there is a hunk of money........ Because it is a showhome, they want the view to show and the drapes stay to the side, so there was only a width of fabric along the side of each window.
The top 17 feet or so were out of a light beige, with the bottom 3-4 feet in a contrasting darker color. More practical with our sheepies. The darker fabric started even with the top of the sofa. Sounds weird, but it was gorgeous.
Lisa, what about something like these? It's a nice neutral with a stripe pattern, with a dark stripe to bring in the darkness of the furniture, but light to lighten up the room...

No, I meant curtains, like in a movie theater. I think it would be very dramatic! Definitely not blinds. You need curtains to make an entrance. ;)
Maybe something like this?

If privacy and light control is not an issue I would leave the window without anything on it. If you need to you can simply chose something for the patio doors or if there isn't an issue with privacy or light with those leave those with nothing on them as well. It seems a shame to cover those beautiful windows.
Actually, if privacy isn't an issue, then for night time, you could light up the area outside so that you don't have to look at a big black hole in your wall.
No privacy is not an issue there, but we do need something we can close up in Winter as it is a cold room and we get a lot of chill off the window, so it helps to keep the room warm. :D

Here is the top of that mega window. Taken from upstairs.

So that is the problem, trying to imagine something in a pattern or colour in vast expance when the curtains are closed. :?

Barney1 the striped one look interesting. I am off again today to look at some more fabric samples, hubby hated the ones I had yesterday. So stripes and neutral might try some of them today and see.
It is a beautiful window. :D I am no help at all. I'm terrible at choosing window treatments. I think that's the hardest part of the room to coordinate.
OK here is a sample that I seem to like, see what hubby thinks tonight.

Opinions please on this one, bearing in mind that all the furniture in the room is plain and fairly neutral as is the walls and floor, so can you all visualise this sample Mega sized :? been hours in the curtain place today so my vision is zig zaggy at the moment and I definately hate decorating now.

Here it is up against the couch.

Here is a close up of the sample

Oh and this one was from yesterday, YUK I think I was having a 70's moment.  Or getting old and confused.

What an absolutely GORGEOUS room.

I am very "anti-curtain", I have removed the curtains from every window possible and replaced them with a valance and blind (where necessary-like the bedroom). I LOVE the wide open feeling and have no curtains in my living room or dining room.

Of course I live out in the BOONIES where privacy isn't a problem.
I am anti curtain too Ginny, most of the time the curtains are open as we have a fab view across the hill, but in winter we do need to close up of a night time as it is a great summer room but hard to keep warm in winter. We have underfloor heating there but with the open floor plan & high ceiling, we also have a gas heater there too for back up & warmth.

They are coming soon for a measure and quote 8O So I hope this one is the one for the Mega Window. At least hubby approved, he did not at the start when I showed him, but after a few comments from others (girl power) on the sample I gradually talked him around to it. 8)
I can't decorate at all, and have no artistic sense in how to put a room together. Colors, fabrics etc all elude me.
I do know that I like simple, light, earth tones, neutral, uncluttered. LOL I only have curtains up where I have to, and blinds on some windows.
For me to choose curtains I'd have to go to a store with a showroom so I could see them actually up on display...
To heck with all that, when we buy a new house and it needs decorating I'll just have to have a few of our fashionable forum members come for a visit LOL
That is a beautiful room! If you want privacy, but also the light, you could go with a shade that would cover the bottom part of the windows, but then leave the top open. (If that makes any sense.) A deep red would really match the brick, but for a lighter look, a nice tan would be nice, and also let in light.

Okay, something to the effect of this.

Lisa I just found this post and wanted to tell you your not alone on your
'big window dilemma' . :?

I also have a 'wall of windows' I call it. (pictures below)
If it makes you feel any better I love to decorate and still I will sit and stare at these windows and not know what to do...LOL

I have put some shades at the bottom level windows for night time privacy, but in the day I pull them up.

I seen your pictures and I love your house ! :hearts:
Seeing that you have a beautiful brick floor and the brick wall I would say to try and find a 'light neutral non-pattern fabric' for your windows.
I love the fabrics you showed but with that much fabric and the mortar lines in the brick floor and wall you may get to busy. Just a idea. :lmt:

Good luck !

Oh and isn't fun to wash the buggers!

Looking at the second photo you posted, where it looks black. I see light drapes, similar to what you have with vertical stripes. Either one or several of the shades of color to match your brick.

If you want to really get fancy, have someone make your drapes with the same view of your "open" window, so when the drapes are closed you'll still have the fabulous view!
mouthypf
OMG Bandaa...that's a gorgeous window!!!! Lisa I also love your home very much!

I still also vote for staying one color neutral (beige) or sheers with outer shader of a deeper tone for the cold months.

Marianne and the boys
Wow antionette, fantastic Mega Window, actually like the blinds and not covering the whole window.

Geez you are making me rethink mine now lol :lmt: With a 3/4 cover up now, that looks great, geez thanks alot, now back to the curtain place AGAIN, they do blinds as well  Or maybe a curtain but not right to the top of the window :? :lmt:

Cleaning is a buggar, but I have a cute window man that comes in to do them a few times a year, not a bad service, watching him scramble up the ladder. 8)
I say go for whatever the cute window guy will put up!!! My vote!

Marianne and the boys
You should see his butt  Who cares about window furnishings, as long as he keeps cleaning them, the view is great. 8)

Then I suggest you get window coverings that get dusty frequently. :lmt:

Marianne and the boys
I know whose houses I want to visit!! beautiful homes!!!
Thanks Everyone for the compliments on my windows ! :D

Lisa keep us posted (of coarse with pictures) on what you decide to do.
I feel like we have our own version of 'Trading spaces' going on here....(I love it ) :D

Now to the very important question :lmt: 'Lisa will your window man like to come visit Nashville Tennessee?' LOL.........

I definitely agree with Marianne " window coverings that get dusty frequently" ...LOL
