Trimming

Hi. I just got my two pups sheepies last friday. They love to play in our backyard. I always clean their paw before taking them inside the house, i trimmed their hair in between their paw and along the side of their feet just to eliminate getting dirt and mud. Is that ok? I was been told that i should not do that cause it serves protection on their feet. I just trimmed them anyway. Please advice.

Actually, you SHOULD trim the hair between the paw pads. If left untrimmed it will grow quite long, they won't have any traction on flooring, but most of all the hair between the paw pads can become matted and be painful. The hair will also trap dirt and moisture - trapped moisture can be harmful to that sensitive skin between the paw pads.

We use electric clippers and trim it right down to the skin between the pads, then use scissors to trim around the foot so there is as little of his top-foot hair touching the ground. You can also use scissors to just trim the hair so it is flush (flat) with the pads. If you do this, just also be sure to comb the hair between the pads to avoid tangles that can lead to mats.

Don't worry if your trim job doesn't look the prettiest - as long as it's functional and helps keep their paws cleaner, it's good for you and them.

It's wonderful that you are starting this young, so they will get used to it and not be too ticklish.
Here is an excellent post with photo examples of how to trim the hair flush with the pad.
