FOOD SURVEY

What kind? How much? How often? What time?

I only ask because to help fight walters food aggression I've been hand feeding him and I had to change everything around and I'm a little worried that its not enough! (although now that he's shaved I see my boy isn't as skinny as I thought...)

walter now eats once a day at 5
he gets 2.5 cups of dry pedigree lamb with rice and half a can of wet pedigree lamb and rice.
he gets 4 treats in the morning (1 from each person as we leave) to make sure hes not hungry.
does this sound like enough for a near 80lb 1 year old?

im very curious about everyone elses feeding schedules!

We free feed. I have found that works the best for us. I know that you are working on aggression so I know that might now work for you. How is Walter doing these days as far as home goes? Has he tried to bite you or your dad anymore? Jack and Annabelle don't eat that much either, not for how big they are. We feen Nutro and it seems they don't eat as much of it. Go figure. I hope Walter is doing great! Stormi and co.
I think you may be feeding Walter slightly a bit too much but it really depends on how active he is.

Newman always weighed btw 80-85 lbs his whole life and we fed him only once a day, 2 cups dry & a half a can wet. He got a large milkbone in the morning and 1 at night before bed. He had a pretty good exercise regimen of about 1/2 hr - 1 hr of running and playing or walking briskly almost every day of the week. The last year of his life he became less active because he would tire easily and we actually gave him more treats throughout the day.

Since I've read this forum and first heard about bloat here, I feed 6 month old Frank 2x's a day to split up the day. He's already eating more than Newman did... 1.25 cups dry- 1/2 can - 1 tablespoon of yogurt mixed with water in the morning and 1.25 cups at night. Plus lots of little treats throughout the day since he's training.

The breeder said to let Frank eat as much as he wants until he reaches his year birth date and then cut back to regular portions and mix with canned string beans to help fill the food out so he stays trim.
Dancer is free fed, I fill her bowl whenever it is empty.
She is on Iams puppy and Wellness Super5 Puppy mix. I mix the kibble and keep it all in a huge ProPlan tin, LOL. I'd say she eats about 3 cups a day on most days, but some days she barely touches it and other days I have to re fill it in the evening. I'm hoping I can still free feed when Sky gets here, but I'm guessing I will have to do meal feedings with Sky for at least a few weeks since she is eating kibble wet down. Sky is currently on Eukanuba Large Breed puppy formula, so I'll be buying a bag of that to mix in with the other stuff for a little while. Dancer is in excellent shape even though she has never been a big eater, I don't know how much she weighs now but she is solid , great muscle tone, can't feel any ribs. She also gets a few marrowbones as potty training treats, and I use the Wellness kibble as training treats.
I agree - I think that may be too much too! I'm not an expert though and it would depend on his frame. If he's a little overweight - I'd cut back on the food (or treats). You could try giving him carrots for treats in the morning - or if you feel he's hungry - you can add things to the kibble that are filling - but not fattening (i.e. can of green beans).

With Walter's aggression issues - you should look into the Protein content of the food he's eating - they have liked higher protein diets with aggression and recommend an 18% protein content.

I "free feed" to - but I wish I didn't. With 3 dogs - I can't determine who's eating how much - and Brittney is overweight - but it's hard to monitor how much she eats because of free feeding.

Blue gets 1.5 cups of Eukanuba Puppy Food for Large Breeds twice a day. I don't free feed. Since she was 8 weeks old, I've been putting down her food and taking it up around 15 mins later- once she's stopped eating but before she starts playing with it. Now, I don't even have to take it up, she just eats it and I have a very good idea of exactly how much to give her.

Another thing is, Blue shares the house with our very aggressive JR Terrier. She's food, toy, space and attention aggressive so Blue knows to allow her to eat first. Blue isn't at all aggressive. You can literally put your hand into her mouth and take the food she's eating (long story!!). I've also cut out (practically) all of her human food snacks. At first, it was cute to see a Sheepie beg for Chilli Heatwave Doritos and all my family did it. I found that it was getting hard to monitor how much junk she was having so I've cut her back to just her food (and a very occasional MilkyBar- cos I'm a sucker).

On another topic- I noticed that Blue would get very sluggish after eating. I think this is because she's so big, she'd often lie down to eat from her bowl. I've now elavated it so not only does she have to stand up, she also eats more slowly and isn't as sluggish.
Bump :D
I'd like to see more replies to this thread, since I am trying to decide what food to keep Dancer and Sky on. I'm interested in what others feed their OES but also if their sheepies have digestive problems or not, since it seems to very common. Dancer doesn't, but apparently Sky didn't react too well when the breeder tried them on a different food. I'm anxious to see how she handles the switch when I get her home, though I bought a bag of what the breeder is feeding now, eukanuba, and the switch will be done very very slowly.
Surprise! My 2 OES eat the same amount as my 3 Great Pyrs: 2 1/2 - 3 cups per day depending on the outside temperature and their activity level. More food in colder weather when they spend more than a few hours outside . the food is given in 2 feedings. I feed Senior Nutro mixed with Pedigree's new senior food (sorry I don't remember the name). Cookies: well Simone gets too many and has the padded ribs to show. Generally no more than 2-3 of the large size per day.

A 4th Great Pyr just came back to me after almost 5 years (a rescue who has been in 3 other homes). She needs to cut her weight in half!!! Fat dog! Vet said no more than 1050 calories per day.......with her lack of movement due to fat, I've got her on 750 cals per day and she is loosing...a pound or two a week.
Wow! 6 big dogs! Sounds like heaven to me! You must have a big house.... how do they all get along? I need a bigger house! Dancer already herds us, she likes us all to be in the same room, lol, so I can imagine what it will be like with two! I can't wait! :D
For a few days it was actually 7 dogs! We had a sheepdog rescue. He's off to his new home and family, so we are back to 6.

NO WAY did we every plan to have more than 2-3 dogs at a time. Well...... Good thing the county and a limit of 6 per household!!

We have 2 acres, one for us, one for the dogs. They have the grass, we have the weeds. Everyone, but the new dog sleeps inside at night to allow the neighbors some rest. The new dog used to be inside when she was with us before, but right now his having incontinence problems due to her gross weight and possible bladder stone. House size is average one story.....I don't do stairs.

It's a real zoo here. When these guys pass on, they are aged 9,8,7,7,5,5 I hope we have the courage to say, WHOA!!!!

Becareful with the increased house size........look what happened to us, LOL!
We feed Mop Iams for large puppies. Usually 1cup 3 times a day, if she is hungry, I give her a .5 cup extra. She tends to leave food over and I take it away after about 15-20 minutes. She definatly loves her stacks, especially her Greenies. And any other human food she can beg out of my husband. He is such a mush. :D
Marley how do you find her stools are on Iams? And her growth? That is mostly what I feed Dancer currently, but I am planning to change it because they changed their formula and it is mostly fillers and junk now. But Dancer is in excellent condition, so it's hard to believe it is mostly crap food.
Oh no, really!? I've been feeding her Iams for only a little while, and so far so good. She was on Purina, and our friend who is a vet told us to switch to Iams because its better quality food. What am I gonna do now? Just bought a 20lb bag of the stuff. :?
LOl, if she is doing well on it then don't worry about it. Iams is better than say purina dog chow, and I think most purina foods use a lot of corn, Iams does too now, but not as much. I am switching Dancer to Wellness Super5 puppy mix, but it is soooo expensive, 65 dollars for a 33lbs bag. Ridiculous really. I think I may just mix it half and half with Iams. I also have eukanuba for Sky for a little while, so I need to figure out what to feed them so I don't have to switch them too often. Apparently Costco has one of the best foods out there, it is Kirkland chicken and rice or lamb and rice, made by Diamond. It is almost identical to wellness foods but is 1/3 the price. I will probably switch to that when they are older, but there is no puppy formula in stock at the Costo near here, so I can't yet.
Costco?! Really!! We have that in US and I had a membership to it, but it expired. I might have to renew it when its time to switch her to an adult formula. 7 months is too yourng to switch, hah? I thought that you can change them to adult food at 6 months. I will do what's best for Mop Head, ofcourse. So, when is a good time to switch to adult dog food?
I could probably switch Dancer, though puppy food is for up to 12 months, most do recommend switching to adult food any time after 6 months depending on the growth and health of the dog, but since Sky is going to be here there is no point switching until the're both old enough.
We were on Iam's large breed for pups. I have heard when they decided to let Walmart start selling Iams, that they changed the ingredients to less quality things. I don't know how true that is. I changed, mostly because of the corn.......and the Nutro rep at the dog show made a lot of sense about thier food. It is a little higher, but they haven't had the runny stool like they used to get.....well unless they decide to raid the trash. LOL One of Nutro bags has an OES on the front, but I think the kind we use has a Rott on it. They also like the Nutro dental for treats. Stormi and co.
Dancer has never had runny stool, that's one of the things I like about Iams. But it's the corn that bothers me. Wellness is all natural stuff, humane grade ingredients, and Dancer loves it, but it is sooo expensive and I wonder if it is too rich.
Marley. You might not have to renew that Costco memership. The Big R/ Ranch and Home store if you have one near you sells some Diamond brand products. I'm not positive but I believe we paid $15-$20 for a large bag. (we used it at the shelter if a dog was really under weight) Not sure if they have the Kirkland but it's worth checking into if there is a store near you.
Uuummm, what is the big R? I don't think we have it here.
I don't either, but then again I don't even have a costco. LOL I have a Sam's club, I think that must be like Costco. Stormi
We can buy Nutro at TSC Tractor Supply Co. I don't know if you have them, but Nutro is cheaper there, so they might carry what you are looking for. Stormi and co.
It's a ranch, feed, hardware store. All kind of fun things. There is an awesome pair of low cut boots in the one near us that i've been drooling over for a few months. lol too much $$$ though
here is a list of the affiliates (sp) in New York State not sure if one is near you

They didn't sell it on line. Maybe they quit carring it. :(
I just switched my 3 over to flint river ranch kibble for adult and puppies (thanks Grace) They seen to be doing OK and they really like it.

Wow, we DO have it here! I never heard of this store before. Strange, cause I am always looking for a good deal! LOL I will check it out. They don't seem to have this brand online, but maybe they do in the store? Thanks!!!!!!!! :) :) :)
Here is a link to diamond pet foods site

Thanks Willowsprite, I didn't think of that.
Marley you could do what I do. When a friend goes to Costco I give them money and have them pick up stuff for me. Usually yeast It's way cheaper than the grocery store. LOL

The Big city is 132 miles away. we make a habit of seeing if someone needs something before we go. You learn who your friends are that way. :D
cher
WOW! You ARE good! What do you think about this brand? I am weary of changing her food again. I don't know. Gonna go to the pet food store and see how much they are, and check out the label. So many brands out there and all say that their food is the best. *sigh*
Maggy eats California Natural (all natural, human grade ingredients)

1 C. in AM
1 C. at dinner time

She also eats fruits, veggies and, of course, Greenies! ;)

I have an OCD, I believe, as I research everything to the Nth degree. I went from Eukanuba to Nutro to Solid Gold before finally settling in with California Natural.

IAMS is not a premium food, nor is Eukanuba which is made by IAMS. IAMS also participates in inhumane animal testing and is currently under investigation.

I have a list of premium foods if anyone is interested. They are more costly, but the amount of money saved in vet bills, the amount of food needed, condition of skin and coat, etc., all evens out in the end.
Thanks for providing info on the Costco brand. We've been using the Wellness brand and I'll have to check this out. I am always so concerned about feeding Maddie the "right" dog food. We've tried several premium brands out there and she's only taken a mild interest in the Wellness SuperMix. I think she's now getting bored with it. Even the parmesan cheese that I've been sprinkling on it doesn't seem to have the same effect. I've been reading alot about Paul Newman's new dog food but haven't been able to find it yet. I'm wondering if anyone out there has tried it yet. If interested, here is a link to the product information - www.newmansownorganics.com/pet/what/
It sounds interesting.
