Limping :-(

I got home and immediately took Bing to the dog park. He was a good boy and walked nicely to the gate. I opened the gate and told him to go play and almost instantaneously noticed he was limping. He never even ran!

He won't put any weight on his right rear leg. He never yelped, doesn't mind if I touch it, and didn't want to leave the park, but he has a very strong limp and holds it in the air whenever possible. Nothing in his pads - everything looks normal . . .

He's sleeping (on the bad leg side) on the floor right now.

I'm trying not to freak out, but I'm on my own this weekend as Ian brought his youth group skiing . . .

Of course you've check the paw for any cracks in the pad, or any hair pulling on the inside, and any toenail issues, simple stuff like that.

Perhaps he just did a split on the kitchen floor while you were out and it's a little sprain, and will be better tomorrow or the next day. I wouldn't freak out just yet. You can always freak out on Tuesday.

Thank you - the support is wonderful. I am really trying to take it easy. It's hard when I see him trying to walk but I'm going to take a couple of deep breaths . . .
He probably just pulled it. Try not to panic just yet. If you can handle the leg pretty easily without any yelping then I would just wait it out for a couple of days.

I've been freaking out a little here in NJ. We have a couple inches of snow with a strong coating of ice on top so you can stand on top of the snow. I can't even walk on it without slipping. All the dogs want to do is run around & play in the snow but I'm just watching their legs slip out from under them. I think I might have to let them go out one at a time until it melts.
It is really great that you are aware, attentive and noticed early but I agree -- don't freak out. Lots of things can cause temporary limping. Just watch it and see if if starts to get better or worse.

Deb -- for yor own safety, can you find Yak Trax at REI or someplace? At least you could remain surefooted. They have been enormously helpful with all the ice and snow here.

Ah the good old days, when I could walk.
Emily crate him and let him have total rest, take him out on a lead to potty etc and confine him again. If no improvement in a day or so, take him to be seen by a vet.

This way total rest and no aggrivation if he has pulled or strained his leg.

Keep us posted on how he is going.

xxLisa
Aww, poor Bingley! :( I agree, just keep an eye on him, try to keep him quieter. Sometimes I think it hurts us more to see them in pain than the pain actually hurts them!
He's young, sometimes they do move too quick and pull something. I remember Clyde doing this once and I had the same reaction as you. We did what Lisa suggested and by the next morning, he was back to normal. I hope Bingley has a similar outcome.
Poor sweetie. Let us know how he's doing tomorrow Emily.
Emily, don't stress out too much. I agree with what everyone else is saying, in that it is probably something minor. I hope Bingley is feeling better tommorow.
Thank you all so much for your support - this place is just wonderful!

I have been keeping him nice and quiet but he doesn't seem to want to move a lot anyway. He ate his dinner on three feet with that back one held up in the air. . . :(

It's killing me but I think it helps that he isn't yelping.
Emily if there is no improvement by tomorrow and he still is not putting that foot to the ground then take him to the vets. It could be a ligament, hopefully not the cruciate. He might need some anti-inflammetrys, with total rest to help there and also leaving things for too long could lead to permanent damage with there movement, if he is not showing any improvement and putting that foot to the ground by tomorrow then off to the vets  .

I would not muck around with him for too long there.

I hope he shows some improvement there in the next 12-24 hours ...
Hi Emily,

Can't offer much more than what's already been said. Just to let you know I'm keeping you and Bingley in my thoughts. Give him a belly rub from me and kisses from the boys.

Marianne and the boys
I hope Bingley stops gimping soon. We just got Chewie over a pull (we think the splits in the front end) and it took almost 3 weeks for the limp to be totally gone. We rested and did walking. Nothing more strenuous. He actually seemed stiff and sore after laying for naps, etc. He was kind of bummed and he missed all the fun stuff he normally does. But, he did heal up with no medications needed or any setbacks.
Hugs to Bingley - get better!
Tomorrow get him to the vet, if he shows no improvement for sure.

Normally a sprain will begin to work it's way out as time passes. It has been over 3 hours, and he is not putting it down at all.Sounds to me like there is something amiss.

You may even want to call them tonite to leave a mesaage, so they can expect you.
I agree with Lisa, Nicole, etc. A bit of limping is one thing but actually holding it up in the air seems more serious to me. Don't freak! But do find out. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Maybe you can send Bing over here to recover with me. Wishful thinking. . .

Thanks! It's Saturday and after a night of rest there is no improvement. He tries not to even let his paw touch the ground - he is hopping on three legs. My vet is out for the weekend so I'm going to try another one a bit later in the day.

Oh, Emily.

Poor Bingley and poor you, with a hurt baby....I really hope it is nothing serious, but please get him looked at as soon as you can. I know you are going to take care of your baby.

HUGS!
:( Poor sheepie.

I agree with the others limping is one thing refusing to put the foot down another. I hope you are able to get ahold of a vet and have it checked out.

Tasker will often get up from a long nap with a hitch in his step for a few hours. But when Ty refused to bear weight on his leg at all it turned out to be something significant.

Please keep us posted!
Update: After not getting through to the vet I called the next-best person, an incredibly knowledgeable sheepie owner/breeder/handler who happens to own one of Bing's litter mates as well. She has also advised me to keep him quiet through Monday. If he shows any abnormal signs in addition to this we should immediately bring him in to a vet, but everything that he is doing now seems to be pointing to a pulled muscle. If there is no improvement before Monday, or if anything gets worse before then, we will immediately bring him to an emergency clinic open on weekends. (My vet is out until Monday).

Right now he is laying down (on the 'bad' side) and having a snooze. I appreciate you all!
Your vet is going to be working on President's Day?
I HOPE SO, since he isn't a government employee or a dead president he should be at work!!!!!

At least that is what I told MY PATIENTS when they asked if they got a holiday from Rehab!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck. I hope by Monday that Bing will be just fine...up and moving about.

Give him a belly rub for me (and sneek in a few treats).
UPDATE!!!!

I found a vet (who's clinic I recognized) who is also open today. I decided to go down and see if we can pinpoint Bingley's hurt.

He has a very bruised and very swollen toe. It is the one closest to his body on that back right foot. The vet didn't think it was fractured, but if it persists through Tuesday without improvement she would like us to X-ray. Sounds good to me! Bing is on antibiotics for the swelling and a low pain killer to help him feel a bit better.

The best thing we can do for him we're already doing: keeping him quiet, but it is so nice to know what is going on.

The vet thinks that he could have been stung, bruised it on something sharp, or somehow twisted it.

BTW - the best thing about this vet was that she praised on Bingley as if he was her own. The second best thing was that it was only $45.00 - including the medicine! WOW - we found a great new place!
That's great new Emily!!!

Poor little pumpkin.. got a brusies toe.. give him a smooch and a hug from me..

Poor fellow!! It's nice to know what you're dealing with now and he has some meds to help with the pain. Just keep him still and quiet and he'll be feeling better soon. :)
Phew......Breathing a big sigh of relief that you were able to get him looked at. Hopefully no broken bones, but some good drugs will help him feel better. :phew:

Maybe he can go and recouperate with Val! Maybe she will share her ice-pack with him... They can both sit around in la-la land... :D
I was thinking about Bingley while I had doofy Fred out at the dog run filled with snow and ice. He was running around like a mad man and I kept thinking, "Hope he doesn't pull something."

I am glad that Bing was attended to and has medicine to ease his pain. You should probably make a strong drink for yourself, kick up your feet and relax.
Great news!! Toes are easily treatable!!! :)
:phew: So glad you took him to a vet, sounds like a wonderful one too, get well soon Bing, we are thinking of you.
Emily and Bingley - So glad to hear about the bruised toe - we agree with the others - so much much better than a torn cruciate or horrible other complication.

I 2nd the idea of putting your feet up and relaxing now. Perhaps a little chocolate while taking a bath??

Mick wishes Bingley to be back out romping in no time.

Judy & Mick
Ouch, an outer toe! That's more difficult than an inner. The inside toes are somewhat protected by their neighbors. Keep the little guy quiet, wrapping probably would be eaten off, this is a time recovery......time and quiet. poor baby.

Many years ago I accidently stepped on Shane's foot and fractured a toe...his toe. He never yelped, just limped until we got him to the vet for an xray. Mommy still feels bad and that was.........15 or so years ago  He was such a good boy.
I think it's an inner toe:

I mean inner within a paw, like number 2 or 3.....not inner against the body. By your def though, that is truly an INNER toe
I hope your Bingley starts feeling better. The new vet sounds nice and helpful!
I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I have no idea what you mean by inner toe and outer toe. LOL

I guess I don't know toes!

Look at a paw. The 2 toes in the center are the inner toes. The 2 toes on either side of them are the outer.
:D :D

Or:

pretend the smilies are a set of 4 toes. the inner are laughing at you....:
8O   8O

sorry, I couldn't resist. :D
Gotchya.
Poor sweet Bingley, Get well soon! Great Mom to get him to the vet so quick.

That is hilarious!!! You're all right: it is his innermost, outside toe!
  Glad you found out the cause. I am laughing at the inner and outer toes descriptions.
This is one of those classic good news-bad news situations. The bad news it that Bingley is hurt. The good news is that you've found a new vet for the future!
That's true! Finding a good vet is hard. You usually start by dipping a toe in the water...

...Done!
Bingley seems to be doing much better. He's placing his weight on his foot and limps only when he tries to do too much, such as break into a trot (he thinks I'm nuts when I don't let him)!

He's signed up for his show in two weeks so I'm hoping he is completely better within a week or so! He's been getting a lot of special treats that he can lay down and chew on, but it is REALLY HARD to keep him quiet this long. This is definitely the least amount of exercise he has ever had.

Thank you so much for caring!
I just saw this. Poor Bingley! I've broken my pinky toe and it HURT, so I can imagine the poor little guy's pain...I'm glad that he seems to be feeling a little better though...
Poor Bingley! I hope he's feeling better soon. It's pretty tough to keep a sheepie quiet when they want to be playing...
