my oes x won't eat unless I stand by him

Hi
I wanted to say that i am new here in this forum and I love it, I have learned a lot here. Now here is my little problem. My oes mix won't eat unless I am standing right by him. The minute I walk away he follows me and stops eating. Also, he will eat half of his bowl at night and eat the rest the next morning only if either me or my husband are next to him. I literally sit down by him so that he will eat. Any advise ?

My Barney does the same thing. It used to bother me, especially on mornings when I'd be in a rush to go to work and not have the time to wait around and watch him eat. So I'd leave and his bowl would be the same level when I returned that night.

I'd say, unless your dog has some physical condition that you need him to eat, just let it go. He'll eat when he's hungry...he knows the food is there so it's not like he will starve himself.

We've had Barney for almost 2 years now and for probably a good year and a half he'd refuse to eat unless we were right there. Now he's much better and still prefers us to be there, but he'll eat on his own now...but I'll still sometimes come home and find his breakfast in his bowl in the evening.
Thank you so much for replying. The morning time is not really an issue for me since my husband takes care of it at that time. It is at night when I am ready to go to bed then he starts eating after I take him out, so I have to wait for him. He is very healthy but I am afraid he will lose weight if he doesn't eat. He is very spoiled and he lets me know that he won't eat unless I am there. I'll just leave the bowl there then and see if that works. Thank you
Tasker won't eat unless you are in the room with him. I have noticed that if I feed him, then go into the living room to watch TV or something he will wait til I COME BACK to the kitchen to eat, even if it is HOURS. So I've gotten in the habit of feeding him while I fix dinner.
Bosley was like that for the longest time...He would only eat if we were in the room.

Then we got Dixie....Funny how a bit of competition will suddenly make the food disappear quickly... He just chows it all down, now, just so SHE won't get any...
I wouldn't worry. If he has no other health problem signs, vomitting, lethargic, dirrarea, I think he may just be "testing" you out to see if he can get you to do what he wants! Don't worry. he'll eat when he's hungry. A dog will not starve himself when there is food right there for him!

If it is a problem for you, you might want to try taking the food away - eaten or not - about half and hour after you set it down. he'll learn that if he doesnt eat it himself alone, he'll have to wait for the next meal...Butleaving it there all day is no biggy either. My first OES was free fed that way. Just might make house breaking more difficult.

Good luck.
Thank you, I will try that
Sam eats where ever I am....she takes a mouthful of kibble and then goes to where I am near, spits out her kibble and then eats it. Needless to say, I do find kibble in the strangest places. She's 3...and has been doing that since we adopted her at 6 months....
Yup, Pogo does the same thing. I always feel bad if I don't get back in the evening until late (10pm or so), because he will wait to eat until I am in the kitchen with him.
In the morning he follows me aroung the house until I leave for work, so I started giving him 2 large dog biscuits as a snack to get him thru the day. He LOVES the dog biscuits in the morning and gets really excited!
It makes me feel better knowing that he has had something to eat more than once a day.
Yep... Buddy is like that too. He has been like that for the six years I've had him.

I had a vet tell me it is because he is a social eater. Actually, Buddy is very considerate and will usually wait for me to get something to eat before he'll start to eat. We are a family and are supposed to eat together after all :)

Alan
ahh good boy Buddy
