Dead pets give birth to diamond ring

LONDON (AFP) - Sue Rogers will never be without her dead dogs and cat after having a diamond ring made from their ashes.

Rogers, from Devon in southwest England, paid 3,200 pounds (4,800 euros, 6,238 dollars) for the ring made from carbon extracted from the ashes of Lucky, an old English sheepdog, a golden retriever cross called Sam and a tom cat, Patch, a newspaper said Saturday.

"I am delighted with my ring as it means I can have my pets with me at all times," Rogers told the Daily Mail newspaper.

"My animals meant the world to me and even though they are gone they are still with me. It's a beautiful ring and such a brilliant idea."

Rogers, 44, had previously kept the ashes of her pets on her mantelpiece until she learnt of LifeGem UK, which makes diamonds from the remains of humans and pets.

A small amount of carbon from each set of ashes was heated at temperatures of 3,000 degrees Celsius to help make a rough diamond.

The stone was then polished and certified before being set in a gold band.

That's actually really neat.... too bad the diamond pictured in the article looks terrible. :?

Wonder if you can produce better clarity and colour than that....
I wonder if that color was their intention-- it's definitely a lot cheaper. You can get diamonds in many colors but white are the strongest and, generally, most popular. I wanted a black diamond for my engagement ring but they're the most brittle and James didn't want people to think he cheaped out, lol.
thats a mixture of really creepy and really cool

that was my thought too :D

Ditto
I have heard of many people that have done this with their spouses remains. Never heard of them doing it with a pets before, but it's all the same.. Weird!!!
I'm still trying to work out the Pounds to Aussie Dollars.

CRIKEYS 8O
I can't imagine the $$ either 8O A photo and lock of hair is cheaper.
Oh different strokes for different folks I guess...I love this idea!

Still have all my critters ashes and may consider doing this someday..if I win the lotto. :D

Marianne and the boys
I had to laugh when I read this....b/c as a funeral director, cremation is growing in popularity...i've had plenty of questions about making diamonds out of cremains, but no one has actually done it. Most generally we cremate pets and the owners buy an urn, or we can make charms out of a pet paw print or nose print....We don't own a pet crematory, but more and more people call about pet services everyday...we even occasionally sell a child casket for a pet.....

Someone sent me the link to LifeGem after my daughter passed away. She wasn't cremated though. I think it's a neat concept, but I'm not sure about it.
