my new puppy is sick

Just picked up Abby at 9 weeks ( a little early, I know) and she won't eat, has diahrrea and today she vomited her water. Should I take her to the vet or adopt a wait and see attitude? Her nose is warm and dry and she seems lethargic. Help

Please go to your vet ASAP...better safe than sorry. How long have you had her home? It could be a change from the food she is used to or it could be something serious. I'd err on the side of caution.
Let us know what you find out.
It's not unusual for them to experience these symptoms with changing environments. Still, I would go ahead and take her to the vet to be sure everything is okay. My motto is better safe than sorry. :?
Vet too. They can get dehydrated or worse fast. Better to be safe and take her in. Good luck and let us know how your baby is later.
Absolutely would take her to the VET ASAP, it may be nothing but young pups can go downhill FAST. GOOD LUCK and keep us posted.
Definitely the vet. At that age, so much can go wrong and you're better safe than sorry.
the vet said the test was positive for parvo, she is now in the hospital, we hope for the best. The breeder is in denial. What can I do, we have no w ritten contract
I am so sorry to hear that, I hope your little pup will be OK.

You need a letter from the Vet attending your pup, documented proof that the pup has parvo, if you only just recently got the pup, well obviously it contracted it before coming home to you. If anything happens and the pup does not survive, you can then go after the breeder with documented proof and compensation.

Is the breeder you got the pup from a registered breeder?

I hope your baby will come through this alright. :(
yes,the breeder is registered and has papers, but denies that any other of her puppies are sick. I am concerned about the puppies she has sent home. She said that two new owners reported coccicidy(sp) and were treated with Alban. I am concerned that they, too, may have parvo.
Do I have any recourse for the medical bills?
Poor Abby :( I hope she recovers fully and quickly. If you know any of the people who have her littermates you may want to contact them ASAP, both to alert them and see if they also have parvo. Obviously you can't count on your breeder to do the right thing
Thank you for the well wishes. The vet called us tonight to update on Abby. She has started vomitting and is still "squirting" but they are watching her closely.
You sure do, whether your pup survives or not. Keep all the vet bills and get that letter from the vet too.

If the breeder is off the OESCA breeder referal then you need to report that to them. If not on the OESCA referal then the AKC can be contacted and a complaint made to them.
sdolly, are you in the US?
hi

i hope your puppy wil be ok. :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:

wendy and gismo
yes, I am in Arizona. Have any of you had an experience with parvo? This is my only one and I am very worried. I have had 5 other oes and this worries me. Won't the rest of her litter have it?
I am so sorry you are dealing with PARVO, but relieved that your pup is where the best care can be given.

If you have gotten the pup from a backyard breeder you may be out of luck as far as recourse goes. A responsible brreder would be as concerned (or more) about the health of you pup. Without a contract you may be out of luck. I would check the laws in your state to see if they will help you out.

Most importantly I hope the pup is ok. Parvo could have come from the breeders home or could have been picked up in your yard, I have been told it can even be carried into the house on peoples shoes.

Good Luck!!
Puppies can and do survive parvo:

www.oes.org/page2/9025~Parvo_update.html

I would assume your others dogs have been vaccinated so they should be fine.
sdolly, there are several of us here in AZ. Please register on the forum and send me a PM - I'd like to know who the breeder is for future reference.

I'm glad your puppy is under a vet's care now and hope she will be better soon! Sue
same goes for me!! ^^^^^Sue and I met on this site and we get our dogs together on a regular basis....when your baby is feeling better, we'd like to get together!!

ps...my next door neighbors puppy had parvo and lived another 7 happy yrs!!
Hi SDolly:

I am so sorry to hear about your new puppy's illness.

I, too, have just adopted a new puppy from a breeder in Arizona. She had two litters (one a week older than the other). The conditions these pups were in were horrible, but we could not stand the thought of leaving our little guy there... so we rescued him. We brought him home (to Colorado) and he got sick the next day with the same symptoms. as your baby We took him to the vet ASAP and he is in the hospital on fluids and antibiotics. If we got our puppies from the same breeder, then there's something you might want to ask your vet... these puppies were vaccinated for Parvo about 2 weeks ago. My vet said that a test for parvo right nowm would most likely show "false positive" because of the recent parvo vaccine. Our little Elliott has Coccidia and this may be causing the symptoms, too. We just don't know. All I do know is that he's sick and it's heartbreaking to see him suffer. I would be happy to talk to you personally (via email or phone) so that we can see if we got our babies from the same breeder. I am new to this wonderful forum, so I'm not sure if I can most my email address or not... so Ron, please forgive me if I do something wrong... but here goes... (e-mail address removed--use e-mail link below).

You and your baby are in my thoughts and prayers.
I am so sorry to hear about your little one too, I hope you and SDolly pups are going to be OK.

Thinking of you both & sending prayers and positive thoughts to you both.

SDolly register on the forum (it's free) then you can PM each other  .
Suzette from Colorado and I have just e-mailed and we got our puppies from the same breeder. I am extremely concerned. The breeder says today she took fecal samples from her litter to her vet and all were clear. Can coccidia be this toxic?
How very awful for you both. That woman should be shut down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm really sorry to hear about your guys pups

We had a similar situation just before Christmas... It's a tough time, that's for sure. Hang in there guys, keep saying your prayers and stay positive.

Best of luck and best wishes... Saying a prayer for ya!!!!
True or not, they ALWAYS say that, by the way.
We just got a call from the vet and there is no improvement. In fact, she seems to be fading and now the vet is concerned about liver damage. It breaks my heart as it looks like if there is no improvement tomorrow that we will have to let little abby go in peace. Suzette, I wish Elliot the best and I will be touch.
A sad and heavy hearted dolly.
Oh Dolly, I am so sorry :(
I'm so sorry. Not that it helps your poor pup, but I don't know how that breeder wouldn't want to be as helpful as she could and do everything to make sure her other pups were healthy. I'd be thanking you for bringing it to my attention. I really am sorry.
:hearts: Wishes and prayers that Abby is strong enough to fight this battle :hearts:
Please keep us updated on the progress of you two's pups. Wishing them all the best.
I'm so sorry.
I am very sorry about the pups and I feel for you both

Dolly -- this is so sad. Poor puppy. I have tremendous sympathy for what you are experiencing. That's really heartbreaking. :(
hi Dolly

i'm so sorry i still hope your pup can make it and the other puppy too

let us know how it goes :ghug:

:ghug:

wendy and gismo
i really feel for you both....I hope they get better soon
My heart is just breaking for SDolly and Abby. Sweet little baby girl... she's Elliott's sister. No puppy should have to go through this. I keep praying that she will show some signs of improvement.

Elliott is no better,no worse. He's still in the hospital on fluids... still can't/won't eat and has awful diarrhea. He's anemic and low on protein but his white blood cell count is normal as is his temp. He's a fighter and he's sending love and strength to his baby sister, Abby.

Thank you all so very much for your comforting words and prayers of support.
What a sad situation. I am so sorry. Poor puppy. Poor you. :(
My prayers are with Abby and Elliot. How sad.
Abby and Elliots big half sister sends her love and best wishes for quick get wells.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you....

xo,
Oh, how heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers are with both Abby and Elliott for a positive recuperation.

Ginny was right - that woman should be SHUT DOWN NOW!!! And to think she just had ANOTHER litter?? It's obvious she's only in it for the money.
Agreed.

Moderators - the owners of sick puppies can't post where they got them from to warn others??

Assuming they can't post the "breeder"s name publicly I urge anyone considering getting an Old English Sheepdog puppy from Arizona to please PM either of the puppy owners first and make sure you don't get a puppy from the same breeder.

This is just so sad. Poor puppies.
Don't worry Steph, we Arizonans have been talking behind the scenes.
Poor pups. Add us to the long list of folks sending prayers and good thoughts their way.

I agree with SheepieHeaven. I know that we need to keep the forum free from "breeder bashing", so to speak, but I wish there was a way to let people know where these pups came from, so others can avoid this heartache. JMHO.

Laurie
Dont worry I KNOW where they came from!!!! Sue does now too...pretty much everyone on here from the southwest knows who it is....or at least does now!
Has anyone heard how Abby and Elliott are doing? I can't stop thinking about them.
Ditto, I hope and keep praying these babies are going to make it. :(
Elliott Update:

Well, I have good news and bad news. Elliott definitely has Parvo. His White Blood Cell count plummeted from 10,000 to 2000. The virus is progressing so that now he has bloody diarrhea and he's still vomiting. We spent the majority of today with him at the Vet hospital. He was so happy to have us there. He especially liked cuddling up to Rog's "used" sock that I brought for him as a comfort aid.

THE GOOD NEWS is that Elliott is a fighter! We got him in for treatment at the very onset of this and he's had fluids and antibiotics, anti-vomit meds and anything else he's needed to help his little body fight this. We will be moving him to the big-time vet hospital tomorrow so he can spend the weekend in a 24/7, top-notch facility. The virus just needs to run its course, but we are very encouraged by how he's hanging in there.

A little humor in all of this... at least Rog thought it was funny... I'm not known for my singing voice. I was holding Elliott and talking to him and everything was fine. Then I felt compelled to serenade him with song and he immediately vomited all over. Rog won't ever let me forget that one!

I have not heard from SDolly since this morning, so I'm not sure how poor little Abby is doing. I pray that she's okay.

As for the breeder... I have contacted the proper authorities in Arizona and they will be paying this person an unannounced visit. I have posted a scathing review on the PuppyFind website. I'm just getting started! The breeder is still in denial despite Elliott and Abby's confirmed cases... how many more are out there? Not everyone can afford the enormous cost for the treatment of a parvo puppy. It just breaks my heart to think of the puppies that may be affected.

Thank you all for your kind words and concern... I will keep you posted.
Still crossing all fingers and the girls are crossing all four paws for you both still.

Thanks for the update on Elliot sound like he is a real fighter, keep fighting strongly Elliot, you can do it sweetie.

Hope you are going after the breeder for all the vet costs so far as well. I certainly would.

Hope Abby is doing better too

We will keep praying for both these babies.
I think this whole thing is absoultely disgusting! So glad you went to the authorities and reported this woman. However, you said you went to the Arizona authorities. Did you notice on her website, the address is Michigan???

I contacted my breeder who was the referral person for the OES Club and is still very active in the Club and told her what happened and asked her what else can be done. I see this vvery breeder is now announcing another litter ready for delivery...

Hope the little guys are okay. It breaks my heart to know they are so sick. Really this breeder needs to be known and closed up...Ron, can't you make an excpetion and allow the name of the breeder under these circumstances?

Good luck to the little puppies...My thoughts and prayers are with you all...
Her "real" address is down at the bottom of the website. She is definitely in Arizona!
We almost bought a puppy from this breeder before we knew what to look for. After talking to my sister in law (who used to breed and show dogs) we got worried and backed out of it. She said all the dogs had the hips certified but the mother was not even two yet and hadn't been. That and the father had fair hips. So who knows what you would have gotten in the mix.

The grown up dogs were all matted and the house smelled very doggie but not as you described in the review on puppy find. Must have gotten out of hand even more. We did get our deposit back which i was surprised about. I thought i was going to have to write it off as learning experience. Definatly a back yard breeder in my opinion and all that we saw at the house.

I do hope that your puppy gets better. Poor little thing. Darcy's Panda is one sweet girl so your puppy should be to. Best of wishes.

Oh and by the way.......do you think that I should say anything in the reviews on puppyfind about this lady as you did? We didn't buy one but did have a experience. Maybe more not so great reviews would help people not buy from her........?
The vet called this morning and our poor little girl passed away last night. I was at work and just lost it. I can't believe it. How could this woman have sold us sick puppies. When our vet called she was just as stunned, said Abby had the lowest white blood count she had ever seen. She also asked if they could open her up because there was so much biliruben in her urine that she suspected liver failure. So she suspects much more may have been wrong. They are also going to send tissue samples off and not charge me any more in the name of research. I am just heartbroken and can't seem to stop crying for all the suffering she went through.
The breeder said she would refund our money, little consolation in the light of all she went through. I am in touch with Elliot's mom and will stay that way until he gets through this.
Your kind thoughts and well wishes have been so helpful during this past week. I feel so fortunate to have found this sight.
I know time heals but it hurts like hell right now.
I'm so sorry for your loss.

My heart is just breaking for you.
:ghug:

Please keep writing, I hope this forum can give you support and help you get through this time
My heart is breaking for you and abby, I hope someone shuts this breeder down.

Bless Abby and hugs for you and your family at this sad and tragic time, a dreadful thing to happen to you all.

I pray all the other babies are going to be OK from this litter and the others she has had recently.

Rest in peace sweet baby.

God please help dear elliott get through this now and survive. :(
Dolly - I'm so sorry about your Abby. I have to dry the tears to write this.
I certainly hope something can be done for Elliott, and the now 3 litters of pups. This is horrible  .
I'm so sorry about poor Abby. I really hope that something positive comes from a visit from the authorities. Was she still denying Parvo even after the vet confirmed it in Elliott?

I hope Elliott comes through with flying colors. Our thoughts are with you guys.
I'm so sorry to hear about Abby :(
How very sorry I am.

I honestly don't know what to say as words of comfort. I know how we all felt when Ursa passed away. You feel heartbroken, angry, sick and a whole lot of other emotions at the same time. It's a lot to deal with.

Your little pooch will remain in your heart always... but remember that you were able to give her a fighting chance and you did all you could.

I'm really sorry for you guys.. just don't give up!
Dolly, I'm so sorry for your loss!

Suzettemarie, my thoughts are with you for Elliott.

:ghug: to you both.
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your beautiful puppy Abby. My heart goes out to you at this difficult time.

Tears,
Elliott our thoughts and prayers are with you! Please keep fighting little sheepie man.

Hope.
I am so very very sorry to hear about Abby. Our family will be thinking of yours at this time.
Oh, I am sooo sorry to hear this news. My eyes are all tearing as I write this...No words can make you feel better I'm sure but just know my thoughts are with you...

There really should be laws that mandate state licenses for people who breed...anyone know how to start working towards legislation for that? I am going to start looking into this...

What a shame
I am so sorry for your loss. :(
I am so sorry about sweet little Abby. Even though you had her for a short time, she left a huge imprint on your hearts.
Dolly i'm so sad to hear about ABBY.
I hope you can shut this breeder down.

:ghug:

wendy and gismo
We are just stunned and so sad for the loss of Abby. My heart is just breaking and I didn't know I could cry so many tears. SDolly, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your sweet baby's soul. We will continue to fight the good fight... for Abby and all the other puppies. We are here for you.
Dolly, I am so sorry for the loss of your puppy Abby.

Suzette, we are praying for a swift recovery of dear Elliot. :ghug:
Dolly, I am so sorry to hear Abby has died. It just breaks my heart. Sweet little puppy didn't ask to be born in such conditions.

I am encouraged to hear that Elliott may be able to pull through this, and that you two are keeping in contact.

Dolly, I can't even begin to imagine how difficult this must be for you, but know that we're all here for you.

Hugs to you, and sheepie kisses from Barkley. :hearts:
Dolly Im so sorry to hear about Abby, It breaks my heart too..

Sending you ((hugs)) & sheepies kisses
:hearts:
Dolly, I am so sorry to hear of Abby's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. :ghug:

Suzette, my thoughts and prayers are also with you and Elliott for his complete recovery. :ghug:

This woman is a menace to society. She needs to be stopped NOW. I hope the authorities visit her soon. Please keep us informed as you know more, Suzette.
My heart is breaking. I'm so sorry.
:ghug:
Dolly I am so sorry you have lost little Abby. You were her best chance in this sad situation and she was lucky she had you fighting for her survival. Take care.
Dolly, I'm so sorry! Poor Abby.
Poor baby! I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. No matter how short a time they are with us they always leave a huge hole in our hearts.

Please let us know what we can do to help you now or in the future.
Words cannot express how sorry I am. The whole situation is a very very sad one. I don't know how someone can bring such beautiful animals into this world and not care enough to take proper care of them. Its disheartening to say the least.
I am sooooooo sorry. I just dont even know what to say....
Just a difficult time, my thoughts are with you Dolly.
I have contacts at USDA HQ investigative division. If any of the Arizona folks want to PM and give me some info on this person, I'll pass it on.
hi

i posted a special post for abby on crossing the rainbowbridge

wendy and gismo
So sorry to hear about little Abby - you are in our thoughts and prayers

Candace & Avala
I am so very sorry to hear about Abbey. What an awful thing to go through. Poor little pup, poor you :(

Seems like we have been hearing about an awful lot of sick pups lately.
Hi,

My heart goes out to you and little Abby. I'm so sorry this happened to you.

Marianne
Dolly I am so so very sorry to hear about your little Abbey. They come into our lives for such a short time and they're in our hearts forever. My prayers are with you in this sad time.

Does anyone know how Elliott is doing??
I am so sorry to hear about your puppy and what Elliot is going through as well. This person definitely should be shut down. Poor puppies. I hope that the other people who have recently bought puppies from her also find out asap as Parvo is so highly contagious and can be fatal. So sad. Every story I hear like this makes me hate PuppyFind.com even more!
I have not heard about Elliot yet today but I know what his family is going through. I think of him all day every day. The worst part is the emptiness and knowing we cannot bring a new puppy home for at least 2 months. We want to eradicate all traces of this ugly disease and never have to see another sheepie suffer. Any tips or advice from someone who has had to clean up after parvo?
Bleach, bleach and more bleach. I think it's 10-1 Water to Bleach. Anything that can't be bleached you will want to throw away. Anything pourous will probably have to be thrown away as well. When in doubt, toss it out!

HAve your carpets and furniture cleaned as well. I can't quite remember what you have to do with other fabrics. The guy who runs the drug dog kennel had a sick dog wander into his facility and it was hell just to protect his already vaccinated dogs. I'll ask around again just as soon as I can.

So, in other words, just move, huh?
SDolly: I am so so sorry that both you and your little puppy had to go through this; it is really unfortunate that there are people with such low morals running around this planet. How does this less-than-a breeder live with herself? Anyone that would treat helpless animals so poorly is the worst kind of a person. My heart is broken for you. I know you probably miss Abby terribly but, I am certain there is another healthy puppy out there just waiting to be loved by you.
I am sorry about your Abby, no pup deserves this. I hope you will take your anger and frustration and turn it into a positive way to stop this breeder. You have help here in the forum, just ask....
WOW, I did not know Parvo was so tough to get rid of.

What does she do about upholstered funiture like couches etc?? And rugs that cannot be beleached? WOW......
I'm so sorry this has happened. I apologize for not reading through this thread until now. Our hearts go out to you.
I am very sorry to hear about Abby. Just know you did all you could to help.
I am very sorry for all of the families involved. Abby was a special puppy and hopefully she will be able to make a big impact on the rest of her relatives lives. If parvo was in these puppies before they left home (which it had to be) then I'm sure the others are also at a huge risk. Yuck.
My heart goes out to all of those impacted by this horiffic loss.

For those of us not in the Southwest, or who do not have a legend for the "code," can someone please tell us who the breeder is?

Thank you.
UPDATE ON ELLIOTT:

Elliott continues to improve, thank God. He is still in the hospital in intensive care… he’s had several plasma transfusions that have helped. His white blood count skyrocketed (finally) which means his little immune system has final kicked in and is fighting the virus. He is starting to act like a puppy … chewed through his IV tube, which really upset the Vet Tech but the rest of us (including the Vet) were cheering. He’s making a lot of racket… so much so that they have to turn the baby monitor down so they can hear themselves think. He finally ate something last night (first real food in 7 days!) and, most importantly, did not vomit it up. He still has the bloody diarrhea, but they don’t seem to be as concerned about that as opposed to the vomiting. His proteins are holding steady as is his blood glucose. These are all good signs. He is being transferred from Emergency Services to Internal Medicine today and we’re hopeful that he can come home in the next few days. They told us at the onset that it most likely would be 10 days, and they were right. They are stopping short of saying that he’s “out of the woods” but both Roger and I just know that he’s going to make it.

Your continued concern and support has been a great source of comfort.

THANK YOU ALL! :ghug:
HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :ghug:

I hope before long you have him home where he belongs and you can look back on this time as a terrible nightmare!!
