blood & diarrhea

Okay, I need a little reassurance here.

Last night we got home late from watching the superbowl. Jon took out the girls, mentioned that Callie had a little bit of diarrhea, and then we went to bed. Then a couple hours later, Callie wanted to go out again (that is quite unusual). This morning when I took her out before I left for work, she was straining to poop, and only a few drops of brown liquid came out (sorry, I know that is gross ... but I've read much worse on here 8O ). Then she had some bright red blood on the hair around her bum.

The blood scared me, so we went to the vet and she examined Callie and gave her some kind of herbal medicine (so now Callie smells like oregano!) and also some diarrhea medicine for the next couple days. We have to take back a stool sample, but the vet didn't seem too concerned.

I was searching on the forum here, and it looks like bright red blood is probably not too serious - like she is just straining too hard or something (that is what the vet said too)? Has anyone had this problem?
I don't know what could have caused this - we did let her run around in the backyard unsupervised for a little while yesterday... so I guess she could have eaten something, but I don't know what it could have been.

Okay, as I type this, I realize that I am probably worrying over nothing. But you know how it is when your baby is sick - especially when there is blood!! :?

Yes, generally fresh (bright red) blood in the stool is "ok", can be a sign of straining or irritation. Black/tarry stool is worrisome as is vomiting.

That's my understanding.
Okay, so it has been 48 hours since the initial episode and Callie is still having problems. She has only had one bite of food since breakfast on Monday, and that caused more diarrhea and blood. She has also vomited twice.
I dropped her off at the vet this morning and they are doing x-rays and blood tests. I am afraid that she ate something that is obstructing / cutting her inside.
Hopefully they will call soon with good news. In the meantime, please send up a prayer for my baby Callie.
:hearts: Best wishes to Callie that nothing serious is going on.
I hope she's okay and feeling better soon.
Cristin, Harry and I are sending hugs and prayers Callies way.

:ghug:
Oh, how scary! Big hugs for Callie's recovery! :ghug:
Thanks for the well wishes. I picked Callie up at lunch and took her home. The vet did blood work and examined her again, but she can't find anything wrong with her. They were going to take an x-ray, but the machine broke this morning. We are waiting on a couple of tests that they had to send out for... but other than that, all is well.
Except that my dog is sick. :?
I just feel bad for her. The vet said at least another 36 hours with no food to see if she can clear out her system. She acts like she feels fine, maybe a little less energetic than usual, but not much. And I know she is hungry. :(
Callie's Mom ,I had something very similar happen to Harley.
I was going nuts and the vet could not find out what was wrong .
The vet kept Harley there and did a Flush ( Enema) to try and clean him out .
Well that didn't work .That night he drank a small bowl of water and threw it all up within a few minutes.
To my surprise two tiny leafs where all slimed up in the water- vomit.
I picked them up (YES, with a paper towel) and looked at them and let out a yell !
I had just planted a few plants out front of my house a few days ago.
My daughter went to take Harley out to go Pee Pee out front on the leash ( Oh did I forget to say my daughter was on the cell phone at the time and not watching what Harley was doing?)
We now know He was eating the new plants !

I jumped on the computer and found out they were poisonous to dogs.
I called the vet right away but he said it has been 2 days now and would already be in his blood stream.
The only thing I could do would be to try and get him to drink and vomit the rest of them up (if any) and try and flush himself out.

I was a basket case ! I just sat there with him and let him drink A small bit and vomit .It seamed like hours.
Well, there were more leafs that came out.
Within a few more hours he was holding down the water ,then food and no more blood in his poop the next day. :phew:

I now keep activated charcoal in the house just in case a poisoning happens again. God forbid!

Oh and the plants, I ripped them out and tripled bagged them before I threw them out.
I now first check on line before I plant ANYTHING.

I hope Callie gets better soon............ :plead:

PS. I also live in Tennessee and this is a very common plant /hedge grown here. Maybe you have it in your yard? I will look for the name of it and post it when I find it. Just in case..........

Thank you for sharing, Antoinette, that very well could be the case... I hadn't even considered the possibility of poisonous plants... and those plants look familiar. We have some hedges in front of our house that were there when we moved in, so I'm not really sure what they are. But they look a lot like that link you sent (only not the golden kind). I thought Callie had eaten a few of those leaves before - sometimes there are leaves on the front porch that she gets to before I do... but my husband said that it's possible she could have gotten into a larger quantity of them where he threw the clippings out back. Anyway, when I get home, I will examine the hedges and see if that's what they are...
The first time Callie vomited, there were a few pieces of leaves in there - mostly the stems and the 'stick' part down the center of the leaf, the green parts were gone already. I just assumed they were tree leaves that had fallen in the yard.

..now I'm off to research what to do when it's too late to make them vomit
Callie's Mom please keep me posted .

There are all kinds of this hedge/plant in all colors and they are all poisonous. I would just run it by your vet and see what he thinks.

I am sure she will be fine. It is just nice to know if that was the problem.

Good luck..............

Calie's Mom,
If the problem is still continuing and she is not eating and having such difficulty going, find a vet who will do an x ray right away. She could ahve eaten a rock or something that is obstructing her and if that's the case, time is of the essense..not to scare you but better safe than sorry..

Keep us posted and good luck.
Good news this morning! Callie has gone 24 hours now with no diarrhea! yay! and 48 hours with no vomiting!
She got two spoonfuls (spaced an hour apart) of science diet i/d food last night, and one more this morning... so far so good!
We are still unsure of the cause, but it seems likely that it is something she ate - maybe that bush (which we are currently figuring out how to get rid of!)

On a side note, I am really pleased with our vet. I complain a lot b/c it seems like they are more expensive than our previous vets, and they do charge for every little detail... But the doctor that we saw on Monday and Wednesday doesn't work on Thursday and Friday, so she has called me from home both days to check on Callie. :) Today, I missed her call, so she left me a message with her cell phone number to call her back. I thought that was very nice - and the way a doctor should be. It certainly makes me feel better that she is actually concerned about my baby, and not just trying to run up the bill and get her out the door...
I am so happy to hear that Callie is feeling better.

Earlier this week, my Fred was extremly sick with diarrhea. His upset stomach came out of nowhere Tuesday night. He was not acting like himself and he was visibly uncomfortable. My husband and I were up with him periodically throughout the night. The poops came to an end before we made it to the vet. I fed him some rice cereal for breakfast instead of his food to bind him a bit.

I also deduce Fred got a bite of something on our walk before I could pull him away.

There are so many bushes/shrubs/plants that are poisonous to dogs. Across from my house there are several holly bushes and I am constantly dragging Mr. F away from them.
