YOU ALL SAVED MY EARNIE! THANK YOU!!!!!

Thank you for all your help, thoughts and prayers. Earnie came out of surgery last night @ about 10:30pm. His stomach was twisted past 180 degrees and his spleen did not look good when the doctor got in and going. She said it took her a little longer than she expected but she got him decompressed and soon all his organs started to turn a nice "pink" color again. Right now he is resting on morphine an tranquilizers. He is a very anxious sheepie being deaf and all so they are trying to keep him calm. I just got off the phone with them and they are about to try to give him water and food. They say he is a good patient! I can't see him because they are afraid this will excite him so I am waiting.... I know this isn't a chat room but to all who answered so quickly I can't thank you enough. YOU SAVED MY SHEEPIE. I have another sheepie he is one year old and you can bet I'll know what to watch for in the future. The good thing is that they will tac his stomach to the abdomen wall since his liagaments are stretched and this will prevent it from occuring again. I'm so glad I was home or I would have come home to a horrible situation. I can't imagine. I have two little boys who still have both their sheepies. Thank you all.

Im SO happy to hear that Earnie is ok!!! :phew:
Please keep writing in and letting us know how his recovery progresses!
Yay!!! :clappurple: :cheer: :yay:

I'm SO glad he made it! :)
I've been checking in throughout the day and I can't tell you how relieved I am that your sheepie-boy came through the surgery :D Bloat is such an emergency situation. I have a friend that lost one of his sheepies to bloat after the surgery. It must be difficult for you to be away from him but just follow the vet's advice... it sounds like you've got a good one.

Please keep us posted on how he's doing.

I am so relieved to hear the good news about Earnie!
I hope he is feeling better soon.
Whew, glad he's going to be okay. Bloat is fairly common in big breeds and many dogs die from it. There are not many known causes for it. Just wondering if you did anything differently with Earnie last night before he got it? Like lots of vigorous play, did he eat his dinner faster than usual, etc. Also wondering if you feed him more than once a day.
:clappurple: Fantastic News, I am so glad he made it through the surgery and the damage was repairable. :D

Look forward to Earnie being able to come home to you all soon. :D

On the downside a bit, earnie will have to be monitored the rest of his life to stop it re-occuring again. Water intake has to be monitored, you said he drinks bowl full at a time. Feeding him will have to be monitored too, a few small meals a day rather then 1 big meal and never feed or water him after exercise or when he has been running around, wait till they cool down and are more relaxed. After a meal, relax time for an hour or so. Otherwise he should be fine.

I am sure your vet will fill you in on that when you get to take him home.

Give earnie a big hug from us when you can. :D
Oh, I am SOOOO glad to hear about Ernie! If I knew how to do all the jumping happy faces, I would have tons of them on this post!!! I kept checking in all day to hear the word and am so happy to hear he is doing okay!!!

It is hard to be away but the Vet is right. I had my first OES in for surgery and seeing me just made him too excited....They may ask you to keep him crated or confined to an area when he comes home...a quiet spot where he can recover away from noise and lots of activity that may get him excited. I suspect he may be in the hospital a few days...

I am so scared of bloat myself...never had a dog that had it and always fed my adult dogs twice a day as opposed to one big meal once a day. I will continue that with new pup as well.

Kisses and hugs to both of you...well to all of you. Your hubby and children are probably stressed out too! Here's to Ernie's full recovery!!!
Great news! :ghug:
I'm so glad he's ok!!!!!

Lori have a read of this link, it has all the information on bloat and ways of preventing it.

Daisie posted this link on her post "Symptons of Bloat" it is a wonderful link to have on your favourites. In fact anyone that owns a deep chested breed should store this link for future reference.

Bloat is a life threatening thing, if caught early and symptons are picked up early enough, it saves your dogs life. :D

So I hope people will spend time and read the link daisie posted. Time is of the essence when it comes to dogs bloating.
I printed up the symptoms earlier today and posted them on the refrigerator so my husband would know too. They're right next to the doggie CPR info. I'm so scared of bloat.

I am too! and of course I have large dogs GSD's and Labs are on the list. I did not see OES but we all know they can bloat....I am very careful about activitiy before and after eating and water consumption. I did not know about food content. I am going to read the ingredients on my dog's food.
We try to watch the activity before/after meals too. We've always made them wait about half an hour before they can play but maybe we should wait longer.

The OES is listed further down on the list at this address-

There was a study done last year by Purdue University about the fat content in food and the relationship to bloat. Here are the articles...
