Doggie Emergency-Vaccine Reaction!

I wasn't going to post this but then I read about Ernie and bloat and having surgery...I also was at the emergency tonight. My 12 week old pup had his vaccines earlier today and apparently had a reaction..not an allergic reaction ( yet ) but a reaction...very sleepy, weak in legs, not eating...

Doc checked him out and no temp, no diarrea, no swelling, no hives..He ate when we got home but is still excessively sleepy so I am up watching him closely...shot was goive at noon...it is now almost 11pm at night here...wouldn't I have seen an allergic reaction by now? Hives, reddness, vomiting?

Moral of my story...it is imperative everyone know the number and location of their nearest emergency/after hours animal hospital. I now have the magnet on my refrig and number in my phone book...One never knows when you'll need them. And keep the number and location in a place where its easily found...One tends to panic in an emergency and not think clearly...

My prayers are with Ernie tonight too...I'll probably be up most of the night myself...

Ashley -- I am so sorry to read your pup is not doing well. I will be thinking good thoughts for you and hoping for a positive update. Please let us know when he is out of the woods. ..
Very good advice. Our vet is part of a practice with offices in 2 other surrounding small towns, and is a large animal practice too - we are in farm country!

They all take turns being on call, and the answering service has the vet call you. I actually have used it after hours for our sheep more than the dogs, but it is great to have. They will come to your house, or you can bring the animal in to one of the offices. They are wonderful!

One more thing to do - put the phone number(s) in your cell phone too. Mine is under "vet" for moments in a panic and you can't think of names!

I do that too! I put mine under 24hr Vet -- so it is right at the top!
My Vet is part of a network and the emergency visit that usually cost $95 just to get in the door, cost nothing because it was a reaction to vaccine. You know what, at that point, I didn't care what it cost! And my husband is away on business. Good thing my Dad lives with us. he came along and held Bowie in his arms while I drove...

So far no further reaction other than drinking alot of water and peeing alot too! Sleeping on and off...I don't want to put him in his crate tonight away from the water because they said he may drink alot...looks like I'll be lsleeping in the kitchen...
Our vet is speed dial #5 on my cell phone. We are lucky as we have the Louisiana State University Vet Emergency Clinic open 24 hrs less than 10 minutes away.

Ashley - hope everything goes ok with your pup.
Happy to Say, Bowie seems normal this morning...biting my pants leg, jumping to play, eating his food in 10 seconds or less...

We slept on the kitchen floor, me included, until about 2 am then moved into the crate and he slept straight until 6 am and seemed okay...

Please everyone, keep those emergency numbers handy...

Now, how is Ernie? Anyone hear?

Both of you in the crate? Must be a big crate!! 8O

Glad to hear that everyone at your house is feeling better!!!
We have an emergency vet center about 15 min away.I have the number in my cell as well as posted in the house. The problem is that there are some not so desirable vets on at times so it is hit or miss. They also do not let you go in at first with your pets. I ,for one, hate that!!! My mobile vet always calls back asap and if she is on the line or with a patient and it is urgent you can page her. We are in the boonies so I am very grateful for that. Hope your baby continues to feel better. Sometimes puppies do get lethargic after immunizations. But it is worriesome.
Sorry to hear Bowie wasn't feeling well.

What vaccination did he have?
I didn't realize I never mentioned what vaccination :? It was that Lepto vaccine and rabies...I am assume the reaction was to the Lepto since I ahven't heard much about reaction to rabies...or am I wrong?

Bowie doing well today...back to nipping at my pants and chasing leavves in the yard...eating well too...

And, by the way, Bowie slept in the crate and I was along side!!LOL...that's after we both slept on the kitchen floor for a while!!!

Thanks everyone...great to ahve a place to release the stress...anyone heard about Ernie yet???
