Hosting a kids Craft party

Hubby is taking a week off work, so this is perfect for me to give Madelyn a girls party. Rob will take Parker and a friend and go play for the time. Parker is too much work to be included with the girls...someone always gets hurt feelings...or ignored.

ANYWAYS:

Need craft help. I want to buy each girl (10) a clay flower pot...then some acrylic paints and let them paint their own design. But I am not sure if I should first put a coat of paint all over it first like white...I can do that ahead of time, and spray the inside with clear coat.

I am afraid that when they paint their design, we let it dry, and then I clear coat the outside...will it be completed and dry within 3 hours. So they can take it home...filled with candy.

Other things they can make...

Beaded name tag's with Pony Beads for their backpacks.

Clothespin Magnet for notes on fridge. Use foam, pompoms, googly eyes...etc to make character.

Popsicle base for a pkg of sticky notes, also with a magnet for notes at home.

Homeade bath salts in a jar...different colors.

Foam something?? With Glitter??

Froot Loop Necklaces.

Paint on small canvas's.

Does any of these jump out as more fun. I'd like to have one major craft...something like the pot (candy dish, pencil holder). Then a couple easy, crafts to make while they wait for the pot to dry.

I will have to all the hot gluing...but other than that, I want to be hands off. I want the projects to be ready for them to finish. So I might do googly eyes on pompoms ahead of time.

I will assume 10 girls will come. The school is having a PD day (no school), so we want to take advantage of that, and have them early in afternoon. From 1-4 pm....with snacks, drinks etc. And free play time is always an option.

Hi,

Wow sounds like so much fun! Wish I lived closer as I'd beg to be invited too!

One really sweet idea I've seen is pencils and pens made to look like giant daisy's using pipecleaners wrapped around the pen/pencil and then the daisy made out of the same material attached. This may be something you'd want to place in the flowerpot too. The daisy can be made with pipecleaners or felt..or you could do a series of different flowers and let them get creative. The flowerpot becomes a pencil/pen holder and the flowers of course are the writing utensils.

If you still want to protect the exterior of the flower pot you can get spray shellac..much faster than painting it. Or if you allow the girls to use model paints no need for the varnish. However you'd have to be super careful that the girls dont' get this over their clothes or elsewhere as it's permanent. Water based paints are safer but would need the shellac for longitivity.

The sharp point (writing tip) is down and so the item is useable. Hope that made sense.

I know girls love glitter stuff. Loonie stores have tons of really neat little mini accessories that you can glue on to craft items. You may want to scout those shops out too to get ideas.
We have some really great dollar stores around here. That place has so many things.

Question tho...Is dollar store acrylic paints okay to use?

I still have some clear varnish that I used on our wood table...can I use that?

There should be approx 10 girls coming...she can't narrow it down...LOL The girls are second grade, and 7-8 yrs old.
The neatest thing one of my boys ever did in school was a coffee mug with "I love Mom" written on it with flowers and designs....all in nail polish. No time to dry, and it lasts forever...Might be an alternative to paint...

why is it that nail polish will last forever on a coffee mug that gets rinsed out constantly but wont stay on your toes??????
I like that idea. Does it stay on even if it put in the dishwasher? The kids could design a cup for mom/dad's work.
Here are a couple of pictures of my mug. It is about 10 years old, and has been through the dishwasher many, many times.

You can see the color on handle is wearing down, but it is still one of my favovorite mugs.

It is nail polish on ceramic, though, so I'm not sure what it sticks best to.

How fun! You must have liked the flower pot idea the best as it was your first thought. This is kind of the same idea but would save you from a TON of work and the kids can go home with their stuff. They sell mini tin pails in various colors at craft stores. You can purchase those quick dry markers and they can decorate each of their pails. Fill it up with goodies and off they go...
Nicole..that is soo cute. I told Madelyn about the idea and she really liked it. I do have some old nail polish too. Do I buy a glazed cup, or rough stoneware cup's? Your's look glazed, but that might be the flash.??

But when we walked through the dollar store, she had her own thoughts. We came across the small canvases...and she liked the idea of painting a picture like a real artist. So for $20 I can buy each of them a canvas, and a stand to display it...or just the canvas..LOL.

I am still gonna have other stuff to make, like the backpack name tags.

I have a couple pkgs of popsicle sticks. And clothespins...to make magnet note holders. Foam stickers are pretty cheap...maybe.

I will go to Michaels too, and see what ideas they have....something fun for a group of girls.

I saw an idea to take a paint stick, glue 3 clothespin across, write "My Art Work" on it and hot glue some magnet's to the back. Let the kids embellish from there. It can hold 3 pictures. Here they can use glue and glitter....sparkley pompoms creatures.

I see the tin cans/buckets, but didn't know what would stick to them...which paint can I use for those....or just markers?? Would foamy stickers last on them?

The dollar store also had some cute little bird houses, they could paint. Might look cute on the front door step in a planter. I could get some dowels so they can be staked.

It was a plain, white coffee mug that they used. Already glazed etc. You can always have one of your kids do one ahead of time....for thier dad...

Sounds like it will be a great party!
I hope so, this will be the first time we've invited friends from school as a group.

I'm thinking of calling it an ARTrageous Party !

Making sure they wear old clothes or bring a smock. For treats, they can either create their own cupcakes or build their own sundaes.

I figure Feb is kinda a blah month, still in winter and spring feels far away...it's just nice to do something....esp when you are stuck inside.
Hi Daisie
I used to share studio space with a number of prof. artists, some of whom taught, and hosted art-themed parties for kids. Your party sounds like its going to be a lot of fun! I do have a few suggestions, and cautions for you though...make sure all materials are non-toxic (the varnish you mentioned probably is not), tarp EVERY inch of the work area (most especialy the floor!) and if you are going to have food, leave it till the artwork is done. (2 reasons...theyll be less hyped on suger  , and even the most non-toxic materials probably should not get MIXED with food) I'll share some horror-stories with you AFTER your sucsessful party! Remember to take pictures!!!
Oh come on AFTER...LOL

I was gonna keep the kitchen as the craft area. But in between crafts let the kids go play, snack away in th eliving room off the coffee table. So I can set one project aside for drying...and prep for another.

Found two more ideas:

Tye dye sock puppets:

White sock, rubber bands, black dye...make a zebra. I'd have to hot glue some of this after wards...white felt ears, googley eyes, and fake hair.

Orange sock, rubber bands, black dye...make a tiger. Black felt ears, googley eyes.

I am doing a test on the mug and nail polish...I found a website doing that craft, and they suggested baking in the oven after the paint dries. It was super fast tho...a few stripes and poka dots. Keep it simple.

I trust that these girls won't injest or fool around...they will be watched at all times...to keep their attention focused...as I do not want my kitchen ruined.
