Hot Dogs - no pun intended

Does anyone use hot dogs ( frankfurters!) as special treats? Now, dumb question...are they cooked? Also, how about small pieces of bologna?
Trying to find that special treat to give my baby after a grooming session and school...

We used hot dogs for treats for awhile! We got the idea from our vet's office. They have a jar of hot dog "buttons" in every room, and had instructions on how to make.

Using thawed hotdogs, you slice them into 1" or so slices and microwave on paper towel for a couple minutes until they go all bubbly. You can tell they're done if they become crunchy when they cool. It took a few tries for us to figure out how long they needed to be zapped, but basically just nuke the heck out of them.

Then they're crunchy dried buttons that can be stored in an airtight container (not in fridge) for a few weeks.

We bought all-beef ones (no filler) and he seemed to really enjoy them!

I'm not sure if they're already cooked when you buy the package though.... can't answer that one.

Barkley's favourite treat however is Summer Sausage! We buy a big log of it from our local Farmer's Market and cut that into small pieces for training treats. He loves it!
I prefer healthier treats unless they're being used for agility or something where the dog is doing something high intensity. I've read many times that hot dogs are frown upon as regular treats due to the fat.
Good point, yes!

We actually stopped using hotdogs for training treats because Barkley brought them back up.

We use the summer sausage and little bits of cheese at training class, and the rest of the time we give Mother Hubbard Couch Potato Biscuits (low-fat/low-cal) or Senior Lite MilkBones.... again, 'cause they're low-cal.

Kibble works as a training treat! It's all in the presentation...
Yes, hot dogs are cooked. We used to eat them straight from the package as kids 8O
When I was a kid we would give our dog hog-dogs if we ran out of dog food. She loved them, and no we didn't cook them, but did break them up so they weren't swallowed whole.
I prefer the turkey franks. Fewer pig parts. I don't give pork to the dogs.
We use the chicken hot dogs here for training treats
We use the all chicken ones, too, and nuke them. Bingley LOVES them!
For a quick treat, they are fine. Too much fat and salt to be real healthy.

When we brought our Newfoundland down from Denver we were given a package of hotdogs and a bottle of tranquilizers. Before we were home, the dog had eaten all the hotdogs, consumed a triple dose of tranks and was still bouncing off the ceiling. We seriously considered finishing the tranquilizers ourselves.

Once home and settled in, he was the most mellow, loveable boy.....not at all the wildman we originally met. And he still loved hotdogs.

I'm amazed at how many dog foods are incorporating pork now. It's hypo allergenic because most dogs have never eaten it but apparently it is a more digestible protien source as well.

BTW, I LOVE your new avatar! That is so cool! :)

Over the years, I'd read that pork wasn't good for dogs. I admit that I haven't looked into it for a long time, I just avoided the pork. Is new research reporting that pork is cool now? I'm too lazy to internet search myself right now so if you already know... ;)
Hot dogs are very high in Fat and Sodium. For training treats I get the liver flavored training treats, they are already "dried" and come in small pieces. My guys don't care how big a treat is, they get just as excited over the tiny pieces as the big. Another favorite is "PupCorn: als low in fat (but not much nutrition).
We do the same thing as Steph, hot dog prep wise, except we use low fat turkey dogs. We also only used them during agility class. Different class, different treat just to help show the difference in what we were doing at that time.
