Old English Sheepdogs and other dogs

Hey Everyone
Our family was thinking of getting a Old English Sheepdog, but we have beagle right now that is 4 yrs and has a good temperament. The beagle has a epilepsy but we have it pretty much under control. I was just wondering if anyone else has another dog besides a OES, and if when they got a Old English Sheepdog was there any problems between the two? If you could let me know

Thanks
Brett

Wow! There are so many variables. I've had more dominant sheepies that not. They do not mix well into packs that already have a strong dominant dog. My best luck was adding the sheepie as a young puppy, not an adult.

Another concern is when your beagle is having an attack, packs have been known to attack the victim. I know of one sheepie household that had an epileptic sheepie and when he was having an attack, one of the other dogs would attack him. This is natural pack mentality.

On the other hand, a companion may be just the ticket for helping your beagle. Realize a sheepie will be much larger, stronger.......and pushy. You will have to be the pack master.....head bitch.......Alpha.....what ever you want to call yourself. This helps keep a pack in order.

If you beagle is pretty laid back, doesn't attack all strange dogs or bark at them, then there's a good chance you can be a sheepie family.
Brett,

There are many OES families that have other breeds as well! It will depend on the dog's temperment - as to how things will go! Learn as much about the breed as possible before you decide - they are wonderful - but they are very different than a beagle (alot more work in most cases!).

The most important thing I can't stress enough - please, please, please - only get a puppy from a reputable breeder that breeds with consideration of both health and temperment (not money!). The temperment of a dog depends so much on how they are bred and raised!

Please find a breeder that adheres to strict ethical guidelines. Meet the breeders, the dogs and if possible anyone that has already bought a dog from that breeder. You could attend a dog show in your area and talk to the breeders there. A responsible breeder will ask you alot of questions - that's good - you want to be sure they care enough to want their puppies to go to the right homes and make sure they'll be well cared for and that the potential owners know what they are getting themselves into. Reputable and responsible breeders don't have multiple litters available (or a litter available every month or so). So, it may take a little more time to find the right puppy - but it will be well worth the wait!!!!

I would encourage you to read the following article - to help you understand OES and discusses responsible breeding practices.

You should also check out the AKC Breeder Referral contact for OES...

Even with a referral though - please be sure to do your own research on a breeder.

A good breeder could mean all the difference in a healthy, happy and friendly pup!

Best of Luck!
Kristen
