Reno's Ongoing Urinary Tract Infection

Hi All,

I have had 5-month old westie girl [her name is Reno] since she was 3 1/2 month. She's got the UTI and it has been 4 weeks now. At the first vet visit, a vet said she was not very serious saying she has been "a little bit" infected and gave me antibiotics for 10 days. After 10 days, I had another urinary sample of Reno tested but the result said she's still got it. So I had 2 more weeks to give her antibiotics (the same kind as the first time).

But the day before yesterday and yesterday [it was the 8th day to take her 2nd treatment], she pooed 8 times a day and peed 2 times inside [after taking the first treatment, she was "almost" house trained]!! I went to the vet again and they said that antibiotic seemed to cause her loose stool. Then they gave me a different kind of antibiotic.

Today is her 2nd day of 3rd treatment and she peeped 10 times as total [12pm-7:30pm] and of those, 4 times inside!!!

I called the vet but they said "just wait until the 3rd treatment is done and then call again." But I am so worried because Reno seems to go backward and worse...

Anyone can help this miserable me and Reno?? Is it normal this worse situation happens during the treatment?? I really don't know what I am supposed to do... Please HELP!!!

I am not a vet so this is simply what I would consider (IF this hasn't already been done)...
Has your Westie's urine been cultured? If not, you might ask your vet to send a fresh urine sample off to a lab to be cultured so you can determine the bacteria that is causing the infection. I'm not sure this is always true but without knowing exactly what you're treating, I wonder if you can be certain the antibiotic is appropriate.

I have a sheepie that had struvite crystals and recurrent UTI's. We requested a culture and they discovered she had a difficult bacteria treat. She finished the month and a half treatment for the bacteria causing the problem and is now on a maintainance dose of a different antibiotic for the next 6 months. We also tested half way through the initial treatment to be certain the antibiotic was effective. The internist at the lab suggested this approach along with vitamin C. She's been doing well so far but we will have her tested again soon just to be sure.

My neighbor's boxer seemed to have an UTI for a long time, like a couple of months. I think they tried a couple different types of medicines.
Thanks for you two!

I had have 2 urinary samples tested but I don't know they were cultured... She is, still, peeing (6 times from 7:30pm to 11pm). Even though I understand the use of the different medications, my concern is why she isn't get better...

I am so frastrated...
