Weird Question about Cats (nipples)

I feel ridiculous making this post, but it's been on my mind for a week now.

When I got koko... for some reason, I always felt the nipple under her armpit (about there). When I picked her up is usually when I would feel it. It looked normal though...

Well, while my mom was here, I think it fell off. Is that possible???????

I was touching it (because again.. I felt "something" and it triggered my interest), and it kept wiggling. I wiggled it a few more times, and that's when it fell off.

My mom says no way, but she couldn't tell you a chihuahua from a great dane.

There is now what looks like a deep crater/hole where "something was." No blood underneath or anything. So was it probably an object that got stuck in there?

If I drag my finger directly across her chest to her other armpit, there is a nipple there. I know animals don't have to have even nipples (the same amount), but I SWEAR there was a nipple there before. I tried to save what came off, but I guess one of the cats knocked it off the kitchen counter.

Hmm...

I don't know Jo. It could have had a cyst or something underneath it, that her body eventually just healed on it's own and expelled... maybe?

When I pickup Bell or Crash, their nipples are much farther down their tummies then that... I've never noticed Iris' under all that hair!
Koko is the one with tons of hair, and I never feel/notice any of her other nipples. Just the two under her armpit (not directly under but still.. best way to describe location). And I thought it couldn't be a nipple too for the same reason... but again, she has one still intact on the other side. 8O :?
You're sure it wasn't a tick?

It could have been like a skin tag... I've heard of people having those, so I would guess other animals can too.
We don't have ticks ( :cheer: )

I wish I could find what fell off. It's the same color as her nipple, but weird that there is no blood. The hole is still there, but doesn't seem to be hurting her or anything. Maybe it was a cyst. I don't know a lot about them.
Hi,

I was trying to visualize as to what it could be as that location for a nipple would be in the wrong place. You are probably right and it could have been a cyst or even a sore of some sort that healed at some point.

Marianne and the boys
Sounds like a skin tag.
I came across this trying to see if anyone else had the issue. This just happened to one of my cats. My cats are indoors, so i know they dont have ticks and i felt a bumb when i picked him up. Flipped him over and thought it was his nipple, but noticed it was long. Jus gave it a TINY pull and it came right off. Amased at what just happened, i checked his others.... Well one other had the same thing. Not sure what it is, but he was cool w/ me playing w/ it~?!~
update: Hole is still there on my cat. ...just not as deep. Still looks like her nipple fell off.

dang cat still doesn't know how to cover her stinkin' poop either. Just craps and runs. Thought she'd learn to do it from the older cat.
Hmmm poor Ms J. (You'd think kitty would cover up their dirty deed).

Glad to hear everything is otherwise okay! Despite having a weird crater under her arm. I was still thinking it may have been a wart.

I have no idea about her nipple falling off, or whatever it was. I have never heard that or seen it.....I would have freaked!! :) I am glad to hear she is otherwise ok though :)

About the poop thing. I heard that many cats will not cover their poop up if there is a cover over the litter box. I find this to be true with my cats. They never cover it in the litter box with a hood on it but do so with the one I have without. Just a thought :)

Good Luck :)
VERY interesting!! Unfortunately that cover has to be on since the other one is a kicker ...and I see no need for 2 boxes when 1 takes enough space up considering my dog has a litter box in the same room. Not to mention, the older cat (the high kicker) would NOT allow her to have her own box. She doesn't even let her walk anywhere w/o bossing her around ...telling her how she's doing everything wrong.

Just means I have to hurry and throw away whenever she goes for the rest of her life (which sucks when there's company over but she normally just goes once a daY). Still think that would be interesting to test out!

Also since this thread was brought to the top....

one of my cats throws up EVERY MORNING she doesn't get fed before 6 a.m. Sometimes I test it because I just don't want to get out of bed, and there is always vomit somewhere in the house. She eats twice a day. She's been like this for a very long time now. Does this seem fairly normal?
How about one of those automagic litter boxes that will scoop up the solids and put them in a nice little container?

One of our cats, a girl about 8 years old throws up all the time. She is not sick or anything she just throws up. She does this probably every other day. She is not sick or anything either. Growing up we had a cat that threw up all the time too and he was not sick either. I'm not exactly sure why they do it. Our boy lived to be 18 and my girl is getting up there so I don't think it hurts them. It is normal in my life with my cats and I would say if she has done it for a long time and she is not sick, she just may be a puker :) Maybe she has hairballs? Is it food she is throwing up or hair?
One of my cats used to throw up consistantly untill i changed his diet. All 3 are now on dry food for breakfast/lunch and wet for dinner. I used to feed them whiskars, but they are doing alot better on Proplan indoor formula.
Hi Ms J,

While none of my kitties throw up one of my friends cats was constantly doing this. Her vet did advise her to change her cats diet and I think she changed it to Science Diet and that helped a little. She recently passed away at age 16 but otherwise lived to be in good health until that day.

Marianne
They're on a mixture of pro plan/iams right now but lately I've been feeding them just one brand at a time out of laziness. Maybe I will look at a different brand.

It is funny that the mornings I DO feed her on time, she never throws up. The cat is just hateful. ;)

BTW, she throws up what looks like either foam or bile (depends) and there are times it contains hair. Never food. She's short haired.

Thanks for the advice! I love learning more about cats (behavior)

Pearl can't eat cat food....there is something about the hairball thing they put in the cat food that doesn't agree with her. hence the daily vomiting....sooo I feed her the same food that the girls eat. Now just upchucks the hairballs every once in a while. If she is losing weight you might want the vet to take a look at her.
Sorry I am coming in a little late but the "nipple" that fell off. Could it have been a strawberry mark. Not sure what you guys in the US will call them.

Its a extra bit of skin that some kids have (never heard of it on aniumals but it could be possible). Over a couple of years it just dries up and falls off.

My goddaughter had one on her stomach and used to say it was her special strawberry. When it fell off she cried for days.

Just a thought!
I came looking for an answer because something similar just happened to my cat.
I felt a bump under neath him and there was what looked like almost a pimple. I gently squeezed it and a few pieces of skin came out. Jojia didn't seem to be hurt by it, just uncomfortable that I was squeezing his nipples, so I looked for his other teets. I found three more and two of them did the same thing except not as much skin came out. His last nipple looked like it was in the process of sinking into his skin but hadn't fallen off yet. So from reading this forum I believe it would be safe to presume that cats sometimes 'shed' their nipples if they don't use them.
I thought the same thing with our male cat, Butch. I've recently realized that its not that the actual nipple that falls off. If its like mine, chances are that the nipples that do this are the ones furthest up on the chest of your cat. I think that these nipples tend to be inverted and get easily clogged with waxy buildup. Over time the cat's body pushes the waxy mass out, which looks like the rest of the nipples. The nipple-ish waxy thing eventually falls off and you see what appears to be a hole, which is really just the inverted nipple. I freaked out the first time too.
I felt weird typing in the search section "shedding cat nipples." Anyhow...same thing happened the other day and was curious as to what was up with ma kitty. The waxy build up makes sense.

My other cat used to vomit everyday, until I switched to science diet "sensitive stomach." He has been much better but have found toward the end of a big bag he will start vomiting again...wondered to myself that perhaps the food may go stale so I bought smaller bags and he is much better. Every once in awhile I'll see that he purged himself but way better than everyday and he's gained some weight!

Good times.
I'm actually glad this post came to the top.

It's now an obsession to check her nipple once every six months. It gets the same waxy build up (that's a good way of describing it) ...totally shaped like the nipple that was lost ...and it IS gone... and then you can just squeeze it out like a pimple (but super thick and waxy). Doesn't seem to bother her at all b/c she never meows or stops me. Then what's left is an empty deep hole. Process repeats :)
I have a cat this happens to, it is always the one near her armpit and it always comes back. maybe it has something to do with never having kittens? it doesnt hurt her at all and theres never any blood. i dont think it's a big deal at all, just one of those things.
My cats nipple fell off too!! I didn't believe what i was seeing but his nipple def fell off no doupt about it....kinda weird.... my cat had stitches and he kept licking at this one spot near one of his nipples and one day i saw his nipple and it was red and a little swollen......it stayed red kinda like dry blood for a week or so then one day i went to look at it and his nipple was gone and there is a little whole/mark where it used to be and it is def a nipple bc it is symetrical with another nipple on the other side of his stomach in the same spot.....but his nipple is gone though.....should i be worried....i've been using peroxide so it doesnt get infected but i cant afford 100+ dollars for the vet just for them to tell me its fine.....i just payed an 800 vet bill bc he got attacked by a hawk and had to have 15 stitches.....he is only a year old.....im worried but i dont think it is a big problem i just hope it is not a sign of a bigger problem........
first of all I have to say I have had cats my entire life and never seen or heard of this. too funny

anyway, if you don't want to go to the vet, there is an online vet you can ask questions to, you pay them through PayPal if you are satisfied with their answers. I used them once when I had a cat question and was very happy and it totally saved me a trip to the vet
One reason cats throw up is because after they eat the dry food, then drink water, the dry food expands in their stomach causing them to vomit. Try adding a little water to the dry food, stir it up to wet it. Give to your cat when it is a little soft.
I have three cats, my first cat when I got him, I noticed a waxy buildup and what looked like a nipple, under or near his armpit. I squeezed it and a waxy plug type thing came out, and have been squeezing the same thing for the past three years, every few months or so. then cat number two had no such thing, recently I acquired a new cat and it has two of these nipply things under the arm and I also squeezed them, have you had/heard any new instances about this?? as its now 2013, how is your cat?
My cat's nipple fell off, she didn't mind. Totally freaked me out when I was petting her belly and the little dried up nub just came off in my hand. o.o She just continued purring as if it hadn't happened. XD Apparently this isn't too uncommon for household cats around the age of 6-9 that have been spayed/neutered. Her nipple fell out quite awhile ago and there is still a small hole. I noticed tonight there was a small bump, and almost got really worried until I saw that it was where her nipple used to be. There was a bit of a strange white mush built up in there. : / Once ago, she purred as I examined her. This can happen with male cats as well.
Has anyone seen this nipple thing turn into something else? My cat had these and it was almost like the gunk that came out of it was so toxic that it spread some kind of infection to the inside of his arms and his chest. He's on antibiotics and steroids which make the scabs that have formed go away for the most part. He's still not acting like himself. Also, what my cat had sounds almost exactly like the others except for they looked like extra nipples(there were two or three right by one of his nipples that just pulled out. Definitely freaked me out but it was also kind of amazing looking.

So, it gets complicated. I checked one of my other cats and she has the same thing going on with her nipples. Kind of. She just has the nipples inverted and you can sorta squeeze it out? It's weird. I've put some antiseptic/antibiotic/antifungal cream on hers and they all look a lot better.

But could this be contagious? And what could the scabs(that won't heal, and are also mostly shallow and flake off) be? I'm pretty sure they occurred together. I'm taking him to the vet, a new one, because my last didn't seem to be interested in any of this, and isn't looking for the cause but just giving drugs. They come right back when the drugs wear off(about three months).

Any more information about these skin tags/nipples would be great. Or whether there were complications or indications of this having a deeper underlying problem. I can't tell if I'm working backwards or forwards trying to diagnose this.
