When your pup eats poop?!

I'm sure this thread is covered somewhere, but I can't find it.

What does it mean when your boy starts eating poop? At first it was just the poopsicles, but now it's fresh ones...his and Annie's yuck! Isn't there some kind of additive I can put in their food or something. I forget...let me know before I puke!

Oh gosh you SOOOO have my sympathy! My girl Abby has this (HORRIBLE) habit and its been VERY hard to break her of it. We used an additive called Deter, but I can't honestly say that it did a lot of good. Our vet said that the additives work well for pups, or dogs who have just started eating poop, but unfortunately Abby came to us with this habit, and had probably done it for years...The most effective way to stop it for us has been to just follow the dogs out when they go poop (ours are as predictable as clockwork, fortunately) and immediately clean up. After a while she seemed to have just forgotten about doing it, but we are STILL very vigilant....Good luck! And remember, NO KISSES!!!! 8O
:( Ewwww
Don't you just hate that stinkoooo breath 8O
Maybe this will help...Solid Gold S.E.P. (Stop Eating Poop)
The active ingredient in S.E.P. is Glutamic Acid. When Glutamic Acid is mixed with the stomach acids, the stool becomes bitter to the taste, which deters the dog from eating the stool

Beebles still sneaks a stinky snack every once in a while
Diane...bleck
We have DETER but I'm not sure how well it worked. Worked as well as sprinkling regular meat tenderizer over their food (which btw makes my dog love her food). I notice an improvement, but she will sometimes still do it (maltese). What works best for us is just picking up poop right away. Yeah, I know it's not the answer you are probably looking for. :?
One of the nice things about the "pick-up immediately" method, is, no icky springtime cleanup!! :D
Jack has this habit.............YUCK!! When his breath smells strange, it's an immediate march to the kitchen sink and wet paper towels to swap the mess. I try not to gag.

Picking up is the best bet. Meat tenderizer worked for awhile until he developed a liking for the new .......flavor, texture, ??? Deter...didn't.

ARGH!!!! My sympathies.
We got some pills at the pet store, that didn't work very well so we ended up getting different ones and giving them to both dogs at double dose for a week and then normal dose for about a month. Now Porsche will rarely eat poop anymore. I wish I could remember the name of the ones that worked, but I can't.
My Bella did this when she was a puppy. I used this stuff I got from the Vet's
called Forbid. You sprinkle it on there food. For some reason it make the poop taste bad tto them when they eat it. :o :o It was very effective. It took about a month. Thank God she doen't do it anymore. Picking up daily would be a logical alternative, but sometimes its not always possible.
Not Fozzie!! What a naughty boy. He's too cute to eat poop!

Stacy I am so sorry you are dealing with this. Yuck!
We just went through that with Wesley - I try to keep my yard picked up as much as possible but he really just seems to have stopped all on his own (knock on wood). I had heard that anise seed or licorice can work as well as mixing in marinade powder into the food. I can't say if those work but that was what Wesley's breeder suggested.

Funny that he never ate the little dogs poop - just his own, whcih in a way was ickier!

Yuck and darn hard to break the habit. Pick up straight away when either have pooped.

I read somewhere quite awhile ago a lack of Vitamin B in there diet can also cause this. Brewers Yeast was recomended, but if a dog has any sort of allergies then no to that, Brewers yeast is full of the B vitamin group and makes the poop unpleasant for a munch on.

Kelsey did it a few times when she was not well and passing undigested food, just made a point of being out there when she or the other two went and picking it up straight away so no munchies on it.

It does gross you out and sometimes if left can lead to it being habit forming as well.

So when either go, pick it up straight away and hopefully it will pass the munchies for this type of treat. 8O 8)

Awww foz, you are so darn cute how could you munch away on that? :?
My puppy does it too...But he is not out alone so I keep a plastic lunchbag type baggy with me at all times and pick up immediately...But in asking my Vet, he said its common at two points in a dog's life...one when they are puppies and two when they are pregnant..As a puppy, he said they do not always digest all their food when they're young and when the poop, it smells like food and they eat it to get the extra calories! But, he said to deter it because it can become a habit....And I thought smoking was gross...
LMAO! Thank you all for sharing poop stories. Well, Foz has gotten a teeny tiny bit better at not eat poop. It is a result of us putting him on a long leash in the backyard. Annie poops on the outskirts of the fence so he can't get to it. Someone had mentioned to feed them Fig Newtons as they weren't supposed to taste good when they were digested. Well, I don't think that worked. I'm going to try some of these other ideas as well as speak with the vet at our next visit. Thanks!
Ya know.... Matisse does his poopie, and then immediately turns around and goes to eat it......
Does any one know exactly "why" they do this. I was told it is completely normal for puppies to do, and I've seen it posted on this thread..... but what does it really mean.... (scratches head)... :lmt:

I'd rather smell puppy breath anyday..

Michelina~
I think it's just something "fun" to do! It must smell like the food they ate

We purchased a product called Forbid at the vet on Saturday. It's a powder to sprinkle on their food which is supposed to make it smell and taste icky after digested.

She said that 3 days and this should work. If not, to follow the poops and sprinkle with a tad of Tabasco sauce. I can just see my neighbors watching us season dog poop 8O :D
Stacy,

Forbid cured my Bella of eating yucky poops. But it took more than I package.
Well, the Forbid didn't work for us. We tried about 4 packages. Now we're on to Tabasco sauce.
He's back at it again!!!!!!!! This is really the only behavior that makes my blood pressure rise!

First I thought Foz was only eating frozen or snow covered poops, but he's waiting for Annie to poop and then eats her fresh poop! This poop eating started up again with the first snowfall, but then I realized we also had switched his food due to investigate allergies. We're feeding him venison & rice food, but Annie has still been eating the Nutro Senior which has the same chicken ingredients as Foz's old food. So, Annie is now switching over to the venison food as well in the hope that her poop won't be as enticing anymore.

The vet laughed on the phone when a light bulb went on over his head  ..maybe Foz is reacting to the antigens from Annie's poop 8O because his allergies haven't gotten any better yet YUCK!
Maybe it's the winter Stacy. Haggis is back rooting around for every piece of rabbit, squirrel & bird poop he can find. It seemed as though he had kicked the habit a couple of months ago... Why are dogs so gross?
